Star Wars The Force Awakens DVD £8 @ Morrisons

Just done my weekly shop at Morrisons and seen a big banner advertising Star Wars The Force Awakens DVD for £8.

It's a straight £8 deal from Monday 18th April and not linked to a £30 shop like Sainsburys. I'll be buying my DVD at Morrisons

I'm waiting to see what price Amazon and Tesco sell this for on Monday. The last 'blockbuster' that was released Spectre they sold that for £7 on the day of release I'm hoping because of the price war they will do the same here. If not I live 2mins away from Morrisons and will buy there if they have stock (problem is with them their stock levels on deals are usually poor!).

They've filled in all the intervening bits that they can. All the old characters are now looking really old/boring, so now they're introducing new characters, unfortunately, they are pretty bland. However, this is obviously just the start of a new series so I think I'll just wait for the 'boxed set' to come out, but if it gets any worse, I won't bother

My blu-ray arrived this morning. Big dissapointment. Not even a limited edition choose your side logo as pictured. Slightly embossed txt but no other treatment given. The blu-ray itself is dark, I could print a better slip myself. A big let down that I expect to hit the bargain bins. Sending my copy back.

What people fail to realise since they are blinded by marketing is they compare things the wrong way, a recent or new dvd will stomp the quality of a older blu ray film and to many people they couldn't tell much difference between a hd stream and a good quality dvd since all they notice it the clarity and since bit rates and such are high on the dvd they just assume it to be HD.

I even had a old crt tv which people have often mistaken to be HD because the sharpness is so great even on SD content.
ryouga
16 Apr 16 #39
Or from people who hate the latest blockbuster movie as they know they are all overhyped to the point of being at best average films but being told they are the best things ever.

The best way to compare is in a few years time who will be watching this film regularly and who would prefer to watch the original trilogy, most modern films are just CGI overload with big name actors and there to grab the publics short attention span and open pockets.

Heat added. Amazing film which ticked all the boxes for most Star Wars fans that understood making a sequel 30 years on would be a hard task but JJ pulled it off in the best and safest way without damaging the franchise. Looking forward to Rogue One now in December. Haters will hate. Thanks OP.

Amazing film? Generic star wars rehash/reboot, same as the Star Trek he did previously. Nothing of any interest, he is a director with no artistry or soul, he just chews up and spits out other peoples ideas, which is why he should stick to disposable TV shows. What's next, 'Back to the Future: Again!'

He is an action-movie director, and not a great one. He needs to stick to that.

In

In what way? Are people really lacking the brightness to understand its all about the original source material and compression than outright resolution and the vast majority of people know nothing but act like they know everything about things like this, 20 years ago I was using RGB scart when people were barely using composite if not RF and acting like theres no improvement, even a few years ago people were using composite on HD tvs and acting like its automatically so much better than a good quality CRT through RGB scart or component just because its a HDtv.

Put a good encoded recent movie dvd alongside a old movie with a bad transfer and tell me if you notice much of a difference in PQ.

The point being is that people most of the time go for a low quality streaming version of a HD movie then act like its miles above anything SD by default not realising they have a heavily compressed version.

And so often I have seen people assume something to automatically be HD when actually watching a SD feed, or even thinking something is SD watching a HD feed as the quality is low its all about presentation.

So a modern movie would look excellent even on dvd, excellent on a hd stream and excellent on a blu ray.

You would for the most part have to put them side to side to notice a difference and more than a few feet away would struggle.

Couple of gripes, but hey ho.

Roll on Rogue One.

I am from an age when tv's werent as common place as they are now so don't get all high and mighty. I know as much as you. Its all about the source but alot of blu rays of old films are extensively remastered which helps a bit though depends on the quality of the original source and the master. You've made alot of assumptions in your comments which don't reflect my views at all. I guess you are one of those people who think they know it all, but dont.
ryouga
17 Apr 16 #64
I don't think I know it all in the slightest, I think I am more experienced and research things hence why I mentioned people who just assume its all about resolution or use the worst type of cable.

Even remastered old films look different than a modern film due to things like colour saturation, and even a more recent film can be badly transferred (though its doubtful a big name like this would be)

I think you seem to be the one making assumptions since you have assumed I believe I know it all.

I am simply someone who gives things a chance regardless of preconceptions I own a large crt with component inputs and a large plasma with hdmi and in bedroom have a good quality led tv and a crt with hdmi (which sadly isnt as pretty as the one with component)

The general public seems to be more likely to believe what they are told by the media, even going back to crt days I could tell when someone was using composite or a rgb scart capable device set to composite and not rgb since you see wavy lines and the such.

People made the same mistakes then as people now with hdtvs, now people either use composite and just assume its hd or use hd and dont change from 480p/720p people really just get sucked in.

Just as you have people who compare a big name high quality tv to something awful like a Vestel rebadge not realising the screen plays a part.

And I see people who watch the lowest quality rips and think they are great because they are HD, and I have automatically noticed how bad they were quality wise and in many ways worse than dvd.

Its not a like for like argument, a dvd rip and blu ray rip side by side would be a clear win for hd, a master from a modern film on dvd compared to a highy compressed blu ray rip and people would struggle to see much difference, sit a few feet away and it will be even less.

I ordered my copy of Star Wars TFA three and a half months ago.
I paid full price.
It is as much as three pounds cheaper from other sellers.
It's now the day after SWTFA's release date and I STILL DON'T HAVE MY DISC!
Thanks to Amazon's shoddy customer service, I will never pre-order from them again and I would advise anybody and everybody else to do the same.

Was hoping for a bit of a price war on this one.
Have Morrison's won with £8 DVD then, Asda looks like £10, Tesco £10 and Sainsbury's £37 (well £7 but need to spend £30 first).
Any cheaper offers out there?
