Play sand is cleaned. Some building sand is very sharp and will wear your skin down.

As far as I'm concerned, sand is sand!..... I played on the beach, in sandpits and on building sites as a kid and I'm fine.

I'd guess building sand has a wider particle range distribution to help with compaction, play sand may be graded to a narrower particle size range.

I have kids and they get builders sand, they've yet to notice any difference.

Play sand is usually just kiln dried building sand. They may also claim its washed , but what exactly needs washing out of sand i do not know.
Sharp sand is the one to avoid for kids ( building sand has finer grains )

Play sand is good for filling the gaps between paving slabs, as it runs into the gaps better being completely dry.

This is a good find. Was going to get some from argos but this is great for a fish tank. Needs washing and washing again.
