Thought I'd jump in the bandwagon.

Refurb iPhone 5S doing the O2 refresh thing.

1) order phone on 3GB per month/no up front cost tariff

2) phone comes, pay it off in full = 24 * £6 = £144

3) cancel airtime tariff

How do you expect them to repair it if you don't 'physically' send it to them??? Long distance faith healing?

The one so called from ebay comes with scratches on the back and some of them might have screen replaced. In the past no single refurb from o2 came with any scratches or cosmetic damage, instead they looked all brand new because usually they are open box customer returns anyway + you are covered with proper 12 month warranty from o2 (some people mentioned they received a refurb phone with 12 month warranty from apple).

Insurance and warranty may worth the hassle though. It took around 10 minutes including requesting the iPhone to be unlocked.

You can get a silver or grey one on pay as you go for £154 and no hassle on the o2 site.

Silver and space grey still in stock.

The tariff says its £27.50 but it's broken into two contracts. One for £6 and the other £21.50. Ring o2 when it comes and pay off full 24 X £6. DONT put the sim in your device. Then ask to get it unlocked for free. Then cancel the airtime contract with no charge. Simple!

Be wary of any warranty with o2 that's not with Apple directly. Usually these refurb iPhones from o2 have a few months Apple warranty left if your lucky. Had to get my iPhone 5 replaced under warranty with o2 and was nothing but hassle. You have to physically send your device away and wait a week without ano phone while they fix it. Sent mine twice and they sent it back each time saying it's fixed when it wasn't. Eventually They sent me another refurb which had screen issues but this one had time left on its Apple warranty so Apple replaced the whole unit no questions asked there and then. o2 don't use Apple for repairs but dodgy third party companies that aren't authorised by Apple - look on o2 forums.

Why go for a £27.50 tariff when the lesser £17 tarrifs and above offer the same amount for device ie £6 ?
androidavis
10 Apr 16 2 #14
Comment .

I thought the point jimbob was making is a heads up that the warranty on this apple phone is not like the apple warranty. With the apple warranty it involves having your phone swapped there and then at the shop. With the warranty on this apple phone deal you have to send it away to a third party that tries to fix things on behalf of O2. They might fix it the same day they receive it and post it back to you within a few days, or they might not be able to look at it for a long time, all the while you may be without a mobile phone.

Oh you do get spoilt with an apple warranty they way they carry it out but then again check out how much they charge for a smart phone
andyatcorco
10 Apr 16 #16
I got two of these this way, before Christmas and when they were signed in to apple account, they both still had full apple warranty on them from that date. I think most of these refurbs will be that way but o2 can't guarantee this so they sell them stating the o2 warranty.

This is not a great deal... £144 with hassle included and Refurb!

Ring Customer Services within 14 days and cancel the airtime, pay the phone plan (24 x £6 - £144) then ask them to unlock free of charge
shabba1888
11 Apr 16 #34
Any reason why you have to order with the 3GB monthly tariff as from the 300mb tariff upwards there is no upfront cost.

Just spoke to O2 on live chat and was advised that if you pay off the phone plan and cancel the airtime within 14 days then you won't be charged for the first month. They also advised that if you buy it on pay monthly then you can unlock the phone anytime free of charge, if you buy it outright then you need to pay £15.00 to unlock the phone

I just called to do mine.

The 1st advisor that I spoke to didn't have a clue and said I couldn't do what I was asking.

I said that it could be done and advised her to check with a supervisor which she did & was given the correct information.

She then transferred me to retentions who knew exactly what they were doing and it was done without fuss.

My advice is not to go into the details with the initial advisor but ask to be transferred to retentions to cancel your account - once there explain what you want to do.

shabba1888

Handset received at 12.15pm today. 15 minutes later I have the device plan (£144) paid off and the tariff cancelled. Really straight forward. As Tomb said, just go through to retentions team.

iPhone is like new, not a mark on it.

Is it quite common these doesn't comes without earphone and charger? That means you will only get a phone
Olly34
12 Apr 16 #43
I just got one of these and they are refurbished by Apple with full outer shell replacement, and full 12 months warranty, they are really a new phone, but it comes without earphones or charger plug.
Apple refurb all there own products and sell on there refurb site, but not the phones, they pass them to the phone dealers, well a few of them anyway, and O2 are one of them, it is third Apple refurb product I have had including two iPhones and an iPad Air, it is a no brainer with a brand new outer shell and battery, can't go wrong.
You can also buy these from o2 for £153 outright, I have a contract for £17 a month, £11 for the airtime and £6 for the phone.....

I used a similar offer last year and the phone was great, the o2 people were idiots. I got charged twice for buying the phone, then they said I did not cancel, then they accepted the cancel, but from the wrong date, then they charged me again for airtime, then they cut me off accidently (it took 48 hours to get that sorted) then I got someone reasonable who told me to cancel my DD as I was going to be hit again big time. It took over 6 months to clear up this mess and I am convinced that o2 have become the new 3 when it comes to customer service.

Not once did they apologise.

The offer is good, but if it goes wrong the company are truly awful. I know from previous threads my situation is not a one-off.

19 Apr 16 #83
As mentioned earlier - once you've paid off the phone in full, you ask for it to be unlocked. Then once that's processed call again to cancel. You have 14 days grace period to cancel without paying the full month - you may be charged for the number of days the sim was active. For me it was 3 days so about £2.
ma11wi11
19 Apr 16 #84
Try a different sim in it. It may already be unlocked. Otherwise it may be that you didn't activate the sim they sent by making a few calls/texts from it.

FWIW I had similar unlatching rejections but I think it's because it's already unlocked. My Vodafone sim works just fine.

Just received an email to say that my bill is ready and I will be charged £266.24! Contacted O2 via live chat who advised that this was a mistake and they will remove the charge from my account.

Worth cancelling the direct debit from your bank account just in case!

OK so my situation is not so bad .... but

got phone yesterday sim card no used - was in O2 box and looks to be new

checked Apple for the warranty - shows on Apple website but just says .... We are unable to display coverage details because your iPhone has not been activated. ..... I will activate the phone with a Three sim when I get home to UK tomorrow

had an online live chat with O2 and cancelled the airtime and converted to PAYG so all documented there - new PAYG order confirmed and shows on myO2

called O2 to pay off the device costs and that was no trouble - got a receipt via email and MyO2 now shows
Device Plan - Your Device Plan has been settled.

However the iPhone no longer shows on my account so the unlocking link does not work

used the online form to et the unlock code and got this reply from O2 ...

I'm sorry, we have not been able to unlatch your device at this time.
The reason given is:

The IMEI - xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx has not been used on our network, so it will
not be possible to unlatch it. !!!!

Now from previous posts the advice was not to activate the O2 sim

Is it sure that if I first activate the iPhone 5S with a Three sim it will remain unlocked?

This is not super critical because the phone si for my Dad and he is on giffGaff so should work even if locked to O2 - but would like to move him to Life Mobile soon ...

any thoughts on the unlock situation?

EliTom
ma11wi11 to elitom
28 Apr 16 #88
I'm not so sure about the THREE sim trick. Ideally a safer way is to activate on O2 and do the usual way. Yes it takes another 2 days but should work.

Have you tried a different sim in it yet? It's really really obvious if the unlatch hasn't worked.
elitom
29 Apr 16 #89
Looks like this has expired now - gone from the O2 website

anyway my phone must be a new Apple refurb - did not lock to first sim inserted - used an O2 PAYG sim as the supplied contract sim has been deactivated already ...... phoen activated fine and shows full 12 month warranty on Aplle website - but then tested phone with an EE and a Three sim - both work - so these are not locked at all

thanks OP - Father is happy to be getting a cheap upgrade
