3monkeys ebay were quite generous with Best Offers for the original Linx 8 and Linx 10 - not sure what they will accept with this one!

Edit: cfbc says (thanks!) "I put a best offer in at £49.99 and it was accepted"

IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution
Quad-Core Intel Atom processor, 1Gb RAM, 32Gb internal storage
2.0MP front and rear cameras
Windows 10
Office Mobile Apps included (Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, Power Point Mobile, One Note)
MicroSD slot
HDMI port

No Office365 with Windows 10 tablets, sadly.

Not sure if the Leather Edition (Linx 810LTR) is slightly more - think it was only ever sold in Sainsburys?.

A while back 3monkeys accepted £90 Best Offer for a Linx 10 (1st edition) that was listed at £110. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/linx-10-tablet-offer-back-3monkeys-ebay-110-best-offer-2270457

No Office365 with Windows 10 tablets, sadly.

Cheapest I can see the 810 new at the moment is at Smyths for £79.99 http://www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/video-games-tablets/tablets/c-735/internet-tablets/p-15191/linx-810-8-32gb-tablet (dependent on whether it's in your local store). Or £99.99 at Currys/PC World.

Note this is the Leather Edition, so it won't have the smooth backing in the pictures below but it's identical otherwise. Pictures of the Leather Edition in Post #2.

got one of these and it totally died within 3 months, and I mean died. Battery perhaps? No idea. took it back to retailer who exchanged it for a new one. 3 months later, its groundhog day. Gave it up as a bad job and got a refund.

Seen excellent reviews for it and when it did work it was a nice piece of kit

These tablet aren't the best in the world, but they do a good job surfing the net, working on documents on the go and Kodi works great on them! I do prefer the smooth back (the one I have!)

Battery life is crap, take an age to charge and Windows 10 on a tablet just is not particularly an enjoyable experience imo...despite how Microsoft have designed it to work in both tablet or desktop mode, tablet mode on Windows 10 OS just does not work as well as android or iOS solely designed for mobile use. Got mine for £30 when Sainsbury had the sell off got increased discount due to the one I received being an ex-display model, pretty much just to see what Windows was like as a in tablet form...cannot say I am impressed.

As for this, it is a really bad description from Linx, should be 'leather look' Hard plastic back with fake stitching...not really a nice look.

Opinions will always differ I suppose. Whilst we do not have this model, we do have a Linx 7 and a 1010B, both are well made machines and compare favourably with our Apple iPad minis. We find the battery life on the 1010 to be very good, and that of the 7" model about the same as the iPads. In many ways the Linx machines are much better than iPads: they have USB ports (full size on the 1010B), HDMI ports and the memory is easily (and very cheaply) expandable via SD cards. I don't know much about Android on tablets (we only have it on my son's cell phone, for which it seems to be a good solution), so I can't really comment on that OS, but we find Windows 10 to be comparable in most ways to IOS. Windows 10 and IOS each have their advantages and demerits, the Apple solution's biggest advantage is access to a huge application library, whilst Windows 10 is good because it is the same as our laptops and desktops. You pays your money and you makes your choice, but overall I would not agree there was anything wrong with Windows 10 on a tablet, it is just down to personal preference.
Linx tablets have a huge advantage over Apple (and this 8" version is included): price. Similar Apple machines are three times the price, and to be really candid they do exactly the same thing in a slightly different way. I suspect there will be some naysayers commenting that I must be wrong and that it is essential to have Apple products, and that is fine if cost (or potential for expansion and connectivity) is not an issue, but otherwise I think one would have to concede the Linx/Windows 10 solution is a much better one.
Heat added, I think this is a good deal for those in the market for a good value and fairly good quality tablet computer.

This 3monkeys listing has been slowly dropping over the last month or so - it was originally listed at £79.99 just over a month ago, then £69.99 - not sure what Best Offers they're accepting at the moment though.

I can't really comment on the 810 or 1010 as I don't have them, though I'm familiar with the Connect 7 (Linx 7 clone), Linx 8 and 10. The improved keyboard and addition of USB slots for the 810 and 1010 make them a better buy (of course). I use my Linx 10 every night, to browse a little and read ebooks via Calibre.

As for the Leather edition itself, it's a bit of a weird addition to the line up - and I prefer keeping my tablets in a case anyway.

Windows tablets advantage is for the three people that are interested at this sort of price point in turning them into fully fledged productivity machines, really that is the only advantage Microsoft have over Apple and Android. For the majority of joe public that wants a cheap tablet they would not want it for productivity. Caveat at this price point is performance, will low processing power and paltry memory and lack of real estate with screen size over something like the 1010B.

If you find battery life fine on the Linx 7 and 1010B model is there something wrong with my Linx 8?...at a pitiful 4-5 hours and taking around the same time to charge (utilising a 2a charger) I would not say that it is great.
othen
21 Apr 16 #15
I'm not sure I follow: which three people (have I missed something in your meaning I wonder)?
I can't comment on the battery life of the 8" tablet because we don't own one. My son finds the battery life on the Linx 7 about the same as his iPad mini when watching continuous You Tube videos about Minecraft and GTA 5 (as young people do). Maybe it is not so good on the 8" version, I don't know.
cicobuff
21 Apr 16 #16
My meaning there is Microsoft are attempting to appeal to a small market especially buying a budget tablet, whereby the majority of people want a differential in tablets to laptops rather than something to replace them....i.e media consumption and browsing rather than a focus on productivity..which iOS and Android is geared towards.
othen
21 Apr 16 #17
Last comment before moving on: if by productivity you mean someone might try to use a Linx 7 or 8 as an office machine, then I don't think anyone would seriously try that (although having a free copy of Excel is handy for spreadsheets I might write on a laptop or desktop). In our experience Linx machines (albeit not this 8" model) are every bit as good at media consumption and browsing as are Apple tablets (better at media consumption because the memory can be increased easily).
I hope that is useful to potential buyers, now I have other things to do.

Well therein lies the problem then doesn't it....because that is exactly what Windows 10 by design as an OS on a tablet is outlined to do [here]

And in my experience whilst they are fine with media consumption (albeit low quality screens) and fine for browsing the whole Windows interface is nowhere near as practically or logically designed for tablet usage. The Linx 8/810 has poor battery life, and slow charging.

And this review [here] mirrors my experience with battery life, as well as stating you would be better off with an android tablet for media consumption...who wants endless KB updates, we have enough of that in our daily lives using PCs.

I looked at this tablet around Christmas but ended up getting its big brother, the linx vision 8. Main thing that pushed the decision was memory as I think the minimum ram should be 2GB for running 10. 1GB is really limiting in terms of performance.
louiselouise
21 Apr 16 #20
Surprised the Linx Vision's price hasn't dipped more by now. It's £129.99 new from ebuyer currently http://www.ebuyer.com/729155-linx-vision-gaming-wifi-32gb-tablet-black-vision001

and £114.99 from Argos ebay refurbished http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361527040051 though I'd say Amazon Warehouse is usually a better bet price-wise if you want a refurb.

Not sure how much of a performance improvement the Cherry Trails are, really. There were lots of complaints about overheating in the early days (not with this particular tablet, though afaik).

I've seen a few mentions for http://www.watchcount.com/ saying that it will display the Best Offer price - can't see anything there yet though! (This item number is 371570863616). Tried Goofbid/Tamebay Best Offer tool and no luck.

This page might be worth keeping an eye on, though http://www.watchcount.com/completed.php?bkw=linx&bcat=0&bcts=&sfsb=Show+Me!&csbin=boa&cssrt=ts&bfw=1&bslr=3monkeys&bnp=&bxp=#serp (need to change the page to search for "UK", Seller: 3monkeys, Buy It Now, Search Keyword: linx).

Didn't have much luck doing the "print page" workaround either.

Edit: The Tamebay page I'm looking at says (so far) Offers Accepted: 33.63% Total Offers: 898 Average Reduction: 15.17% - though Best Offers can vary wildly depending on the item/original price.

No problems. Was going to go lower, but looking at the ebay listing, you can see a lot of "pending" and thought a tenner off ain't bad. I didn't think they would accept it to be honest.

Linx 8 charges quite slowly (the original one that OP posted a while back), and does struggle a bit on Win 10 with the 1gb RAM. However, it does generally do the job for light browsing, and makes a pretty decent 'Kindle'!

Did you hear that whoosh! sound?...it's because it's the Linx Leather Edition:innocent:
soza
21 Apr 16 #31
I've not experienced that at all.

https://i.imgur.com/qvFHcml.png

• Chrome has 4 tabs open and 2 active extensions (uBlock Origin and HTTPS Everywhere)
• Candy Crush Saga is running in the background
• The Windows 10 messaging app is in use

If it still looks like a lot of memory is being used then you need to understand that Windows now keeps applications in RAM for longer and it uses compression to make it more efficient. It'll then offload anything that's too large to the paging file, but if your eMMC is fast enough then you shouldn't notice any slowdown. And keep in mind that eMMC is typically much faster than a traditional hard drive.

I don't know if the eMMC is different in this leather edition than the original version that I'm using, so your mileage may vary.

The only issue I've found with Windows 8+ on 7 and 8" tablets is that you can tell that Windows wasn't optimized for these screen sizes. Like you might find that you need to increase the scaling level so that things like the file manager work well, but when you do that UI elements can look poor IMO.

For any linxtablet.co.uk members, there's a new thread asking what we'd be looking for in the new generation of tablets. http://www.linxtablet.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1946

Of interest to me, and maybe other owners, because the Chinese tablets are better specced and cheaper, but, of course, you don't get the warranty and aftersales the UK offers.

Edit: Here's what I said, if anyone's interested! :innocent:

Linxtablets.co.uk are also asking if we would like to see a different design and/or software included.

Hi cfbc, the linxtablet.co.uk forum is a great resource - hopefully some of these forum threads will help.

http://www.linxtablet.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=1315

Copy/pasted a few suggestions:

"try setting the wifi adapter on the tablet to b/g only, not b/g/n."

"I checked the "Power & sleep" settings and the "....stay connected to WiFi while asleep" options were already ticked for both plugged-in and battery option, but they don't seem to work. Could be a Windows 10 or a Realtek RTL8723BS hardware or driver issue - if it's software, hopefully a fix will be available eventually.
..made the obvious workaround by modifying "Power & sleep" settings "...PC goes to sleep after" to "Never" for both plugged-in and battery operation and the problem no longer shows itself. Not an ideal solution though."

Try updating the drivers via Device Manager is another suggestion.

"another member on here suggested that turning off WPS on his router cured his WiFi problems. IIRC his 1010 worked perfectly at work (No WPS) but had conductivity issues at home (WPS)."

"...after a few restarts and shutdowns, the system appears to be fully functional without any noticeable Wi-Fi issues from 'sleep' mode to long term usage as far as I can tell *touch wood*.
..Advice for anyone with similar issues: Try downgrading the driver to 3007.5.815.2014 BUT you must give the device time to stabilise to the new driver *apparently*."

http://www.linxtablet.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=1744 (suggesting it could be a Windows 10 issue).

Thank you so much. Funny enough I actually fixed it last night after spending a lot of time on the internet, the Linx Forum and lots of bogus information pages.

It seems to be a common fault on not only the 8" tablet and as you have stated a W's 10 issue. I followed this and it has fixed the issue:

"Just couple of things might help you, that I think fixed my WiFi issues:

WiFi driver advanced settings
- Wireless Mode - turn on b/g
- Multi-Channel Concurrent - Enabled

System, Power & Sleep
- Untick both WiFi connected while asleep settings

WiFi Properties
- Untick ipv6

+ reboot
"

If anyone comes across this issue, hopefully they can now resolve it as it initially did my head in for a few nights!

Thanks again for your post and also suggestions
