I am upset and distressed with the rude comments here.
A few of us here know what its like to live with a wheelchair. Using one on a regular basis can be distressing enough with people staring at the wheelchair user or just ignoring them completely.
Here in HUKD we like good deals. And thank you for the OP for posing this as it will be useful to some people.
In many places in the UK people used to get free wheelchairs but often now its not provided for free anymore.
As one poster suggested for regular wheelchair users its best to try one so thats its comfortable.
Hope the admins delete the rude comments here, and hope those here who are poking fun at the wheelchair users change their attitudes as you never know when you may need to use one.

In the case of wheelchairs, 'self propelled' means propelled by oneself as opposed to being push by another person.

It's a perfectly innocuous thread for most genuine disabled people and their families that might be interested in this chair to stumble across. It might not be a nice thread for "special snowflakes" to stumble across, but that's nothing to do with needing a wheelchair or not and one might even suggest that it's rather disablist to suggest any connection between needing a wheelchair and being a simpering crybaby.

Are you saying disabled people deliberately fall over things and enjoy it? I don't think that's very funny.

Im a wheelchair user due to a muscular condition. I hate having to use my chair and have found self acceptance extremely difficult I've read the whole thread and I do find it offensive!
I have a sense of humour and an upbeat attitude but that does not extend to blatant disabilism!

Im lucky in that my condition has improved and this year my wheelchair use is limited to days out etc. But being in a situation in the past where wheelchair use was my only option to get out everyday and get on with my life. I can assure you I don't find this thread funny.
I only hope nobody that was in my situation looking to buy their first wheelchair is reading this, as its hard enough when people are nothing but kind!

I'm 6'4" and every chair I've pushed (a fair range of em) has been hard-work because I have to 'stoop' to do it - but some are definately better than others so try before you saddle yourself with one for a period of time!!

They Charge £20 per 8 weeks in Thornaby. Especially helpful when hospitals don't provide them !!!

Why would you not take the pee out of someone in a wheelchair? If you take the pee out of someone not in a wheelchair it would be very discriminatory to not do the same to a wheelchair user. A person is a person, after all. Equality.

Wow, I've no idea why everyone seems to think it is perfectly acceptable to take the **** out of a wheelchair (and by extension, the people who use them). When everyone usually gets their knickers in a twist about being offended by any little thing on here such as the people who can't spell who play the "i'm deselecsic" card, or "you can't say that about diabtus as my son has it" etc etc.

No, that's what wheelchairs with larger wheels for the occupant to move themselves are called as opposed to a transit wheelchair which has smaller wheels like this one

Self Propelled? isnt that a bit misleading? you would called a self propelled lawnmower one the that propels itself without having to push, where as this chair requires some pretty hard manual work to move it.

Don't cheap out on wheelchairs. I bought a £90 version on ebay for the Wife for long days (M.E. and FMS) and it was shockingly bad. Got my money back.

Red cross hire them out for £5 per week which is probably what I'll stick with until we can justify getting a decent one

Exactly! i find the title misleading, but then i dont have a wheelchair it maybe the norm.

Self propelled means you can wheel yourself along in it, which you can't in one with little wheels.

Thanks for the advice - my husband is 6'5" so struggles with all sorts - buying a kids pushchair a few years ago was a nightmare, everything seems to be designed for short people, so I'd imagine wheelchairs aren't much better. I'd be hopeless at self-propelling, I was trying to wheel myself around the house on an office chair and couldn''t even manage that! To be honest I probably don't need one, I can walk a little now and should hopefully be back up on my feet fully before we go - I'll see how the foot recovers in the next couple of weeks and if it's still bad then I'll just send the hubby off in advance to pick up a rented chair from DLP I guess - that'll save hassle taking it with us on the plane, hire car etc. Typical bad timing, but at least it'll be sorted before proper Disney in Florida in the summer...I hope...!



I don't know about wheelchairs for registered disabled people, but we took my mum a few years ago (not disabled, just elderly and unable to walk too far) and had to pay, and I emailed them a few days ago to ask what the situation was and got this response:
The price is 15 euros per day in both parks, a deposit of 50 euros is asked for the rental.

Disabled wheelchairs in DLP are free of charge :smiley:.. better than paying for one.

Yes but only when you haven't a leg to stand on.

As the first person said, don't assume all wheelchairs are made equal - they're not so make sure you get one which suits your needs because the wrong one is worse than nothing-at-all.

They vary in size (esp width), weight and portability (important if you need to fold/lift it into a car) and wheel/tyre type (which can make some surfaces nightmarish) - and the comfort of the thing is super-important for you AND anyone pushing it.

If you're going to be pushed, make sure it's comfortable for the person who'll be doing that - some chairs have low handles which cripple taller people and vice-versa - some hired/used chairs can also be tatty/rattly/old and generally far from ideal.

If you're going to 'self propel', it's about 1000% harder than it looks and make sure you're comfortable doing it in the chair you're taking - if the chair doesn't suit you, you'll be lucky to make it 200m before you feel like you've done the marathon!

Well if you can't walk very far or at all, having a wheelchair is much more fun than not having one!

Surely you should be able to get something like this on prescription on the NHS? Otherwise you're being charged a premium to live your life just because you're disabled, the opposite of how society should treat the disabled in my opinion.

Thanks! I've got a broken foot at the moment and actually considered this for a trip to Disneyland Paris in a few weeks rather than the hassle of hiring one, but I'll give it a miss and might consider renting/borrowing one instead.
