Because of your dslr background I dont think you ll enjoy a camera without a viewfinder. Coming from a point-and-shoot, and sticking on a budget, it took me 3 bodies to realise that I need one desperately.

Its not just the direct sunlight, personally, Im not able to get fast a proper frame composition on the screen. Have to take 10 shots every time, wasting 10x more time, and get stressed and frustrated if, for example, I am on a holiday trip. Slow shutter speeds are also problematic, handheld without viewfinder, I have to use delay most of the time.

Cool, maybe I'll wait for the A5100 price drop, I've got a couple of months before the next trip.

when the a5100 drops to 279ish on amazon lightning deals as it does pretty often then its a much harder choice between gx7 and a5100
(but much easier to see why a5000 @ 230 isn't so good! )

There's a fairly large jump in price to the A5100 though, I may as well get the A6000 if I'm spending that much.
I do understand your point about the EVF. I've used my Nikon DSLR for the first time in a couple of years last week and recall why I bought one, it was so nice to use, also why I haven't lugged it around for so long, it was so heavy!

well its cheapish for a prime @ 150quid but then the camera usually comes with the pz1650 at a premium of 50quid over body only so its really 100quid more than the kit lens and only 7.5mm slimmer

Agree with Brilly about the Sony 16mm, it's generally a pretty poorly regarded lens. I have one myself, and there's not much advantage to that over the 16-50 pz since the 16 prime is only fractiinally smaller, isn't much faster, and optically it isn't noticeably better. Sony do a 20mm pancake which is meant to be much improved, however it's overpriced and doesn't stack up as well as the panny 20mm f/1.7. The panny 20mm is a cracking lens and should be on anyone's list who goes for this package.

Hot deal by the way. One left-field alternative might be the LX100- which uses the same sensor (albeit slightly cropped) but with a fixed, very fast and compact zoom lens. You lose the versatility of interchangeable lenses but it's impossible to get that range in such a fast and compact package otherwise. CEX do used ones for around this price or less depending on condition and availability, which have their 2 year warranty. Doesn't detract from the heat here, just a potential alternative if you don't mind taking a punt with used gear.

Not that I have it, so can't comment first hand. I personally love my NEX with a 50mm 1.7, which is all the prime I think I'll need.

what? 16mm is universally panned
if using stopped down a bit for landscapes which is the 'usual' usage of wide angle then the 16-50 is just as good really

best prime lens for a6000 is basically the one that you would use, there isn't that much variety really :wink:
a 8mm prime isn't very good for distant wildlife etc
find the focal length you want then see what lenses there are

It is more expensive indeed. Can be had for less than £500. And yes you'd most likely buy other lenses along the way. The kit Sony lens is rather poor but a nice compact lens for travel.
Going for MFT has a lot of advantages. But if you're thinking of upgrading later, buy once and well. Buy a Sony. Just my opinion.

I've wanted to take up Photography for some time now, what's this like as a first camera? I know it's quite expensive (whilst being a good deal) but would like some input on this before pulling the trigger.

I'm wavering between the Sony A5000 kit for £230 or this kit. Anyone has an opinion?

Good price. But a6000 all the way in my opinion. Worth the extra if you're a hobbyist.

I bought this at the photography show last month as a backup to my GH4. It's great for street photography.

Sony user here but the price difference between this and the A6000 makes it impossible for me to vote cold! Primes are cheap as well and the image quality will be good enough for 95% of casual photographers. I love my A6000 for the fast AF and low-light but if you don't need that then this is beauty.

I went the opposite, love the nex bodies but they don't have the right compact primes for me. The panasonic 20mm pancake lens + lower end olympus/Panasonic body makes a great pocketable combo for a casual day trip (for serious work I bring out the nikon).

I'm also one who went from m4/3 to Sony NEX. m4/3 just wasn't enough, given that it wasn't that compact a camera. The NEX is a similar size, similar price, better low light, and has all of the same benefits - unless you want long range, in which case the m4/3 crop factor is pretty good.

I went through a couple of m4/3 cameras including the G3. I never really got on with them and never found the photos to be any better than a good bridge camera. They were fiddly to use, slow to focus in anything except good light and even raw photos didn't produce brilliant results. And the sensor doesn't quite seem big enough to get some nice depth of field effects even with a fast prime. Last year I looked to upgrade again and was underwhelmed by the GX7 after playing with it for an hour in Jessops. In the end I swapped my G3 and lenses for a Sony a6000 with kit lenses and a prime... Much happier.

It was probably just me... but try before you buy.

I assume my old G3 lenses will for this without an adaptor ?

Thinking to swap a5100 with stock lens for this...
