I was really excited about this phone but everything I thought was going to be good has proved just average or poor. Camera mean to be great but actually only OK. Build quality actually very poor. The B and O DAC not really being much better then the phone one (this is a strong point tbf) because of software limitations. In short I can't see why anyone would buy this over a HTC 10, S7/edge or iPhone 6S. Even the removable battery is on 2800mah for a high resolution display. The only was I would buy this is if all of the friends were included but at moment we get headphones where American carriers have been giving away the camera or the B and O DAC! I'll vote hot because it is a good deal (point of this site) but the G5 is freezing cold for me and that's from someone who liked look of it! Plus that Andorid skin...oh my god!

The camera is on a rough par with the S7, and it's definitely much better than phone cameras from 2-2.5 years ago. It's also supposed to be at least as good as the G4 camera - is that seriously only "OK" nowadays? There's only so much you can do in a smartphone, you "cannae change the laws of physics" There's still plenty that can be done, I just temper my expectations of what a mobile phone can do, and frankly nowadays most flagships have pretty good cameras.

I'm not sure what the B&O DAC can genuinely bring to the table in all honest; most built-in DACs today are perfectly decent and besides that, it's a mobile phone that you'll often use for playing music when you're out and about, not sitting in a quiet environment listening to music critically. If you have high impedance 'phones then you should probably be using an external DAC with its own battery anyway.

You can change the launcher/theme whenever you want, and to be honest LG's latest iteration isn't the worst thing out there anyway - although I did change mine to Nova pretty much straight away. But the point is that you can easily do something like that and make it suit you.

I may be wearing different glasses from you, because for me the G5 is a better choice than the S7 or the M10 for a few reasons; there's no "absolute best" phone, there is however "the best phone for you". Had the V10 been easily available, I would probably have chosen that instead.

No it's not a brilliant design, but at least they did something different - I'm bored of all the "oh look, we've put in a new CPU, more pixels and some extra case design tweaks" handsets that have been coming out lately, the market needs something genuinely different, so well done LG and keep working on it!

Just checked. You are correct. Unlimited Data which is a 2 month data test drive. I thought Vodaphone had made a mistake

Yeah I take your point regarding the call plan that's included. I was more looking at it from my perspective without thinking. I have a SIM paid for by work, and a phone for that matter, but its crap! So I like to buy my own phone, so for me my statement stands, but I understand your perspective if you want a like for like tariff.

I got this for £29 with Vodaphone. Similar deal but the only difference is Unlimited Data, Texts and 1000 Mins. I really like the phone. Nice aluminium case, modular in design, SD card slot, 4GB RAM (My gaming PC only has :sunglasses:, pretty good camera that can take photos in RAW format, 24 bit audio. I am happy with it.

It isn't a bad phone, but its only gimmick doesn't really count for me. The build quality issues with the parts not lining up seems quite wide spread and with a slightly smaller battery, a dimmer screen and nothing else going for it I just can't see why you would go for this over the 10, S7, 6P or Z5 Premium in all honesty.

I can't think of a single thing in brings in over them and can think of a few negatives.

A disingenious comparison. You can get VERY competitive 30 day rolling SIM Only deals these days. With this deal you are held captive for 2 flipping years. There's a massive difference right there. Plus you know you are going to get the dreaded yearly increase and nowt you can do about it. Buy outright and SIM Only really is the way forward. Contracts are just propping up the ridiculous prices UK mobile suppliers charge for flagships. You only have top look at the usual Chinese suspects like Xiaoimi, Meizu to see how much you are being ripped off in the UK.

If you sit down and do the maths, there's not a crazy amount of different between a deal like this, and buying the £150 phone, and getting a sim only contract...

Cost of Redmi note 3 - £150
Sim only deal on EE - £18(ish)

Over 24 months, you'll have paid £582.

If you take this deal, £719 at the end of 24 months.
Now you sell both phones after the 24 months, you'll probably get £50 for the Chinese phone, g5 would still fetch £150(ish)..., deduct that from the totals...

Totals
LG5 deal £569
Redmi Note 3 deal £482.

Take into consideration warranty, issues you may have the phone that you can return/repair etc... If your redmi note 3 has a problem, what do you do!?...

If you are happy with bigger phone you can't really go wring with the S7 edge (main reason to choose over S7 is the large battery). I like the look of HTC but think battery is a bit too small, I also like that it has enabled adaptive storage for SD cards and mostly stock android apps. The Nexus 6P is a really good phone too and stock android is the best in my opinion. I'm currently using the 5X which is a nicer smaller phone but battery is poor if heavy user and it is a plastic build. I also have a OnePlus 2 that I really like in terms of OS (some actual improvements on stock!) and hardware. The new OnePlus 3 might be out at anytime soon and will have flagship specs but cheap (bar maybe a 1080p screen but I'd prefer that and a massive battery then quad HD!) Both iPhone 6S and 6S+ good as is the new smaller SE. If I was going to name 1 it would be the S7E despite touchwiz or the iPhone 6S now the prices are more realistic then at launch. The others I have mentioned are all good too though!

I've just bought the redmi note 3 pro prime for my wife and its a beast of a phone for only £150, its incredible. I cannot see the point in spending upwards of £700 for a phone unless you're after a phenomenal camera built in.

26 Apr 16 #39
Spot on.. I feel the same. The G5 just doesn't feel special enough and some of the quirky features have gone I. E rear buttons etc. I've had the G2/G3 and I was thinking of the G5 but it would seem that the best phone in the LG range is the G4. I bit the bullet and went back to Samsung with a S6 edge.... Great phone and slightly smaller than the S7edge which I'm happy with. Voted hot as a good deal for a recent flagship phone.

Heat added, great price for this phone.

As for the phone, I have one and find both performance and battery life great. Camera is fantastic - even has option to save in RAW. Using the wide angle lens way more than I thought I would. First android device I've used that doesn't lag. Build quality is fine (mine's in a case anyway) and I like that I can replace the battery in future if necessary.

S7 is a more polished product in terms of hardware, but show me a deal this cheap on the S7.

There's also surprisingly little bloatware installed on my EE G5. Just one virus scanner app that I disabled. Everything else is stock LG. Running Nova Launcher on mine, but stock launcher isn't as bad as people say.

Hi, the cost of the handset is £109.99. (without the code)
When you use the code in the op, it removes the cost of the handset, which means you now have no upfront cost.

LG G5 is great idea with poor execution. I definitely believe this was due to the fact that they rushed the manufacturing process. It should've been released during may to allow more time. The phone is still very good. The still camera is on par or better than the GS7 (IMO the G5 still camera is better and it also has the wide angle lens which is awesome) but the video is a little better on the GS7 since it has implemented the OIS very well. The one thing that annoys me about the video mode on the G5 is that why did LG not include the manual mode from the V10. It doesn't make sense why you wouldn't continue to upgrade features that no other flagship has and if the G5 had this it would be better for video. The processor are good on both phones and are mainly similar with Samsung (Exynos) being a little faster opening games and the G5(SD820) a little faster browsing. Differences are highly unnoticeable unless you compare side by side. Audio quality is a ton better on the G5 than the GS7 mainly due to the GS7 being waterproof. Both have Micro sd card slots. The screen is brighter on the GS7 since its Amoled but also over saturated whereas Ips lcd is accurate but dimmer. The display is more pleasing on the S7 overall. The battery life is a little better on the S7 since its bigger but the G5 not only has a removable battery but also has quick charge 3.0 which charges to 80% within 30 minutes. So in my opinion this is a massive win for the G5. The build quality and feel is better on the S7 without a doubt. At the end of the day everyone is going to put a case on the phone anyway so it doesn't matter too much. The software really depends on the user. This can easily be changed by installing a launcher. For the people complaining about no app drawer, the new LG update will include it for the G5 but until then you can get the G4 UX from the LG store. The last feature is that the G5 has is the only flagship phone with modularity. Its really good that LG did something new. The only problem is are we going to get any more modules ? So much potential but it depends on whether LG will bother enough to make some other modules. Overall, both phones are great and you really cant go wrong with either. LG had the chance to takeover instead of staying on par with samsung but they screwed it.

LG had a great idea with the modular element but its been poorly executed (perhaps rushed?) resulting in a less than satisfactory build quality.

Good deal, but I'll be sticking with my G4. It's a perfectly capable phone with better audio and the same camera as the G5. I've had the G2, G3, G4 but if I was looking to upgrade I'd be choosing the S7 edge.

Head added as it is a good phone and this is a good deal if you want a G5 BUT...

I got the G5 pre-release deal with audio bundle on EE and ended up cancelling & returning it as I couldn't justify spending £1000 on a phone (£39.99pm +RPI increase) when you can get very decent phones for £100ish now and similar allowance sim only deals for around £10pm so I'll be saving £650-£700ish over 2 years once I decide which to go for as there are so many great deals around at the moment. so many moaners on here. Just consider that the G5 is significantly cheaper than the S7 and S7 Edge on contract and PAYG.

I had the S7 Edge for a few days - bought it with Cex vouchers but couldn't get on with it. the G5 on the other hand is quite a likeable little phone - it takes great quality photos, offers a wide angle camera for great creativity (particularly good for group photos and landscapes), has a lovely screen, much better loudspeaker than the S7E, charges quicker than the S7 with a QC 3 adaptor and runs a much smoother version of Android than Touchwiz: there is very little duplication and they've taken out a lot of the multitasking features from the G4 - I assume in preparation for Android N

This device might not be for everyone but I think in time some of the doubters might come to like it.

I owned the g3 and it was a good phone but battery life sucked. it badly needed doze and marshmallow and LG never updated it. I had to flash it and tbh the Bluetooth went awful. I decided to get the Nexus 6p and it is far better and of course will keep getting updated. LG despite their boasts never update a previous flagship more than once and no security updates. I wouldn't get another LG phone ever.

How does this compare to the G4? I was a long time G2 fan but missed the expandable storage and removable battery. I skipped the G3 but the G4 is epic. I think we've reached the point where most former flagships are still good enough. Until my G4 breaks I'll be hard pushed to ever upgrade again.

G2 owner here as well - great phone, great battery life even 3 years down the road!!

In terms of the G5...I disagree with you guys. The DAC is great for audiophiles (and the difference in sounds quality is evident - tested by myself using a pair of DENON HP600's; also see the WhatHifi review of the phone).

The camera is on par with the Galaxy S7 (see the GSM Arena review) and better than the iPhone 6S (which was worse than the flagship Android's even when it was launched...). I personally did not test the camera on the G5 but this comes from reviews by people who actually review phones/cameras for a living - I tend to trust their opinion.

This is a great deal for the G5!

Have iphone 6 not s6. Bought g5 for my wife. Even if I'm android fan still Iphone is better. We were restricted to android for her because of apps we could not find on IOass. Besides the wide angle camera there is no unique selling point TBH. I was expecting much better results from camera on Auto. But it post processes so much that you can see the smudging. If I were her would return it and get a iphone 6 64gb at the same pricepoint now. Will test thoroughly the sgs7edge to see the camera on auto.
Darn Iphone. Still hard to beat.

I was thinking just this. They had a beautiful working formula for the G2. I was definitely rooting for G5 to come out but as a lot of people have said, it's not as overwhelmingly great as it first seemed (I'd still personally take it over S7 and HTC though).
I just really hope the may a V10 successor which has the always on display (instead of the 2.1 inch one) and with a S820 in it + upgraded screen. That would be a dream come true, I would actually pay the full RRP for a phone like that.

I totally agree with you tranceazure. Take a G2, put the G4 screen in, make the back power button the FP reader, upgrade the Camera, add SD slot & removable battery, swap out SD800 for 820. You've got a great G5. No need for a bigger phone, (G3/G4,) no need for awful look and bezels, (Current G5.)

G2 is so good, I'm still using mine.

It's like a parallel HUKD or the one I remember from years ago (I used the site for probably 2 years before registering) where people can disagree on the product but agree it is good value and also form constructive arguments on why they do or don't like the product! If only every thread was like this!

I would've been amazed if they'd done what they did, plus waterproofing, plus stunning build quality, plus bigger battery, etc - it'd just be too much for one iteration really, even Apple can't pull off that kind of leap. Hopefully future versions will keep going!

why did you pick the worst reviewers on the internet to quote :-) check out any other decent review site. You can tell they are speaking rubbish straight away as hardware wise in terms of CPU, RAM, screen resolution etc G5 and 10 nearly identical yet one (LG G5) is 2800mah and HTC is 3000mah with less bloat. Even with software optimisations I find it hard to believe that the G5 will consistently last longer then the HTC!

Agree totally that the new dual camera idea is really nice but the reviews outside of DXmark have generally said not as good as S7 and 6S, probably about the same if not slightly less good then HTC outside of the wide angle feature which is really good. I am glad you're happy with your purchase. It is just mainly I had really high hopes that have been let down by a fair few flagships but this especially. Currently swapping between iPhone 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 and OnePlus 2. All of these had good and bad points but none of the flagships have enough to make me upgrade. If the S7 Edge had stereo speakers it would probably be my choice and first Samsung in years. now for the first time in ages as touchwiz is finally not so bad. Really like how HTC have worked with Google on creating a phone without loads of bloat and with mixture of stock android apps and their own but think battery will let it down plus would have liked to see waterproofing. You are right...maybe I'm being a bit harsh on the G5 but it is because it promised so much!

"Should you get it?
Because it falls in the same price range as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the LG G5, I expected the HTC 10 to deliver the same sort of performance as its fellow Android competitors. While I give it major props for its superb audio quality (seriously, I've never nodded my head to music being played by a phone as strongly as when I was using HTC BoomSound) and handsome good looks, I hesitate to recommend it as anyone's top choice.

For the same price you can get the Galaxy S7, which is also beautifully designed and water resistant. There's also the G5, which beats the 10 in battery life (plus you can replace the battery with its unique modular design if need be).

And while the Google Nexus 6P didn't edge out the 10 in our benchmark tests, it costs about $100 less, has a comparable battery life and gets software updates from Google as soon as they're available.

The mobile landscape is as cutthroat as they come. Despite the HTC 10 being a solid device, it simply doesn't have enough to carry it over the top. So unless you're a diehard music lover, skip the 10 for something better."

I always prefer to have a hands on but in general i think the G4 had good reviews but the design polarised opinions. It also has a very good screen to bezel ratio. I don't own it so better off checking the reviews out which have generally said it is a good phone but can't hold up against S7 and iPhone 6S or the new HTC.

Price & no upfront fee for handset V an iBone.. brilliant!

Actual LG G5 handset.. pure toot with design from the 80's ;-(

Lets hope they pull out all the stops on the LG G6 as the LG G4 is still
the handset to own and with latest Marshmallow on it, smooth as silk!

If you are going to dump this much dosh on a bit of kit, choose the S7E
or even the HTC 10, which unusually for HTC is a blinder of a smartphone..

Only an opinion, so no need for the iBone gang to start flaming the thread or
take me round the back of the bike sheds to duff me up ;-)
