Wow thanks for letting me know. I was under the impression that sd cards would work fine as they are mentioned on the Nvidia website. I'll run with the internal storage for as long as I can and hold fire until I absolutely need more.

Cheers

12 Apr 16 #125
None will, speeds are simply too slow. If you absolutely must add internal then look at a high speed USB stick or even a USB 3.0 portable hard drive, I wouldn't bother looking at SSD as you'll be limited by the USB 3.0 ports.

The bump on the MBP 13" from 128GB to 256GB was £200 - but obviously keep in mind, that was super fast SSD GB not SDXC GB :-)

Still, 128GB of nice normal media storage for £175 less is good eh.

All my cards were bought directly from Amazon or Tescos, they passed h2testw and the packaging didn't have any of the defects that would show them as fakes - I've seen a fake card pass an h2testw test at the high write speeds they should and also the type of failure (the card become write locked) is typical of a genuine card, not a fake one which just fails entirely. Also, I've bought a variety of SD cards in similar capacities and speeds at the same time also from Sandisk without a single failure on any of them. I'm going to try sending the 200GB back to Sandisk instead for a change and see what they say about it being a fake or not.

I have been puzzled by the high rate of failure, I think it's partially bad luck and my sample size is small and I know others that have had similar failures as well. Not that it puts me off buying them entirely but I wouldn't fork out a lot of money for them.

I have a Lumia 950. My apps save to the 32GB of internal memory, my videos/pictures/music/documents are saved to my 128GB Lexar SD.
I imagine Android users buying such cards are doing so with the same usage in mind.
The best thing about my setup? I can remove the card whilst the phone is still switched on, and then stick it in my 2 in 1 and edit/upload photos and videos etc.
Try and get that kind of versatility out of built in storage .
Oh, and I also don't have to pay ridiculous premiums for additional storage...
(If you are an iPhone user, remind me again the difference in price of a 16GB and a 64GB iPhone 6S. Once you've done that calculation, you may start to see the merits that these cheap micro SD cards afford)

Lol - no its android all the way - just get one with a big internal memory! Loads of apps still have problems with sdcards even in marshmallow.
interestedindividual
11 Apr 16 #117
Lol - maybe both! The problems with android and sdcards are well documented all over the web. In brief, there are many big apps (often games) which can't make use of the extra memory. This is still the case with the new adoptable storage in Marshmallow (although it improves the situation). I know there are apps which can force apps onto the sdcard but they sometimes cause bugs. Whether these issues are a glitch or a security feature is also a running debate. That's why I use and recommend a phone with large internal memory.

I've never had a Sandisk card fail on me (touch wood) in over 10 years of using them.
However I've never used a microSD card in a phone so that might be a different story(?)

I never touch eBay or Amazon Marketplace for memory cards, only trust Amazon direct - very happy to have their customer service to fall back should anything go wrong.

Mine definitely wasn't fake. Many years ago I bought a fake Sony M2 (!) card from a third-party Amazon seller and vowed never to be stung again.

I either buy from Amazon themselves, or My Memory, Moby Memory. Always trusted retailers. I give Amazon Marketplace and ebay a miss unless it's somewhere like 7dayshop, etc.

Also, Sandisk check your serial number and verify your card before granting an RMA - which means fake cards would simply not get replaced. There's lots of discussion about Sandisk MicroSD cards failing and being replaced under warranty out there.

Really have to question the validity of Sandisk "Failures" on here, given that ive not ever, ever had a single one go - and neither has anyone else i know. This applies to cards ranging from 16 Mb (Yes Megabyte) to 128GB. If sandisk were really that bad, im certain someone i know would have mentioned it.

I would put money on the vast majority of those failed being down to buying a fake card.

dantesfireplace to PLinford
11 Apr 16 #84
Yes. Just remember it will be slower than the on-board HDD.

I do this currently with my Macbook Air. I have the small adapter that fits into the SD slot with no protruding edge.

I've gone for this to add to a Macbook Pro on the way for work.

If you go for the smaller adapter, make sure you get the right one for the model / year of Macbook you have.

I have had a SanDisk fail in the past but I only use the cards for non precious data, such as films or music etc.

I don't mind them at all. Their speeds can be a little bit off from time to time, but that could be down to a whole range of factors. If they were really that bad why did Samsung put a bid in to buy them back in 2008 for nearly 6 billion (which got declined) and why has Western Digital since bought them out and become their new owner as of October 2015.
Johnmcl7

I find high speed micro SDXC cards unreliable, I've had a couple of Sandisk 32GB's fail, 128GB fail and my 200GB card failed on its first transfer. I've got a few Samsung 64GB micro SD cards which have worked fine so tried a Samsung 128GB card which failed in the first couple of days and its replacement lasted three weeks before failing. A Samsung 32GB micro SD lasted a few months before it also failed.

I have wondered if Samsung are selling fakes as it's happened in the past but from what I can tell they are genuine and the failures are all the same, they initially pass an h2testw report and work without issue but then they go into a failure state where the existing data can be read but nothing else can be. The failures have been in different devices (phones, tablets, cameras etc.) and I've been using different card readers in case one of them is faulty but still getting the failures and normal SD cards have used the same readers without issues.

I've used a similar number of high capacity and high speed full size SD cards and not had one of them fail, I've very rarely had any flash cards fail aside from the garbage smart media cards years ago. I've been wary of returning too many cards to Amazon in case I fall foul of them closing the account as they seem to have with some people.

Good to hear real-life experiences. Would you consider that you put a fairly heavy strain on the cards? I was thinking of putting a high-capacity card in my laptop's card reader and using it as real-time (or near as) backup, but if they can't handle too much workload I'm not so sure I want to go down that road!

Just some general advice on the card. BTW I'm the same reviewer on Amazon that's the top review and in the video i've demoed upload and download on the card.

Just double check that when you put the card in your shopping basket that it's sold by SanDisk and not a 3rd party, so as you can be sure to get a genuine one. I tend to go with the normal packaging and not frustration free, so I get the legit one.

I've made a not in my review about corrupt cards. If it just goes wrong you can always return to Amazon, within 30 days i think. If's beyond that. you can go to Sandisk directly. they have at least a 10-year guarantee on the card, just give them the invoice from Amazon ( you can download a electronic one from your account)

Fake
ByMr. Paul M. Simmonson 14 January 2016
Size: 128 GB|Package Type: Frustration-Free Packaging
|Verified Purchase

Clearly what has been received is not as described. Having just upgraded my phone to an LG4 I decided to ramp up the memory. On receipt of the product I was dubious to say the least that the product did not reflect the usual Sandisk packaging I have purchased in the past. Having reviewed the memory this is nothing like 128GB instead produces a mere 23.1 GB. Pretty shocking considering this came in packaging with amazon printed all over it. Pictures attached are proof this is not what is described.

dantesfireplace to rasdonny

The reviews are a combination of all sizes and all sellers of the same type of card.

The fake card reviews will almost certainly (well pretty much definitely) have come from 3rd Party Sellers, either directly or Fulfilled by Amazon (so Marketplace seller's stock) Not Amazon sold & supplied.
IMH0 to rasdonny
11 Apr 16 #62
when you put it in your basket, I've noticed that it sometimes swaps to another supplier that isn't SanDisk. Entirely possible that they went through the right channels and inadvertently brought a fake one.

Didn't know that about the study. I know I'm one to leave feedback too quickly on eBay to be honest (which ebay want you to do) so does make you think how flawed that system is really.

As you say, each to their own isn't it. I do value others saying about their bad experiences as much as those who state their good ones too. Helps us all make a decision at the end of the day.

Yeah it would be nice if amazon listed the seller info with the reviews, but it will never happen, its the same problem with the Q & A section, especially when its questions regarding models, new vs old.

my original comment was cautionary and not saying all sandisk are fake, beside everyone can only speak or advice based on their experiences...at the end of the day, each to his/her own choices.

re the 60%, there has been study that state that most ppl do indeed assume that because they have received their item and it looks like what they ordered then it must be okay etc and they then gsimply just leave a positive review straight away and some even before even trying out the item...and yes one can indeed know when they receive the item as this was part of the questions in the study of both ebay and amazon customers/reviewers.
rasdonny
11 Apr 16 #53
actually it has happened to me too and that why i will never buy sandisk anymore as they are the no1 cards to be faked and fakes.
biddilybah
11 Apr 16 #52
My comment doesn't suggest there aren't, I'm just saying that the odds are in your favour that it won't happen to you. If we only listened to bad reviews on products, nobody would buy anything.

Just saw your edit. Again, your comment was in relation to someone receiving a fake card. Reliability and quality are a different matter entirely. Also, regarding that point, people are more likely to leave bad reviews than good ones. Therefore, there are more likely to be many more happy customers out there. Not sure where your 60% figure comes from because nobody knows when someone could have received it mind and also, Amazon reviews can be updated further down the line should a fault occur.

Sandisk may have reliability issues in comparison to other brands but if it was as bad as people say, they wouldn't still be in business and one of the biggest manufacturers of storage today. I've never had one fail in my experience (famous last words  ) but that doesn't mean they're all reliable just as your experience doesn't suggest they're all faulty or fake either
biddilybah
11 Apr 16 #51
That sucks that you went through that, but it's from Amazon at the end of the day. They'll happily collect and replace/refund your item if that happens.
rasdonny
11 Apr 16 #50
I knew that by the way...but that doesnt make it not true that fakes are being sold.

and ask for the 1,600 (5*) reviews - there are at least 60% of ppl who leave positive reviews in less that 1 hr after they have recieved an items, so relying on positive reviews is def not the way to go, as not that reliable re quality or reliability, as many positive reviewer are mighty trigger happy!

Yup, I am using one on my S7 as a camera storage and so far so good. On PC crystaldiskmark shows 94/35 so pretty good I must say for a card at that price. With S3 and Note 2 there were a lot of issues, personally with a Lexar card getting corrupt numerous times - it was due to the phone I think, not to the cards. I know it's Monday and early ish...but I've just read down and to me HH is informing you that szaman posted the deal after this one and I can't see where HH has even suggested that he, himself, posted the deal? So unless some comments have been removed, I don't know what you're saying.

So a site helper has stolen the deal you posted. Why am I not surprised!

Reason enough not to bother.

it's funny you should say that as I had a lexar card which done the same thing In an s2.. using Samsung cards for 5/6 years now and no issues since!.
And who knows it could've been due to a faulty batch from lexar.

I used that article when I RMA'd an old card before Christmas, they assured me that issue has since been resolved.

I've since bought a few more newer cards off here plus the new upgraded one from my RMA and they've all been fine, so I'm guessing its cool now.

Makes me laugh though that lots of people had issues using certain cards in Samsung products. I often wonder if these faults were intentional on Samsung's part, seen as they're Sandisk's main competitor in the memory card market and seen as how they would have much to gain by making their competitors cards fail, or look bad.

Especially as they have a history of being dirty towards their competitors. Remember when Samsung were caught and prosecuted for paying reviewers to give their competitors products bad reviews .. Very dodgy indeed

Saving downloads and photos to it. The failure rate of the 64gb cards was dreadful, wondering if (hoping) it might have changed.

I thought the issues with the red/silver Sandisk MicroSDs were well known, I was pretty surprised when I started digging. Hopefully they've managed to resolve them with these newer cards. http://www.phonearena.com/news/SanDisk-says-it-produced-some-bad-32GB-and-64GB-microSD-cards_id40986

"Warning: SanDisk SD Cards in Galaxy S4 & S5 and Notes 2 & 3" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GATwDqQMwTE In my case, I was using a Note 2 at the time and a silver/red 64GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSDXC.

shame it's Sandisk, i have no faith in their abilities to make a microsd form factor card... been **** too many times... Samsung evo all the way for me... £25 if Samsung, deal! sandisk? save your money and files elsewhere

Corking price. I've went off Sandisk after my 64GB silver/red card failed (though Sandisk replaced it under warranty). I went for a Samsung 128GB a few months back.

Erm, it says "coming soon" on the deals page, although the £25.99 seems reasonable.
