I own a Shield TV Pro - the 500gb version
My view on it is
If you are just after an android box for streaming - get any other android TV box as they will all do what you want to do.
However if you are a gamer, get the Shield
Easily the most powerful gaming android TV box and can run anything android gaming based with ease, benchmarks are off the charts, beating most other boxes by quite some way.
Gamers who like retro stuff are in for a treat as if you have the Roms, you can play
Atari 2600, 5200, Lynx
Nintendo Nes, snes, n64, gamecube, which and everything else in-between
Sega Master system, megadrive to Dreamcast
Sony Ps1, Psp
mame for all the old arcade classics
Missed off quite a few more like Pc Engine and Neo geo
My 500gb is nearly full of just the retro stuff but in the shield store, you can get Half Life, Portal and quite a few more and if you want to pay £7.99 a month you can stream Pc games like Batman, Mad Max etc from Nvidia's mega Pcs
Easily the best home gaming console for a retro gamer.
This is why they hold their price so well

What the hell is this thing? Please don't tell me its an amazing console thing EDIT
ohhhh kay so yer I understand, I think this would be amazing! It's price is great! but kinda pointless if you have a gaming PC as Steam link is £40. Still I am loving the fact this could play the newest games ever by streaming direct to your TV, have I got the wrong end of it?

Easy to install micro sd-cards and/or add external hard drive, with the android marshmallow update these can incorporated into internal memory.
Gazmando to alphaomega16

Since the Android Marshmallow update you can set external memory as internal memory so a 16gb model is not really a problem anymore (In my opinion that is).

Obviously. You also need a Fire Stick, Fire 4K Box, Roku, Now TV box (or two, they're so cheap), Chromecast Audio (these things are brilliant) and at least one of those Chinese Android boxes. Don't forget of course the HDMI switch thingy as you'd need more than the 3-4 slots on your TV! As my other half says, pity we'll only ever have two eyes.

android is Linux. You would need to root the box then it would open up new avenues to explore. I think a program called Busybox will add the shell commands to make a it a more conventional version of Linux.

7 Apr 161#33
The Minix neo U1 does not offer the same specs and/or features as this. both are 4K capable and excellent for media streaming but the Shield is far more powerful graphically and comes with many gaming and emulation features.
The Shield is gaming machine and streamer in one.

Largely the biggest advantage Shield has is that it can run Kodi for peoples dodgy TV/film streams. Plus it can Stream PC games over your network to a big screen - assuming you have a gaming PC.
Basher Walls to am_289
7 Apr 161#48
If you read my post from earlier, the Shield will do far more than the modern consoles if you are into retro games.
Neither of the new consoles can play emulators from classic consoles of the past yet.
You don't need a gaming pc rig to play Pc games on the shield. Nvidia now service gives you about 50 games which stream from Nvidia's mega gaming pc rigs and you just stream them, the games look better than PS4 or Xbox One, if you have the connection speed but this service costs £7.99 a month.
You cannot stream Pc games to android TV boxes, just the Shield but you need compatible graphics card
I own a Xbox One and a PS4 but I really do see a place for the Shield TV.
Best of all, it's tiny and hardly noticeable as a device, mine fits under my Sony TV's stand which is only about 25mm
Oh and app stores...
The Sheild does not have the Google Play store. Bad news
But you can install Es file Explorer from the nvidia store and then open the Google browser in favourites tab in Es file Explorer.
Now search for aptoide or aptoide TV and you are set.

Bought this in black friday sale, complete overkill for Kodi alone
Kodi hangs/freezes and become irresponsive at least once a week requiring a restart (running the beast rom)
if like me you have a hacked wii dont play PC games then save your money and get a stable cheaper Android box
Controller has more functions than the remote which I left in its box.
I was running a stable Jailbroken Apple TV 2 greater memory is the only Plus on this device 4k has no content.
But hey since I bought one and dont want to suffer from buyers remorse I will keep bleating on abput how its the flagship of android boxes and the specs of the next best device doesnt come anywhere near it. wothout the PC gamin or rom Emulation its a bit like having a Range Rover in Kengsington
Basher Walls to dappodan1
7 Apr 162#57
Beast rom is your issue there.
It's bloatware and buggy at best. It seems the Beast Dev has just clusterbombed every addon into the build and half don't work.
If you want a good Kodi build, use pulse as is a lot more streamlined.
Personally get a hold of Lodi apk and side load it on.
It's a fantastic Kodi fork which works flawlessly

7 Apr 16#55
Because this is Android TV. The Android app is build for touchscreens, Android TV runs with controller/remote, so up/down/left/right buttons don't work in the Amazon app :/
Probably good as a HTPC solution. Otherwise 'smart' functionality comes baked in with everything nowadays... not necessarily well-baked mind you. The gaming aspect looks interesting but at 150 it seems a better idea to save one's pennies for an actual console.
I have N64, Genesis and Snes running flawlessly looks great
I use Retrobox for the other stuff at the moment while I build the Hyperspin setup for the other consoles.

Thanks- your posts have been really informative and have given me a lot to think about! I was primarily concerned with TV streaming (not being able to use Amazon prime would be a shame since thats what I have), but the retrogaming aspect sounds cool!

Do these have an active XBMC/KODI/??? Dev/User community? I'm thinking with such a huge userbase they must have?
I've had 3 separate android boxes over the last 2+ years (Nobrand, Sumvision, Minix) all of which have failed after a few months and it gets a bid tedious rebuilding your skins and library etc. from scratch.
Thinking this could be the way forward (Can't use Amazon Fire TV Box as need Optical, I know I'd have to use a USB to SPDIF with this)

Just advice :
I have one  Yes it was fun first 2-3 months . bought from google play maybe 20 games
Do I play them maybe couple of them - other games bought ?do not know why maybe just to try .
I have rooted to have little android experience - life become more happy But than I have Galaxy Tab S2 where I prefer to read emails , or web
So real usage was for Kodi , and chrome Games maybe ones a month or try
My point / Review
Shield TV is advertised as near as PS4 or Xbox game machine or Super power android TV
Yes I have this cool GPU but it is not used as there not many games using this power GPU
Google play do not have many games to maxi GPU to game console levels- yes there are specialty created games for Nvidia but they for £10 + for simple games .. ... Now I can buy used PS4 games for £10-20 and they proper games not android games
and problems with controller sometimes it is works touch sometimes does not and it is not same quality as xbox or PS4
IF YOU PLAN TO USE AS GAME MACHINE ?? THINK TWICE
IF YOU HAVE SPARE MONEY AND WANT KODI YES IT IS OK
IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY JUST BUY CHEAP ADNROID TV WITH KODI AND ENJOY RESULT WILL BE SAME AS NVIDIA SHIELD THEY SHOW MOVIES

8 Apr 16#87
Not tried donkey Kong, will today sometime but I would be stunned if it didn't work.
As for controller. The shield controller feels much like the Xbox original (the huge one from day one) to hold which is a good thing but the d pad is just like all the others, just average.
If you are after a solid d pad you can get a retro Snes Bluetooth controller which will work fine.
As for emulators, a few are on the nvidia play store, they cost money and others can be sideloaded via apk.
Personally I would download and pay for Retrobox as it's a multi emulator with 150 games on. It's not cheap at about £8 I think but it has most of the emulators built in apart from Dreamcast and Gamecube but they are expected to come.
As for roms - Emuparadise (Google it)
Once you have retrobox, you may want to visit Rmkodi.uk and register as they have some roms too and instructions to install extras.

Now to start researching what Kodi build I need and Emulators..

I get the same when going through PP. I tried going through as a Guest checkout and the summary comes up "Store cannot bill to this country", so I'm guessing that's the reason there's no checkout button - it can't bill to the UK.

Make sure you are using the Nvidia UK site, I just tried it again without problems. Also, might be worth contacting EBuyer to double check as the wording on their site suggests it's two controllers "including controller... plus free wireless controller".

There are a few 'touch screen' only games that do not appear in the Play Store for Nvidia TV. However, you can normally find the .apk's online to sideload, whether or not they would work with the controller is another matter.

Juat my takenbut its a device thats only really worthwhile if you have multiple uses. Had mones 4 months now and its one of the beat purchases iv made. Defintely a good purchase if you tick two or more of these boxes:
Advanced Kodi (heavy skins, large library, pvr etc)
Top end 4k support (60hz etc)
Pc game streaming
Ps4 game streaming
Retro Gaming beyond PS1
Top end android gaming
Theres definetly better purchases for basic kodi/media players but if your looking for top end + gaming options this is amazing.

This is why they hold their price so well

ohhhh kay so yer I understand, I think this would be amazing! It's price is great! but kinda pointless if you have a gaming PC as Steam link is £40. Still I am loving the fact this could play the newest games ever by streaming direct to your TV, have I got the wrong end of it?
SNES, Megadrive, N64, Amiga, GameCube, PS1 etc etc.
All the emulators run brilliantly and I'm happy with my Shield TV.
Would have thought nowadays something like this would have been 250 minimum if it has a 500GB model but as low as 16GB jeez.
You beat me to it, Robert.
The Shield is gaming machine and streamer in one.
Look st the shield forum in misc to unlock it's full potential

if you want 4K TV, why not fire stick or TV?
Am I missing anything?

It does look sleek mind you.
Your emulators and retro stuff can look like this
Hyperspin on Shield tv
I have N64, Genesis and Snes running flawlessly looks great
I use Retrobox for the other stuff at the moment while I build the Hyperspin setup for the other consoles.
Thanks- your posts have been really informative and have given me a lot to think about! I was primarily concerned with TV streaming (not being able to use Amazon prime would be a shame since thats what I have), but the retrogaming aspect sounds cool!
I might just end up dabbling with a streaming stick for starters just to get my fingers wet- but the Shield seems awesome for the long run!
The other thing you can do with this is stream your PC game to you anywhere in the world.
I've had 3 separate android boxes over the last 2+ years (Nobrand, Sumvision, Minix) all of which have failed after a few months and it gets a bid tedious rebuilding your skins and library etc. from scratch.
Thinking this could be the way forward (Can't use Amazon Fire TV Box as need Optical, I know I'd have to use a USB to SPDIF with this)
No idea what this looks like in the real world tho as i dont have a 4K TV.
https://shield.nvidia.co.uk/android-tv/shield-androidtv-vs-appletv-vs-roku-vs-firetv
Does what it says on tin and can sideload Kodi onto device now without any issue
Yes any Bluetooth or usb keyboard works fine.
I use one of those mini Rii keyboards with trackpad and it's fine
IF YOU WANT TO SAVE MONEY JUST BUY CHEAP ADNROID TV WITH KODI AND ENJOY RESULT WILL BE SAME AS NVIDIA SHIELD THEY SHOW MOVIES
shame uk on demand apps are missing but great for kodi
It is a great allround box with the potential to be something very special if Nvidia decide to go with it.
Only fly in the ointment is you cant connect up a HDD to USB but if you have a NAS then Kodi will find that.
So I tried it a second time and it worked fine.
It works using Mame 2014 but you need to obtain the rom
Now to start researching what Kodi build I need and Emulators..
Does anyone know, does this specifically need the Nvidia controllers to function? I'm thinking of selling these and just using my 360 wireless, and using my existing Minix A2 air mouse for Kodi/browsing etc. Any problems in that?
In the end I just rang up their customer services and ordered over the phone. Lengthy, but achieved the end result.
Clearly states 2nd controller included - Scan code is LN71386
I suspect I will mainly use this as a streamer as I don't really like gaming - so probably overkill.
Quite tempted by the emulators though and think the kids will like that.
Need to get researching!
And this is for the add-ons: https://shield.nvidia.com/blog/install-kodi-add-ons
Unfortunatelly, didn't see this http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/paypal-refund-return-shipping-costs-2426613 till today, so no good for me.
Can't fault scan though.
SPMC + Rapier skin is extremely slick, no SMB issues. A few juddering issues with pass through I need to iron out.
Any idea why "Need for Speed Most Wanted" doesn't appear in the Play Store/Nvidia Store? I got this for 10p so wanted to try it on this, but no sign of it anywhere.
can the experienced users let me know regarding this.
cheers.
