Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30 5Ltr

The Shell Helix Professional portfolio is a range of lubricants designed specifically to meet individual vehicle manufacturers’ specifications to give you reassurance you are using the right product for your vehicle.

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30 for petrol and diesel engines is approved against the technically challenging in-house Ford engine oil specifications WSS-M2C913-C and WSS-M2C913-D. In gaining approval for this specification, Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-30 was required to pass an extensive range of performance tests.

With Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF, you are using a lubricant that is specially tailored to your vehicle so it can offer better value than the multipurpose, one-size-fits-all oils on the market.

I don't know why I bother reading comments on any engine oil posts. Post 1: "Would this be ok for an Audi that takes 5w30 even if it states Ford?" Post 2: "Yes it will be fine." Thanks for that wisdom. Audi? Which Audi? Certainly not anything with a PD engine.

Apart from the occasional good bit of advice it generally goes downhill from there into variations on

1. "All modern cars are the same - any fully synthetic oil will do"
2. "I have a mate who runs a garage and they always put Woolworths' cheapest crude in and never have a problem..."
3. "The manufacturers are trying to sell you their gold-plated, super-slip SMART technology stuff and rip you off"
4. "I've worked in an oil lab for 129 years and I know that..."
5. "It's best to change your oil every five minutes or whenever you come to a T junction, whichever is the sooner"
6. (Flip-side) "I change my oil every 80,000 miles or when it's easy to cut it into chunks and lift it out"
7. "You just need 5W30 - the numbers are the only important bit"

If you're not sure about oil, stick to what you are told in your handbook or use a trusted garage. Trust only about 10% of what you read on these threads...

...apart from this post, of course.

Because they
a. eventually take it to VAG and willingly pay £150+ for service
b. don't care as they sell car
c. don't understand what oil does

Personaly I would check the A and C nos or change oil more often

No. you have a dpf and should use a low ash oil. The Vito takes 9 litres. Mercedes only charge 20 quid plus vat for 5l or 60 for 20l. worth buying 20l as it will cover you for 2 oil changes

5w30 AF:-

ACEA A5/B5; Ford WSS-M2C913-C; Jaguar Land Rover STJLR.03.5003

Do NOT put this in your Peugeot,/Citroen HDI - especially if you have a FAP/DPF equipped engine.

You require Shell AM-L or another C3 spec oil.

...manufacturer specific oil. This old chestnut again.

The numbers matter but there truly truly is no such thing as "manufacturer specific" oil.

Too many experts on here, prob the same people claiming gold-plated HDMI cables and diamond tipped razors are worth it as well.

If the numbers match the correct viscosity for your car you are fine. That's all she wrote.

And if you disagree then please publish *ANY* scientific evidence that says a BMW combustion engine required a different oil "type" from a Mercedes combustion engine.

The 109 won't have a DPF (providing it's the 646 engine) and will be fine on 15w40 semi synthetic (MB228.3). Merc are actually pretty cheap for the 5l tubs of oil, and you know it's the correct spec. 8.75 litres will do you nicely (providing you remove the oil filter before the sump plug).

Surely you must have some evidence anywhere other than "I done seen it with my own eyes!".

A scientific report from an independent source, something, anything to explain why Halfords fully synthetic "Ford" oil is different from "Tesco" or Shell fully synthetic BMW oil.

Anything?
Sackboy1 to stevenfeeney
30 Apr 16 #58
I don't think you're going to find a scientific report specifically aimed at Tesco and Halfords oil, but there is plenty of stuff out there about different detergent/dispersant packages in oils. Here's just a rough idea of what you can find on the internet:

https://scholar.google.co.uk/scholar?hl=en&q=engine+oil+lubricant+detergent&btnG=&as_sdt=1%2C5&as_sdtp=

If you want to ignore manufacturers guidelines because you don't trust them, then nobodys forcing you to buy the expensive stuff.

Hyundai Dealerships charge £43 for oil for a wee i10 it only take 3.5 litres they are supposed to use this.
I know for a fact that the dealership I go to uses the ULTRATEC brand oil as it has 50 gallon drums of it in the workshop. I usually supply the oil which I can get for the same price as this. Good Deal OP Most main dealerships will allow you to supply the oil for a service which can make a big difference to the cost of a interim service.

I had a BMW a few years back which had 133000 miles on the clock when I bought it and had only been serviced every 35000 (ie only three times in it's life/ every 3 years) - and when I got it I serviced it - I don't think it had done any harm as I sold it at 180000 miles and it still sounded good (3L diesel 6 cylinder engine), I personally service my cars every year with good quality oil changing the oil filter every other service and never had a broken engine or turbo !
jrw
30 Apr 16 #63
Because maybe that is what the oil is designed to do. My mate sold his 1.9PD 130bhp Polo with 195k on the clock he had since new (2004) nearly two years ago now and it is still going. That was on longlife since new and never had a problem besides the turbo going at 165k but that is about the life for a turbo anyway.

I also bought a Bora 1.9PD 130 in 2004 brand new and sold it to my mate in 2013. It is now up to 170k on original everything and everything works fine apart from 5th gear....Maybe if it wasn't on longlife oil the gearbox would be ok?

If you use the wrong oil you risk damaging components in the engine. Problems do occur, but using the wrong spec oil doesn't mean problems will occur. Those of you that insist that the viscosity is the only important factor are talking out of your other mouth. Got a turbo ?
Use the wrong spec and you'll probably damage the bearing in the turbo - or just as bad - your oil will degrade prematurely resulting in a clogged turbo oil feed pipe.
Knowledge is power, ignorance is bliss.

Eurocarparts - always worth a look as they usually have some code to give 15 or 20 per cent off, and their prices are not only highly competitive, but cheaper usually.

I do a lot on cars and mate's 07 Mondeo had a starter motor problem. Can be a **** to get off, but had a quick look and moved rad fan up and I thought, half hour starter will be off. Mangled drive gear. Went to my local motor factor, usually reasonable price... £156.00! What? You must be f joking I said. And I get discount! It was Remy make.
Friend was willing to pay that price, but I wasn't having it. I really hate being done! Had a quick look on eurocarparts, yep in stock RTX make £79 PLUS code gave 15% Discount! so total of £67.15 nearly a hundred quid cheaper. Remy one was similar price, although a Bosch one, pay for the name was much higher. Post free, but I wanted to do it that day, nearest stockist 15 miles away, so in my car picked it up, and 2 hours later is car was back on the road!
yep, EUROCARPARTS 10 out of 10!

Oh yeah, HOT! Not because I want the oil, I don't. Just HOT for Eurocarparts!
Always worth a look, if you don't like being taken for a mug for the price of car parts.

The code on TCB is for 20% off (+20% cashback), not 25%. Therefore worth bearing in mind that if you use the 25% one then you probably wont get cashback, whereas if you use the 20% code you'll get it cheaper in the end, assuming cashback pays out.

very right - although the engine is not that old, I recently bought a Nissan (2001) diesel for my boy to drive over the summer - the engine is so old I had problems finding the oil code as oil has moved on so far since it was produced, the oil should have been changed every 6000 miles but I am guessing 10000 on the semi-synthetic will be easily obtainable (I will add a little 2 stroke oil to the diesel to help the engine as the euro have removed lubrication in the fuel as old engine get killed by that)
