I got the instructions within 24 hours. you are given two codes, the first one (2945#*850#) gets you to a menu. I was told to select SERVICE PROVIDER UNLOCK, which gets you nowhere as it says that YOUR PHONE IS NOT PERSONALISED and prompts you to DISMISS and go back to the menu. Does anyone know whether it's OK to pay off the phone and get it unlocked before the Camera thing is despatched. I would keep the air contract open a while yet. EDIT - I asked online chat and they said yes it was OK to pay off the device and unlock it as long as the air contract was untouched. O2 also kindly offered me £62 for my M8 the battery of which is almost unuseable (and it's well nigh impossible to get a new battery in the UK).

Just got one and thanks for the nudge to get me to go to O2 - it's a great deal as I rather wanted the camera thingy anyhow so it cost not so much more than 300 pounds net. I am delighted with G5 - I like the colours of the screen vs the rather gareish AMOLEDS of the Nexus 6P and the Samsung, the camera is terrific and the ultra wide angle a very useful feature. I think much has been made of the modular aspect being a bit of a gimmick but swopping a dud battery is no gimmick whatsoever. USB C rocks too....

I am still in my first 14 days and I haven't cancelled the line rental of the contract yet but if I do it now would it still mean I can get the camera grip? It comes with a leaflet saying you need to wait for 14 days and then fill out a form on the web to get the free camera grip. If I cancel line rental contract now would it affect my entitlement to the free camera grip?
This also means I can keep paying for the phone @ £13/month instead of finishing off phone contract early as this simply spreads the cost. O2 customer support confirmed my phone is unlocked but I haven't checked it yet as my nano sim is on its way from 3. Will know Monday or max Tuesday. If unlocked I don't think paying phone contract off is a good idea.

I had Oppo Find 7 which broke 2 weeks back and I went through all latest phones and decided to get this. I have got it through this deal and I like LG G5 very much. Yes there are tiny flaws with the design and rough edges, screen is very slightly dim compared to few other phones I checked but not a deal breaker given next version up (Galaxy S7) will be £90+ more which I am not prepared to spend. Love wide angle camera too. I don't have bottom of phone gap issue, and given it will spend most of its life tucked inside a case it won't be a problem, atleast not worth extra £90.
If I find any better price for this phone (in next 1.5 weeks) I am going to return it to O2 and get the cheaper one.

tbh the only thing wrong with this phone is it is subjectively ugly, feels like plastic because of the primer over the metal body and quality control issues regarding the build. Some have it some don't, but there is a major issue with the bottom being misaligned etc. LG can do better with the display as well, it is quite dim.
Still, it has two fantastic cameras, audio quality (headphone jack) is pretty good. The UI is subjectively ugly, it is as thick as Touchwiz but yet, it is smoother. The LG "Friends" are a bit expensive tbh. The only thing worthwhile here, subjectively again is the removable battery.

Well two days since unlock, and the signal on Three with teh G5 is FAR BETTER than both my G3 and G4 were Other callers say my voice is really clear and easy to hear.
I use Lucid Launcher so the UI doesn't bother me anyway, but in all honesty the new UI is base on what Android N will be like anyway - so everyone can moan then!
The phone charges really fast, battery lasts all day, and the screen is nice and bright. The processor handles everything I have thrown at it so far without any hesitation at all. So far I am very happy indeed compared to paying £600 for a very similar spec phone with no expansion or removable battery.

It's great you're happy with your phone, but what you're ranting about seems to have come from your head rather than this thread. Aside from the odd comment, most of the discussion has been pretty fair from what I can see. Certainly can't see a huge amount of 'opinions' being thrown around as facts by 'Samsung fans'.
As for 'negativity' to LG, honestly just get over it. Of course people will be negative if there's reason to be negative. These are giant corporations churning out phones, not your children. Don't be so precious. If I was going to buy a phone or upgrade my current G model, I'd much rather read the worst I could read and then make an informed decision, rather than a load of purely positive stuff.

Some of the negativity towards LG on this site is quite surprising...
Opinions from Samsung fans being thrown around as facts.
I took up this deal in store on Friday, and will keep the phone with o2 for 2 weeks for the CamPlus before cancelling the airtime and paying off the phone. And this phone is excellent. It's far superior to the G3 (one of LG's most highly regarded phones). I've no issue with my units build quality, the camera(s!) are stunning and the UI is different but simple enough to master - I like dropping apps in relevant folders on one page with widgets on additional pages, and if you want more advanced controls use Nova or similar.
Many of the components are the same as, or better, when compared to the S7 Edge. But not all, I appreciate there are some areas where this phone falls short of the Edge - I'm not here to give a purely bias rant, unlike some on this thread that have probably never even used both the units yet feel obliged to spew some crap.
Speed and response tests across YT have regularly seen the G5 quicker than the S7 Edge (with the camera this is huge point for me). Sure it's not the prettiest phone, but I'll be putting any £300+ piece of hardware in a protective case.
And all of this for under £400, whilst the S7 Edge remains £600+?
Samsung are truly the Apple of the Android world; you're getting good hardware, and they're popular, but this has forced prices right up, and you're paying a premium for it. If you want to do that, great. But keep your ill informed opinions to yourself.
/end rant.
Thanks OP.

I'm actually impressed with LG trying to be"innovative" with the modular design idea. Also a pity that the V10 was not the starting point in the UK as it sounds like they have made some quality issues with the G5. If I didn't have the excellent G4 right now I would happily **** off LG as my prior family history of LG phones gives me the opinion that they are expensive paper weights. I hope they get it right and keep giving us the exchangeable battery, sd card access, camera modifications...and I would quite happily accept a module that could cook me some bacon in the morning...how can they not have done this already...and no one had mentioned this absence in any reviews!

14 Apr 16#50
I've got mine today - it feels just fine - in fact works MUCH quicker than my partners iPh6+ ... don't see what all the negativity is around this phone. Yes there's a minuscule gap between the removable bottom and case, but if it wasn't there you wouldn't be able to latch it in place! So far I am really impressed.
The only slight negatives are: curved screen edges = nightmare for a tempered glass protector & no wireless charging - due to metal case. Other than that it's a monster!

The S7e comparison is probably the wrong one, the more worrying one is the small and large makers coming out of china with excellent build quality and specs at far lower prices. From what I can see LG have positioned this as their flagship (as the G models always have been), so from that perspective it's below par imo. You're right though that when everything goes in a case it doesn't make too much difference. I have an S6e and it needs a case just to be comfortable to use!

14 Apr 16#48
I have had a look at those and compared them to my handset. So I have a small gap that fits the very thin paper from the G5 manual in it about 4-5 mm, this is on the side with the release latch. The other side has no gap.
The back is completely smooth, no extra bumps and lumps, so I can only assume that was due to a manufacturing problem.
The screen as I mentioned previously does indeed have some backlight bleeding in a pitch black room, though that is not uncommon with IPS displays sadly.
I do think people need to stop comparing it to the S7 Edge and the V10 though, there is a significant price difference between the G5 and those phones, I would expect to be getting more for my money. With the G5 you are paying for top end tech internally while taking a small hit on the external looks. If that is not acceptable to you then in reality you have to spend the extra for the S7 Edge.
From my perspective the phone will spend the vast majority of its life in a tough case so a small paper thin gap at one side is not going to affect me. The backlight bleed on the other hand might.

14 Apr 16#47
Thank you for that. Looks like there are some variations between the models that people review, like the mobiletechreview had gaps all around, whereas ars technica had gaps on only one side. The other video had faults to the entire back of the phone.
Hopefully as time passes the production models will iron out the flaws......hopefully. The primer on the mobiletechreview one looked really poorly finished for a flagship.

14 Apr 16#46
it's a good phone for price when compared to S7. However the quality difference is very evident between the 2. The UI is pretty poor seems to be designed by a child. Handset will drop price very quickly to compete with S7 and HTC flagship phones.
Also O2 unlock the handset within 48hrs once sim used to make call, don't need to wait 14 days as stated by someone here. I've unlocked ally handsets, including S7 Edge within 48hrs of request which is excellent.

This digg link http://digg.com/2016/lg-g5-reviews-modules which summarises reviews kind of sums it up, but just have a look on youtube. I've seen at least three unboxings/reviews from highly trusted reviewers who have received units with defective screens, big gaps by the module, lumps and bumps in the finish, antenna lines visible. Seems they just haven't been able to perfect the fit on this, nor the treatment to bury the antenna lines.
I agree the screen is not great. They really should have gone for an AMOLED instead of IPS.
But I haven't seen any of these build problems. I have a mate that got one and has had no problems.
Where are all these build problems?? Can someone please provide a link. All the reviews I've read from reputable sources indicate improved build quality.

I really wanted to like this as I need to upgrade.
the demo unit in the phone shop doesn't turn on! it starts, but the battery module has a large gap and does not sit flush in the device. It sticks out and if you push it in it just comes back, like its on a spring.
real shame as would be nice for a novel new idea to take off for once. (can't imagine any new modules coming out that would be practical or useful)
HottyHotty
14 Apr 16#40
Has had poor reviews across the board. Some of the units that reviewers have bought (ie retail units) are frankly embarassing. Lumps and bumps, gaps wide enough to slide a piece of paper into. Add to that even the screen is apparently poor compared to the competition, notwithstanding the issues on some with backlight bleed all over the shop.
If I had to guess this won't be the start of a whole series of phones that take modules, will be the first and only experiment. LG should have worked off the V10 imo, instead they've created a bit of a dogs dinner!

My G4 (4 months old) decided to reboot itself and die. The only thing it was good for was starting a bush fire after that... press power button, wait 5 minutes, drop it like it's hot (as it heated up to become hotter than the fing sun).
With Vodafone for repair now, but that's the first problem I've had of that severity in 15 years of phone ownership. Big problem with the G4 if you search Google, mine was Dec 2015 build date.

Whatever you do if you have a fault avoid LG for support and go to your retailer. My G3 went back and forward to LG with a fualty motherboard and case. I was without a phone for 4 months! Pathetic.

14 Apr 16#34
I also had a faulty motherboard and sent it to O2 first. Those **** wanted to charge me £124 because they thought that my screen was cracked. I obviously refused and got it back to see that it was just my glass screen protector that had a tiny crack. I suspect that they tried to mug off a potentially gullible customer, no way a qualified engineer can't see the difference between a screen protector and the phone screen.
Contacted LG and they got it repaired within 2 weeks. Maybe too long without a phone as well, but they're not too bad. Everything was straightforward with them.

Fixed battery in the HTC. One of the few reasons people still support LG is that it's one of the last big manufacturers to have this feature in a flagship phone. When it comes to software I've been reading in reviews that the HTC 10 comes with close to stock Android. Something LG has been doing for a while now so not a compelling feature. As for build quality, it's not out yet so all the first run niggles haven't been publicised.

Happy G2 owner running CloudyG2 3.3 rom and Xceed kernel. Was hoping for something great from LG to tempt me and although I've yet to see one in the flesh I'm not that much in a hurry to try one. So I got mine today after ordering last week, not sure if mine is a second production run as they had to wait for new stock before mine came in.
However build quality seems fine to me, the module part matches up perfectly on mine, there are no imperfections on the back. Screen is very nice as is the camera, though I am upgrading from a Nexus 4 so... anything is going to be an improvement these days). Tiny niggle on mine would be a very small amount of back-light bleed at the top edge on full brightness on a black screen, however I have to almost squint to see it (in a pitch black room) and its not noticeable in general use. I only checked it because it was mentioned in reviews.
I would not expect the build quality to be better than the S7 Edge considering that is over £100 more even with discounts.

This phone IMO is a bit of a disappointment when it comes to the build quality, held one in carphone warehouse the other day and it felt poor vs the Galaxy S7 edge, also the modular part didn't join the phone very well and the back of the phone had imperfections in it,all of these issues I've since seen on YouTube videos, which indicates this is a widespread problem.

This is a nice phone. I waited to get my hands on one before I made my new phone choice recently - I ended up getting the S7 Edge in the end as the screen was a lot more vibrant and slightly bigger despite being similar spec. I had the G3 before and had been happy for a couple of years so naturally wanted to see the G5. Admittedly getting a free VR and 128gb card swung my deal towards the S7 it but from what I saw - this is still a top phone. Hot for the deal!

These guys seem pretty happy with the general build Android Pit.
Modular system seems like a nice touch, especially the removable battery.
Not entirely sure what you mean by diminishing hardware upgrades?
If you mean internal CPU, then its not a massive jump from the s808 but it is the latest and greatest going around now but I do see what you mean in that its a lot of money to fork out for an incremental improvement.
Screen, can't comment. My guess its the probably the same, don't see why they'd make it any worse (not that it's particularly terrible in the first place).

Samsung are truly the Apple of the Android world; you're getting good hardware, and they're popular, but this has forced prices right up, and you're paying a premium for it. If you want to do that, great. But keep your ill informed opinions to yourself.
/end rant.
Thanks OP.
The only slight negatives are: curved screen edges = nightmare for a tempered glass protector & no wireless charging - due to metal case. Other than that it's a monster!
Hopefully as time passes the production models will iron out the flaws......hopefully. The primer on the mobiletechreview one looked really poorly finished for a flagship.
Also O2 unlock the handset within 48hrs once sim used to make call, don't need to wait 14 days as stated by someone here. I've unlocked ally handsets, including S7 Edge within 48hrs of request which is excellent.
Sure some people might get perfect examples, but some of the retail versions seen on youtube are frankly shocking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_OvSEhnMwc (can see through the gap as she's reviewing!)
But I haven't seen any of these build problems. I have a mate that got one and has had no problems.
Where are all these build problems?? Can someone please provide a link. All the reviews I've read from reputable sources indicate improved build quality.
the demo unit in the phone shop doesn't turn on! it starts, but the battery module has a large gap and does not sit flush in the device. It sticks out and if you push it in it just comes back, like its on a spring.
real shame as would be nice for a novel new idea to take off for once. (can't imagine any new modules coming out that would be practical or useful)
If I had to guess this won't be the start of a whole series of phones that take modules, will be the first and only experiment. LG should have worked off the V10 imo, instead they've created a bit of a dogs dinner!

With Vodafone for repair now, but that's the first problem I've had of that severity in 15 years of phone ownership. Big problem with the G4 if you search Google, mine was Dec 2015 build date.
Contacted LG and they got it repaired within 2 weeks. Maybe too long without a phone as well, but they're not too bad. Everything was straightforward with them.

Strange modular system.
Diminishing hardware upgrades.
Screen might be worse than G4
Last year the G4 dropped sub £350 quite quick and that phone was better recieved.
Go get a G4 and a few leather backs and you'll be pretty happy.
I had a G2 and planning on upgrading to this come summer.
Expect it to get very cheap....
