i7 is quite a low end one (all U series are), but if you're after a 12.5" laptop, you're going to be pretty limited anyway.

"Coming with Windows 7 Professional Edition 64-bit Operating System installed, along with Windows 8 Professional 64-bit as a Recovery/Downgrade, whatever operating system you prefer to use, the choice is yours."
I love how they consider Windows 8 to be a downgrade

Great deal! Really wish this thing had thunderbolt 3 instead of OneLink, I probably would've bought at 1200 if it did!

performs worst than my 5 years old quad core 2630, I regret when bought U series laptop for my gf

U=Underpowered. It's nice of Intel to warn people like that.

You're comparing quad core with dual core. 5th and 6th gen U series cpu's actually have very good clock rate compared to 3rd and 4th. They can hold clock rate without throttling when you push them hard. But it all depends on how good is the cooling system.

u series r not so bad. depending what you're using laptop for. but anyway something for something better battery life for a bit less performance.
my u6200 takes only 16watt on 30Wh battery ot can easily stay more than 4hrs. you won't be able to make it on normal i5.

I think it's unacceptable for a £700 laptop to only have 8gb ram.

You know 90% of people will never use the full 8GB of RAM you will only come close doing gaming or high end processing which isn't what a lightweight laptop is designed for.

Mine arrived yesterday and I have next business day on-site warranty until 2018.

Sweet, then these units have the 3 year on-site warranty :-)
Note: Lenovo BIOS/UEFI usually works with whitelists for Wifi/WAN adapters so you can only use certain models, but don't think that applies to SSD's

Is the keyboard backlit?
Bigspin

yes I'm very happy with the purchase. Keyboard is backlit and joy to type. Fan is not noisy. Above all build quality is excellent. Sound from speakers are flat but didn't expect miracles from tiny speakers.

Sure, but such as in my case,16GB can be essential when you are using it as a research laptop. (tend to use ram heavy macros/techniques a lot.)
