Temps at load were mostly in 77 to 79 degrees range at 100% CPU usage, running Realbench and Prime 95 stress testing. Occasionally crept into low 80s but way under the 100 it takes before the CPU starts throttling itself.

You mean the fastest consumer quad core CPU on the market with absolutely no competition whatsoever?
This is a great price for the best around. i5 6600k is the best bang per buck though, ~90 percent of the performance for 60 percent of the price and similarly good overclockability. Intel could charge silly money, but both seem within reason all things considered.
pcangeldust
10 Apr 16#21
It might come across as shocking but it reaches these at temps at stock settings. I just done some further tests; set bios settings on default without XMP and it reached roughly 83 degrees max after 10 minutes. With XMP + core enhancement enabled it reaches 100 degrees Celsius after about a minute and a half so I ended the test early.
I will try another test with XMP enabled without core enhancement

Sounds like the CPU heatsink isn't attached properly and/or a poor thermal paste application. Which cooler is it?
XMP for the memory is basically a set of timings and clocks. It shouldn't have much impact on the CPU temperature.

Not sure if I should nitpick here, but where did you get 10% more performance compared to the 6600k from?
vulcanproject
10 Apr 16#25
Depending on what is being done. Lots of heavy multithreaded, yes it's more. Lots of gaming or single core, often less.
83C is still too hot without any overclocking, even with a low-end cooler, but with yours that's terrible. What thermal paste did you use?
I would set the BIOS to default and get that temp down before doing anything else.
Is the fan working on the cooler (silly question I know)? Re-applying thermal paste and reseating is probably the best thing to do.
pcangeldust
10 Apr 161#29
Fan works fine, pump seems to work and am using arctic MX-4 thermal compound that I got about 2 years ago from amazon. Unless that stuff expires which I highly doubt then it shouldn't be a problem. I reseated everything a few days ago, it didn't help with temps in fact it got worse, I will give it one last try tomorrow. Tbh I think the cooler is just crap, I guess you get what you pay for :disappointed:

Yikes, that is high for stock setting.
Are you letting the motherboard automatically set the core voltage? Some mobo manufacturer's auto settings are a bit ridiculous and are like trying to kill your precious new cpu lol
If temps are fluctuating from low to high and vice versa, I would suggest checking and reinstalling the cooler you use for the cpu. If you are using an AIO cooler, it's very easy for the tubes to pull the block in one direction and when tightening, you may not get the best flat contact between the heatsink and cpu. I always make sure I tighten screws in an alternate and criss-cross fashion and count the turns (usually in 3s) I did each time, to make sure I am uniformly fastening the cooler to the cpu. Cooler installation is one of the easiest steps of a build to mess up so if temps seem off, take it off and try reinstalling. Don't worry about the mess. Just have some Arctic paste removal solutions on hand or any isopropyl alcohol will do.
The core voltage looks to be normal for the 6700K, nothing out of the ordinary when boosting to 4.2GHz.

Just installed the H600 myself on an overclocked Xeon E5450 @ 4GHz/1.22V...running Aida64 Stability Test cores average in high 60s @ 100% with fan under 1200rpm...using MX-2 so seems OK to me.
Did you tighten the 4 screws all the way down?
pcangeldust
10 Apr 16#40
I tightened them just enough you can still see about 3-4mm of thread on the screws. It feels completely solid, I didn't want to overdo it as the backplate starts bending quite a bit.
rev6
10 Apr 16#41
65C temps stock at 1.3v, even with a budget air cooler. You should try another cooler.
leetron
10 Apr 16#42
I made that mistake...high temps, thought it was tight 'enough'...reapplied TIM then screwed until the screws fully tightened...sorted, temps normal.
Feels secure but if screws not tightened-off then plate not fully contacting the CPU...think this could be your issue.

If your into gaming, really look at the TomsHardware CPU charts, i7 and even i5 only gives 5% over an i3. I bought a Core i3-6320 as its 3.9 Ghz 2 core processor. The higher rate means I save 1/2 price but only lose 5% difference

If you're only looking to game, your 6600K should be good for quite a few years to come. It's one of the top gaming cpus on the market at the moment, especially when overclocked. No point buying a K processor, if you don't overclock it. Paired with a good graphics card, like a GTX 970 or GTX 980, and you'll be able play most games at ultra settings, 1080P or 1440P, and some at 4K, with good playable frame-rates.
Graphics cards on the other hand do seem to change every few years and it might be worth waiting until the new ones from Nvidia and AMD are out. On the CPU side, you're good though.

I recently bought the Core i3-6320. I looked into the i5 and i7 and spent lots of time reviewing the test comparisons. Basically unless you are a dev, which runs multiple VMs all of the time or a pure game enthusiast, which has money to burn, the i7 is a waste. the Core i3-6320 runs at 3.9 ghz, runs battlefield 4 5% lower than the i7 and is under 1/2 the price.

Maybe, I dunno. But I think if I only had the i3 then when I play games such as GTA V the cpu would be the bottleneck. I can tell the difference in my i5 between when I do and don't apply the overclock before I play.
