A lot of people in the know believe that the so called dangerous units were mistreated, being shorted out etc. The exchange system also introduced unknown variables, if you took a powerbank in to swap for a charged one you had no idea if it had been abused or misused.
Several teardowns online conclude that the device is fundementally safe, well built and has has decent protection circuitry. The media made a big deal out of it and created a PR disaster for EE but the devices aren't inherently unsafe by design, much better than what you're likely to find in pound world most probably.

I never said later batches weren't recalled, what I'm saying is their is nothing wrong with the newer models. EE specifically recalled the first batches first but then later decided to scrap the whole thing followed by a full recall.

While I understand your position I feel your stubbornness has caused you to miss out. I had 4 pay as you go sim cards, 2 I had free from EE and 2 I paid 99p each for from eBay. I got 4 power bars. They were pretty handy while the scheme ran as the ability to swap them over for charged power banks mean over the course of a day out in London I could use my phone as I pleased and always have a full battery. Then came the recall and I was able to swap the power banks in for £20 vouchers. In my case I got lucky when dealing with the staff in store and got 5 vouchers for 4 power banks. I used those vouchers for 4 4500mAh Kit batteries with built in micro USB cable and microSD card reader, and a Kit 60 Watt 10 port USB charger (10 ports at 1 amp output or 5 at 2 amp).
I'm not 100% sure but I don't think they're handing out vouchers any more.

To withhold something from its owner is theft, even on a 'free' hire agreement.
If EE want it they can send a SAE with a £20 voucher or refund my travel costs to store ontop of my £20 voucher, I should not be 1p out of pocket for a product recall

18 Apr 16#53
You may as well put it on gumtree and sell it for a fiver for collection as im sure someone else will happily mop up the 20 pound voucher.

Do they refund my expenses to travel there? no, will they send a SAE, no...

"I think people forget these cheap things can actually do a lot of electrical damage. So when you buy a £1 power pack and plug it into your £600 phone or something expensive, good luck."
Bear in mind as revealed on TV that Apple phones only cost £6 in parts in the Far East to make and all the rest are mark ups ,
if Apple were marketing the £1 power pack , they would probably charge Apple users £50 for it ! In the news recently Apple only expects its products to last 3 years too. So the price of something is no indicator and a cheap power pack will just not charge a phone as much . If your phone is flat and you need to make a call then any power pack is worth having and the pound ones will just have less storage power in them .

The YouTube reviewer mentioned above took both versions apart and found them to be good quality. I think EE got bad press for something that was beyond their control, since those units seem to be about as good quality as they could have been.

Let's be honest here, it was the first batch that they wanted recalled but the later batches are fine. I still have a few of the newer batches and have no issues after multiple charges. But like any electrical device, I charge when I'm in the house rather than over night when asleep or when I'm out.

not glued - easy to open. I've been told it contains an unprotected cell (I just saw a cell), so can in theory be "upgraded" to a bigger battery (18650 aka "vape battery).IF you have the knowledge. Messing around with lithium cells is dangerous unless you know what you're doing.
