Don't know if the link is dodgy, but using the words "gammon" and "steak" to describe something that's made of of dried beans and regurgitated sprouts certainly is.

Us meat eaters don't go about shaping hamburgers into tubes so we can call them "meat cucumbers", or fashion slaughtered deer into spheres so we can call them "venison tomatoes".

It's also worth remembering that if you eat only a vegetarian diet, you're responsible for far more animal deaths than omnivores. They're just smaller animals that don't get eaten and die as a by-product of your selfish inhumane animal hating vegetarianism.

Sorry to break the news, but that is a pathetic source of information. She doesn't give any references to check anything she says, apart from an entire journal. Just "Scientists say..". Try sticking to something more credible than The Telegraph.

I would say the mince is a good place to start, I regularly cook chilli, spag bol and lasagne for meat eaters. I stir a bit of marmite in it which gives it a bit of a "meatier" taste. The quorn pieces are good as chicken alternative in stir frys.

So doesn't mean very much then. It basically says that converting land to farm land harms the wildlife and that the best solution is only eating animals farmed very extensively which is the exact opposite of how animals are farmed now. Most farmed animals are eating soy and grain which takes you back full circle to what those articles say are the cause of the problem to wildlife.

As someone who is "veg-curious", what would be the best form of Quorn to try - the mince or something like this?

Don't get me wrong, the only way you'll stop me from eating a bacon roll is to pry it out of my cold dead hands, but for the benefit of the planet and everything in it, Quorn could help me scale back on the meat consumption.

I don't want to get involved in any debate about cancer or brain shrinkage though thanks! :stuck_out_tongue:

SUPER LEEDS TO YOU !! You just can't let it lie can you? As for "lovely" pulled pork or pig as it should be called I didn't eat it when I ate meat. I don't preach about our diet being better than a meat eaters, mine certainly isn't unless 30 or 40 pints a week is good for you :stuck_out_tongue: each to their own but why the obsession with veggies? By the way when I did eat meat my favourite was a roast beef Sunday dinner or cooked cow as it should be known,
wakeywarrior
23 Apr 16 1 #41
Sorry to have to come back to a Leeds fan, but there is now plenty of developing research on this. It is a bit like saturated fat used to be bad for you, so eat low fat products- v bad advice. We have now had it fed to us for years that vegetarianism is better for us, and this is turning out to also be very wrong. As I said, eating tons of red meat isn't a good idea either, but a balanced diet is certainly the preferable option for a long and healthy life.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/29/long-term-vegetarian-diet-changes-human-dna-raising-risk-of-canc/
When I am tucking into my melt in the mouth pulled pork and 5 hour low and fall of the bone slow ribs (3-2-1 method) tonight, I will raise a glass to my anxiety ridden veggie chums and enrich my body with essential nutrients without relying on supplements to prevent brain shrinkage.

The Oxford University study by Vogiatzoglou et al. does not mention a vegetarian or vegan diet, nor does their entire paper. It does find a correlation between some (but not all) measurements of vitamin B12 status and brain volume in the elderly (who we can assume were mostly meat-eaters). This shouldn't be a big surprise since it has long been known that B12 can affect brain tissue. The very easy answer to this is for vegans to take vitamin B12 supplements. In fact, the Institute of Medicine has long suggested that anyone over the age of 50 eat B12 fortified foods or supplements.

In summary, there is nothing new regarding the the CCF's claims about a vegan diet. We have known for years that vegans should make sure they get vitamin D and vitamin B12, and there is no evidence that vegans suffer more from rickets or brain shrinkage than meat-eaters.
wakeywarrior
23 Apr 16 #33
The unintelligent comment was the poor analogy. Research on brain shrinkage indicates lack of vitamin B12 is a major factor, with the scientific evidence indicating this is more of a problem with vegetarians-Vogiatzoglou A, et al. Vitamin B12 status and rate of brain volume loss in community-dwelling elderly. Neurology 2008; 71(11): 826-32

Bad analogy. Sesame sticks are sticks, a stick doesn't have to come from a tree. Jelly babies are not meant to taste like eating real babies, they are confectionary in the shape of a baby. Whereas this stuff is trying (badly) to look and taste like gammon. See the difference? With each one containing 24% of your daily salt intake you also want to eat these with perhaps more caution than a few jelly babies and sesame sticks. Smoker should be up to temp now, got to go again.

Encouraging vegetariasm needs to come with some sensible warnings so people can make informed choices. You have more chance of suffering cancer, 50% more chance of suffering allergies, and much higher chance of anxiety and depression than moderate meat eaters. Of course too much red meat is bad too. Got to go, as got up early as I have a pork shoulder going on my smoker now for the next 11 hours with some hickory and apple wood, for a beautiful low n slow pulled pork. Think I'll pass on the vat grown reformed fungus thanks.

Peanuts can be very dangerous for some people to eat, yet supermarkets sell packets of them in droves. Someone should tell Tesco, they could end up an accessory to manslaughter..

It's basically like saying people shouldn't eat non-poisonous mushrooms because some people are allergic to them. It's just another fungus.

It's funny. I never see these meat eating trolls abusing vegetarians in the vegetarian section at the supermarket. Perhaps they're too obese to leave the house? Or maybe they're heroic keyboard warriors fighting the good fight against the misappropriation of nationally treasured words, like lard and constipation.

I'm not a veggie, I love my meat, but you do know people who eat meat also eat quorn? Most quorn products are ridiculously high in protein compared to the calories, I personally love quorn, it's fantastic for gym goers/losing weight.
Personally I think there's nothing wrong with the product, I've had fantastic results using it for the last year or so.

Dried beans and regurgitated sprouts? Quorn consists of mycoprotein which is produced by fungi. It's also produced in vats, so no animals are harmed in that process although most Quorn products do use eggs as a binding agent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scO2ZZKFjMk

However even if it was produced in fields, it would be dwarfed by the large amount of crops which are used to feed livestock.... It doesn't take a genius to work out why that's an incredibly inefficient way of feeding people.
