Heed my warning. Myself and my wife took the iPhone 6 refresh deal which we were told was cancelled (Monday) we have today been sent a bill for £600 which is o2s mistake which they've said we have to pay and be refunded 14 days later or it'll show as a missed payment on our credit file. It's not worth the hassle for a cheap phone.

Unlock came through this morning. All sorted now. Just waiting on revised final bill. I better not cancel the direct debit otherwise the first bill will be rejected - Don't want credit rating affected for failing to pay a credit agreement on time.

I'd say cancel the direct debit, too. O2 have a habit of handing out a hefty, surprise bill. While they are quick to rectify the issue, you don't want that hassle.
The unlock for me, if I recall, was within 48 hours.

I'm thinking of purchasing a phone via O2 Refresh and just wanted to check I understand it right. You order it, when it arrives put in a '3' sim card (so it doesn't lock to a network), then phone and cancel the airtime contract and pay off the device ? - Is that it ?
I see there is an option when ordering to pay the device upfront (at the same price) rather than having to phone up and pay it off when cancelling - Is there any benefit either way ?

Came here to post the exact same!
I received a bill yesterday for £200+ AND they had debited my account £14 (airtime) AFTER I had cancelled. I called them up yesterday and they did rectify the situation, but frankly that is not satisfactory enough. They have done this too many times for it to be a "mistake". I've reported it to Ofcom and sent O2 an invoice for £200 for wasting my time and taking money out of my account outside of contract.
They said to cancel the direct debit, so I advise you do that immediately. Call them ASAP.

Great to hear. I appreciate it can feel intimidating to phone them, almost like you're breaking some sort of rule by cancelling and keeping the phone. However, this is what O2 Refresh allows for, it also helps that it's backed up by law with the 14 day cooling off period. It was never in any doubt! :-)

From my 2 separate Refresh plans' experience, you need to put the O2 sim card into the phone in order for O2 to "recognise" it on their network. I am thinking the same as well for my very 1st refresh plan but after trial and error, I have my O2 sim activated (e.g. make a few minutes call from your O2 sim card or send a few texts) and leave it for at least 48 hours. After that, the quickest way is to ask O2 twitter team (via private message) to unlock your phone.

I think you have to use the sim in the phone for it to be registered on their network

I've just called and they told me I had to give 30 days notice too. I then went straight on chat and turns out if you ask them to move you to a pay & go sim instead you don't have to give notice and they'll cancel your airtime in a couple of days time to give the SIM card time to arrive. Maybe not quite as straight forward as it has been for other people but i'll receive a final bill within 14 days and will only be charged for 4 days of the airtime. I really was not in the mood to argue with the person on the phone so this for me is a good alternative.

I received the phone yesterday, phoned up 202 immediately using the iPhone with the O2 sim. Within 7 minutes my airtime contract was cancelled and the phone paid off.
However, my phone hadn't "latched" to O2 (no device details in My O2,). My first attempt to unlock failed, and was told to wait 24-48 hours. 24 hours later (today) I popped in to the live chat, and was assured my phone had "latched" and would be unlocked within 72 hours. Just 2 hours later, I received an e-mail saying it had been fully unlocked; and it had been! Success!
Aside, I was charge 3 days airtime which came to £1.50, I couldn't be bothered to argue with that sum of money and let it be.
When you get the phone, make a call, send a few texts and use a small amount of data. Leave the phone on.
Wait 24 hours.
Call O2 and cancel the airtime, and pay off the device plan in full. (You can do this immediately, but it seems you get charged 2/3 days airtime regardless. Remember you have 14 days cooling off.)
Pop into live chat, or check your devices to unlock under your account, and request an unlock.
Unlocking can take 72 hours, but took me just 2 hours upon successful request.

26 Apr 16#66
Generally, no. They provide this "Refresh" service and have to accept this is what can and will happen. I've had it once before (must be a couple years back, now) where the guy on the end of the phone just wouldn't let it go, so I reported it to his supervisor. Sometimes you do need to be strong, because they're salepeople and it's their job to hard sell, particularly if you're leaving them.
