Just to point out that the Sram Rival version of this bike is now also £799.99 this weekend. Link

However, as previously posted, their stand out weekend deal is £899.99 for the RTD-80 Disc SRAM Rival 11 bike. Link.

I got the full ultegra for £999 in 2014 and thought I got a great deal! Didn't realise it went as low as £799 last year. Think I saw a "6800 mix" but that didn't have the excellent 6800 brakes so didn't feel too hard done by.
I think £799 is rrp for this 5800 version. Still a great bike for the money don't get me wrong.
Don't know where they got "was £899" on the website because I got an email a few weeks ago introducing the new 5800 pro carbon for £799. And now it's on offer at £799?!?!

Performance wise really not much in it both are ridiculously good and super close to ultegra is performance (just a small touch heavier). Reason I like the Sram is mainly the shape of the hoods is comfier for my large hands and also running a 32 wifli on the back for big climbs. Just personal preference really.

Nice bike, could be tempted with one of them, possibly the 105, I haven't had any experience with rival, would you says it's better than 105?
bikebikes
25 Apr 16 #70
Went for the le'etape model (Rival). Not a huge fan of the colours but frame is meant to be excellent, have 2 club mates who swear by them. Will stick the Yoleo on it, even at £100 more overall i think this is a steal.

Yeah I'm the same, I'd have bought it with the visions so I could sell them on, but the way they did that, and their response has put me off, shame really as it looked like a very good buy.
What bike have you gone for instead?
bikebikes
25 Apr 16 #68
They saw it went hot and went to squeeze that extra blood out. Officers club=Sports direct=Planet X. Homepage full of fake sales.

Just about would have gone for this with the vision 35 but the downgrade + shady behaviour was enough to put me off Planet X and order from Dolan bikes instead.

I emailed them asking about the sudden change to the cheaper wheels, this is the reply I got

I'm actually going to leave ordering one for now, no hurry to get it and hopefully a better deal or even a discount code will come along

25 Apr 16 #66
I tried it with the arm folded down, its how i first fitted it, it looked good and compact, but it wouldnt register with the magnet on the spokes, tried angling it and no go, so i had to pop the arm up.

I suppose i could have just set the speed to gps on the garmin and just used the sensor for cadence
chrisbass
25 Apr 16 #65
I know! I have both!

When i first saw it i didnt see the arm pointing upwards and it looked smaller than usual, i can see it isn't now!

just a tip - if you hang it under the chainstay should the arm catch a spoke it won't be pulled into the wheel and break. If you have room between the chainstay and the spokes if you fold the arm all the way down it looks a bit neater too.

One pothole, split downtube completely from top to bottom - this was a Bianchi. Two Trek Madone Frames, cracked the chainstays, just from normal riding, Fuji, the glue bonding the aluminum inserts to the bottom bracket weaking and it destroyed the shell. Oh yes, and Cube that cracked the area around the rear hanger. It wasnt even dropped! I have had friends that have damaged Alloy frames, but none of them were write offs, just dents.

How did each of them manage to crack the frame; crash or just from the bike falling over etc?

23 Apr 16 #62
I still think despite fluctuation the price offered for the Pro Carbon and RT-58 is great. I'll be buying the RT-58 when I get paid on Monday.
bikebikes
23 Apr 16 #61
Yup was going to stick my Yoleo on it and pocket the cash off selling the visions. They actually have a record of waiting until a deal goes hot through (not just on HUKD) then they do something shifty to catch people out and make their margins greater.

Examples are offering Ultegra full and pulling switches to mix (sometimes even within hours) offering big discounts on clothing and when the deal gets picked up online and starts getting shared they will keep the xxxl or xsmall at the discount price and bump the others. Like someone said they are fast becoming the delboys/sports direct of the biking world.
souljacker
23 Apr 16 #60
Yes, just seen that, there were three sets of wheels which were all the free option but today the shimano and visions are now a paid upgrade  bit dodgy that
Doesn't bother me though as I was going to put my fulcrum 3's on it.
bikebikes
23 Apr 16 #59
No surprises then that Planet X are up to their old tricks! They garner interest then pull the bait and switch and treat customers like mugs.

Listed bike above now comes with the crappy Khamsin wheels instead of the better vision 35 this was originally listed. Visions are now a £50 upgrade.

For anyone interested heres the now 5 page thread over on bikeradar about Planet X fake sales.

Planet X bikes are decent but the prices are all over the place. At one point you could get the alu RT-58 with full Tiagra for £500, then £400, then £600.

I am not setting any records, and am very unlikely to gash anybodies leg in a pile up, so disc brakes are a must for me. I grabbed a kaffenback last year at a brilliant price. Love Planet X, but if you are in no rush, absolutely take your time and wait for codes or price changes.
This bike looks swish, and 8.4kg is the weight I fluctuate when I get a flu, comfort eat and get lazy. Whoever buys this, drive safely.

Depends on the ones you've seen before. The one on this bike is the 'old' style Garmin speed/cadence sensor. It works by having a little magnet on a spoke. Every time that magnet passes the sensor, it knows one revolution has happened and calculates speed like that. The cadence sensor should be on his pedal arm.

'Newer' Garmin speed/cadence sensors are a bit nicer in that you don't have a sensor on the chainstay. You have one that wraps around the hub of the rear wheel, and then one that attaches to a pedal arm and that's it - everything out of the way.

They both achieve the same thing and work well, but the newer version is easier to set up, move between bikes, and a lot harder to 'knock' and mis-align anything. I hope that helps
chrisbass
22 Apr 16 #34
I know what a computer is and what a sensor is! i was looking at the picture you posted and the sensor (or at least what i thought was a speed and cadence sensor) on the chainstay looked different to the normal garmin ones.
Jamjaw
22 Apr 16 #33
It is not a sensor - it is a computer. The sensor is a completely separate bit that goes on crank/hub....

I have the pro carbon (2014 105 version) and the first and best 'upgrade' I made was to put a Spoon on it... I can't believe you got the Ultegra for £799.... that is incredible, I was tempted not to believe it as well until you posted that receipt.

I would say that the Pro Carbon is a 'lively' bike. It doesn't accelerate like my brothers Pinarello but it's twitchy (responsive) and enjoyable to ride... at the prices Planet X charge, I don't think you can grumble at all.

I have 2 charge spoon saddles, i agree, its a great comfy saddle and cheap.

Like i say i did 1,000 miles around the peak district, my rides always have a lot of climbing in them between 1500ft and 4500 ft of climbing on each one , i average 15-18 mph on my own over 30 to 45 miles.

The pro carbon was great, realy comfy, good up the hills, i loved it, sold it after about 5 months, it was just a tad too big for me, im 6ft, and even with a shorter stem on i was stretching too much.

I would have another one but in a medium.

I just got the frame in the liquidation sale in bare carbon for £269 and it is a really good looking frame and good quality from what I can see. Never going to be as good quality as a Cervelo but I'd rather have good not great quality and still be able to pay the mortgage. Don't forget Topcashback if you're buying this it's 2.62% so £20.93 back in your pocket too.

There was Ultegra 6800 available for 799 last year, at moment it hovers between 899-999. The cheaper ones at moment have "Ultegra Mix" (always a deal breaker for me on bikes, I hate when they use cheaper chainsets rather than Shimano!)

There is a thread on a bike forum about planet x prices, smoke and mirrors its called, they alter them all the time, more so than DFS , and with these codes they churn out all the time, you have to keep an eye on them.

Sometimes though, like the pro carbon i got, you can get a very good deal.

i paid £799 for the full ultegra pro carbon last year, pretty good bike, i did 1000 miles on it in 4 months, which i think is the right price for it to be honest, i think planet x get these frames pretty cheap.

Id say 650 is the right price for this.
lordpt to Balb0wa
22 Apr 16 2 #11
No you didn't.

650 is the right price? Do you even know how much full Shimano 105 costs? So you are saying that a carbon frame, carbon fork, 2 wheels, 2 tires(&tubes), saddle, seatpost, etc, are only worth £300? Are you mad?
steve_cunningham
22 Apr 16 1 #10
I can't recommend Planet X enough, the customer service is fantastic. I have bought a CX, fatty and disc road bike from them and been equally impressed with each bike. Yes, I have heard the carbon frames are not as good as other more expensive rivals, but for my budget and level of cycling skills I doubt it would make a difference to me.

Liveliness of a bike is so hard to judge though.

Fantastic bike for the money. Sure PlanetX use open moulds usually and they're not as good as some of the patented mouoss from bigger names but still decent for the money.

105 would cost you £300 on its own
