Good budget speakers but the PSU is terrible on these. Prone to ground loops and buzzes/hums and low volume when plugged in. Found this when running headphones off the main speaker, also caused issues with my USB turtle beach optical headphones adapter unit I switched off the speakers.

Got these for £50 and they were well worth it.

Great sound in full 5.1 mode using a 5.1 source. Problem I found was when the source is 2.1 (like youtube for instance) the rear speakers just give you a weak echoed version of the audio track. Can be fixed if you just connect in stereo mode, but a bit awkward to keep changing connections. Also I found I'd sometimes get a annoying humming from some speakers (then again I was using extension cables so that was likely the cause). Ended up replacing them with some Philips Firestorm (CSS5235Y/12) Wireless 5.1 speakers, absolutely love them. Though they are a lot more expensive. So as long as you don't mind wires or changing connectors (or just don't care about 5.1) they're a surprisingly brilliant sound for the price.

Lmao I bought these 10 years ago and they've survived me moving home 3 times! Currently have them set up as a 2.1 for my PC. Can't possible recommend them enough, at this price no less!

Bought it from Tesco direct for 40 delivered nearly a year and a half ago. Sold half a year ago. Even for 40 they're just not worth it. The sound was too tinny, every once in a while the speakers would develop a strange fault that prevented sound from coming through normally and produced very loud distortions - these would normally self-resolve after a week being unplugged.
This is a cheap system in every sense of the word, and it is frustrating as hell. Even though it might have a warranty, is it worth your time to deal with it?
I upgraded to a proper 5.1ch system in the Logitech Z906 (147 new off Amazon - it goes on sale for 155 every few months, and I have the 5% NUS discount). If you're looking for inexpensive but not cheap quality 5.1 that's your system.
or go z506 and be ready for disappointing sound quality, recurring problems, and eventually warranty issues.

Yes, you can. But using 5.1 speakers for just having stereo sound is .. discussable at least. I'm not sure if all speakers would play, but 3 (L+R+sub) of them for sure.
I've got them - terrible woofer, sound not clear in highs. I've got decent sounds cards (2 different) and other 2.1 speakers to compare, so it's not "just mumbling".But for 40 pounds it's worth to have surround in boom-boom movies IMO.
P. S. Sorry, fogot to mention how to connect to Samsung TV  By headphones output @ TV and green mini-jack @ speakers.

Not 5.1 atleast not really.
I own these. They are well worth it at £50, so this is a very good deal. I also have the z523. the two systems are usually at the same price point but I think the z523 is the superior system. Given that the z506 has more speakers this isnt surprising. the z506 takes a stereo input and splits the left and right channels between 5 speakers. some sounds will migrate suddenly between the speakers (where they would smoothly transition on a true 5.1 system). this is most noticable with music tracks.

Really? It looks to have multiple inputs on the back on the picture on the John Lewis site? Albeit I don't recognise what the inputs are (I'm no big PC user so perhaps they're PC style outputs?)

Is it worth buying a USB sound card for a little raspberry pi or similar to make a media centre compatible with the inputs of this? Could that be a cheap 5.1 setup or am I talking rubbish?
