Makita probably want to remove the indicator from the tools and just keep the one on the new batteries. At the moment it seems like just "THE" thing added to justify a "new" version and extra money on top when you buy the batteries. I also think it makes sense to be there, but why charge more? Will the bare tools cost less now?

I can see these falling a bit further in price soon as the 1840b and 1850b are being rolled out with newer kits. These have the battery level indicator which to be fair should have been put into these batteries years ago.

The tools I have got have battery indicators on them, how would the new batteries work with these? I'm using 5.0ah batteries at the moment.

Bare in mind, if 1 cell dies, the battery goes with it.

out of curiosity, why is this thing so big considering some mobile phones nowadays sport a 4A battery too, in a fraction of the space? Is it because of the 18v?

In a word - yes.

In more words, mobile phone battery (li-ion) has a voltage of 3.6v, so 5 cells are required to make up the 18v. Allow space for cooling, control electronics, high current connections, and a casing that allows for some heavy abuse, you soon get to the size of the tool batteries.

Is your phone battery 18v?

Note that this may not fit some older tools, read the reviews about it.... you can modify the tool to accept this battery (small bit of plastic to remove apparentlt)

Thanks, I had a good laugh. I think I've seen that comment before somewhere else and I didn't understood it until now.

I guess at the end of the day no matter what make you use, if you get the job done happy days then.
I for one I've started looking at Bosch but then ended using Makita as they had a promotion and now I like the quality. I also like Milwaukee, DeWalt and I would love to have any tools made by Festool but I cannot afford them. So whatever floats your boat ..
