If all you use a car for 5 days a week going to work, 8K miles a year is 30 miles a day. Who would want to be on a bus for 30 miles a day !?

I only do 1500 miles a year in my car but would never consider not having one, depending where you live bus routes are ridiculous, e.g. for me to go to the next town 5 miles away takes 10 mins in car, but 90 mins on the bus!!!

Edit: not to mention costs - I am quite happy using buses and trains, gives me a chance to look around instead of driving, but the costs are prohibitive. We go up to Edinburgh once a year and in our diesel estate it costs us about £40 in fuel. To go on the train as a family of four it cost over £160!!! Similar story nearby, the train to Manchester takes an hour and costs £75 for a family of four, whereas the diesel costs about £6!

Most lease companies adhere to an independent fair ware standard, I can't remember the name of mine sorry, but they have clear expected marks like 1 dent on a single panel no bigger than 10mm, as long as the metal isn't exposed; 1 20mm scuff on the wheel etc. Anything more than this and they advise using a S.M.A.R.T repair service as long as the warranty is transferable. All that said, my lease is just about to go back with some marks very close to the stated acceptable limits so we'll see. Fingers crossed..

I have just leased a Mercedes C220d 2.1 SE, choice of 4 metallic colours, leather trim, climate control for £227 per month over 2 years with 9 months deposit.
First years tax included.
There was a £180 deposit inclusive of VAT.
I worked out that buying a 3 year old Mercedes over 4 years with approx 30k on the clock was more expensive than having 2 new Mercedes deals over the same period.
No surrender value at the end but peace of mind and no repairs as they would both be within warranty.

3 May 16 #133
its more than that, it means you never commit to paying for a car fully (not really)
take a 3 year lease, but fall on hard times, hand the keys in at 18 months
or the 3 year point if you want another new one
or if you love it, pay the balloon. might not be optimal, but it always leaves you with options.

also, not dealing with the second hand market and allll that it entails, the great unwashed and dodgy dealers and someone elses problems. no thanks, new all the way.

I was not saying people do not need a car at all, just that travelling 15 miles to work on a bus isn't an impossibility. My circumstances don't seem that exceptional, a lot people in my office either bus or cycle to work.
Having said that, I am passionate about cars and have no intention of getting by with just using public transport.

I did have to stump up more cash than his initial payment , however that is it then I have no monthly regular payment on the car .

People apportion different values to different things . I spend a fortune going on extravagant foreign holidays meanwhile my workmate with his latest fabia goes to north wales and stays in a caravan for a week or visits other destinations in the UK .

It all depends on someones personal cash flow . my cash flow situation is such that if I wanted to replace the fabia today I could afford to go out and buy its replacement and have 2 cars whilst I went through with the process of selling the fabia . I appreciate this is not the case for everyone . And obviously you have to consider the cost of having 2 cars taxed and insured on the road concurrently and the risk that you might not be able to re sell for what you want or in the time that you want .I personally have no plans to replace the fabia until it is broken beyond economical repair so selling on privately or part exchanging is not a concern for me .

I was replying to the person who said if you only do 8k miles a year you should get a bus and you do not need a car. The reality for most people is that doesn't work. If it works for you that's great. 30 miles a day is a lot on a bus. I commute to Manchester which you would think is a good bus route and it's only 10 miles away, not 15. But it's two separate bus journeys totalling 1 hour 15, or a car journey is 30-45 mins depending on traffic. There and back in a day I would rather travel 1 hour 30 max in a car as opposed to 2 hours 30 on the bus. The two buses are operated by two companies so the two day passes cost far more than fuel and wear and tear. And finally having a car allows me to pick up my son after work and use it for a whole host of things such as shopping and going on mini holidays with my lad. I'm sorry if you think my comment is arrogant but not everyone's situation is the same as yours and over 60 people liked my comment for a reason.

I also bet you had to stump up more cash to buy your used Fabia than your workmate did. I think a massive bonus on leasing is not having to go through selling your car. You can either part exchange and lose out or sell privately, but you can't do that until you have the new car, so won't have the cash from the old one to help you out.
MIDURIX
30 Apr 16 1 #114
You could lease a £25k car and basically spend/lose £5k over two years or buy the car for £25k and maybe lose £10k on depreciation over two years. Nearly every new car buy or lease involves some kind of monetary lose over the years, so you can't compare it to buying a 4-5 year old car.

I personally like you have never owned or leased a brand new car (hire cars aside)
I have bought used cars in the past , I have a used car now so I understand why people buy used cars .

However there is no comparison between my 59 plate skoda fabia , and my workmates 16 plate skoda fabia that he has on a lease because if mine breaks down tomorrow then I have to take it to the garage and pay to have it fixed ,His is also the latest model , and he had it from delivery mileage . Some people value driving the latest car . Some people do not want the unknowns around car ownership they want to pay a set price and know that this is all they will pay . Some people dont have time or skills to carry out minor repairs on their car .

Now if I keep my fabia for the next 3 years without anything major mechanical going wrong bar routine service parts then yes my costs over that time will be cheaper than the costs he pays to lease his car in that time . However in 3 years time my car will be almost 10 years old , probably look and feel its age . His will however be 3 years old and he will be about to return it and get a brand new one assuming he carries on leasing .I will also have to inconvenience of having at least 3 days over the next 3 years without a car whilst I get it MOT'd

I think when this fabia does eventually die I am going to look into leasing for the sheer convenience . I am planning on starting a family so I do not want to be saying to the kids no daddy cannot take you to the park at the weekend he has to take his car apart to repair it . again .

Also some people earn much more than £50 a day . I know I do .

No, but if you rent the Infiniti, at the end of 2 years you've spent nearly £5,000 and you've got no car. You could buy a pretty nice older car for less money that would last for a lot longer than 2 years. I don't doubt that leasing is a good option for some people, but I suspect a lot of people are driving leased cars as a way of living beyond their means.

I had to replace a headlight which was about £90, and I recently replaced a section of the exhaust which was another £80, but apart from that it's just been sets of tyres and one new battery - which you could class as "consumable" items. I'd love to have a shiny new car like the Infiniti, but while my Nissan may have a few dings and scratches, I own it; it's all mine, not just a rental.

Usually no problem. Ford gives me a very precise document of exactly what's chargeable, and its very fair. Fair wear and tear and scuffs and dints you'd expect for the mileage really. I don't really understand this business of "car leasing". Maybe I'm missing something - I've never done it myself - but £5,000 to have a car for 2 years sounds extremely expensive to me. In 2009 I bought a 2005 Nissan Almera 1.6l for £3,500 and it's done 55,000 miles since then with no mechanical problems at all. Tax is an issue of course - £160 per year, but it's still basically one-third of the price.

I've never driven a brand new car, and maybe it's fantastic, but paying £2,500 a year for a car you'll never own is for people who have a lot of money. £50 a week, not including petrol, just to keep the car on the road? you've almost got to do an extra day's work per week just to pay for the privilege of going to work.

Still, it's probably a very good deal as car leasing goes.
fishmaster to Cosmic_Mastermind
29 Apr 16 17 #82
Every single deal it's guaranteed you get this almost exact post! Literally everytime!

You don't understand leasing then go on to describe something that is clearly nothing like leasing a car. What is there to understand? Having an old car for however long and however many miles is irrelevant, this is leasing a brand new car.

The clue is in BRAND NEW! How is it not possible to understand this?

Lookup leasing an old reliable car, have you done that? Good, OK so how many lease deals did you find on old cars? None? Really, there's a surprise.

In 2009 I bought a 4 year old car and...Oi STOP! Buying a 4 year old car is NOT the same at all as leasing a BRAND NEW car is it?

Yes BUT... NO stop it, a 4 year Nissan Almera is that the same as a BRAND NEW Inifiniti Q30? Is an old car the same as a new car? Is it? If you wanted a new car would you buy an old one? Would you?

Hello I've come in to buy a BRAND NEW old car please. GTFO!----> of my showroom n00b!

Is buying a 4 year old car the same as buying a BRAND NEW BMW M135i (0-60 in 5.1s). Well I bought something similar for £5,000, no you didn't, you're lying aren't you? Well just a bit but I think my 4 year old car is sort of the same as leasing a BRAND NEW car, it involves cars doesn't it?

Common mistake: Lease deal versus a used car, they both involve cars but they're not the same thing are they. Always remember this when commenting on lease deals, think first and remember to stop at the RED traffic light.

/sarcasm

In the next installment we'll go in to ownership and common misconceptions about owning a car and the difference between an old car and a used car in relation to ownership. Jesus I really look forward to that :/
vladdy to Cosmic_Mastermind
29 Apr 16 #85
Have you had any repairs on the Almera? Because that would've bumped your overall price. Plus like with everything, you pay a premium on new. I do agree with you that leasing is not the cheapest option and probably it best fits people who drive a lot, don't see much value in getting a lease if you plan on doing just the 8k per annum unless you really want that car badly.

A friend of mine went for this car via his employer's car scheme. It's fantastic really, the 1.5D engine easily gives him 50mpg+ around town and it's scarily quiet inside for a diesel. Plenty of mid-range grunt for a 1.5 engine, huge boot and a pretty decent interior to boot. Infiniti are to Nissan what Lexus are to Toyota. If you aren't a badge snob, you won't be disappointed
plewis00 to hcc27

I do 15k-20k a year, different manufacturers offer different additional mileage costs - some are great and some are not. The general rule of thumb is the better they know the 2nd hand market for the model, the cheaper additional mileage will be. They can risk adjust quite heavily on ambiguous positions.
If the difference between paying for extra miles upfront is similar to at the back end I generally do that = the reason is if you pay for 20k a year, and end up only doing 10 you get no refund.
VW's are cheap at the moment because of the rigging scandal, you can beat them up at dealers or pick up a cheap lease deal. That being said if you do the sums and the manufacturer offers better deals through purchase then that is the smart play!

Other option is to save for years and buy it outright, no wrong options here my goal is always to ensure once I decided on what option to go for I get it as cheaply as possible.

Car ownership is very expensive - i generally try to buy what appreciates and lease what depreciates.
unknownorigin
29 Apr 16 1 #62
The traditional difference between PCP and PCH is PCP offers you the option of buying the car at the end, that is it. My point was to highlight that both methods "look and feel" identical. You pay a deposit, agree mileage, agree duration. Leasing new to then buy at the end and absorb the depreciation would seem a really strange approach, sure the car companies would like you do to that but personally I don't want to pay depreciation + monthly rate. I would rather just pay 1 and keep cycling new cars every 24 months.
If you are looking to buy a car after leasing I would recommend cutting straight to buying a 2 year old vehicle with low mileage (depending on how much dealer contribution you can get).
cheers,

While I'm probably biased because I posted the Civic deal last week, I really don't think this car stacks up against the Civic.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/honda-civic-1-6-dtec-se-plus-5dr-nav-1800-initial-rental-240-admin-fee-24-months-2431301

The Civic has sat nav, climate control, cruise control and reverse camera amonst other spec improvements over this Q30. The official combined MPG is 68 for the Q30 and 107 bhp vs 78 mpg and 118 bhp for the Civic. Boot on the Q30 is 368 litres, the Civic is 477 litres.

On top of this, this Civic deal is over £750 less than this.

In fact the only reasons I can fathom for choosing the Q30 are aesthetics/personal preference. On paper the Civic wins every time in my opinion.

You've described a PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) there, NOT a lease!

Thanks - I have got an 8 year old Audi which I could sell for around 2k - which would pay for this deal. I suppose, like for most, its getting over the psychological barrier of not owning a car and then having finance etc etc.

These made in Sunderland at Nissan plant? In fairness the mackems make some solid built cars and the cars made there are way superior to the tat from India. (New Micra is made there.

The Q30 is a really nice car to look at so I went for a look at the local dealership. I have to be honest and say I was disappointed with the interior considering the market they are targeting. I decided on the A class deal posted a couple of months ago. Good deal though. Heat added

Thanks

Leasing deals are really good at the moment, for anyone unclear on the difference between leasing and going to buy a car- if you buy a car this way
- Go to dealer, choose car, tell them mileage, pay a deposit, have it for duration of contract then either i) buy it for a defined amount or ii) give it back. It is the same - except you will pay more at the dealer than if buying the same car through a lease.
If you buy cheap cars cash, leasing is not for you. If you do not want new cars, leasing is not for you. If you do buy new cars and want them as cheap as possible, like changing cars regularly and don't do uber high mileage, it is very much for you.

Take the BMW M135i example below, the entire cost of the 2 year lease will be around 7.5k. If you were to buy that car the depreciation over the same period would be more than this alone, plus you get a 5 second car

There is so much choice right now, for example:

Kia Sportage - 24m/5k/ - £127.19 (IP=1144.69)
VW Golf SV Hatchback 24/5k- £131.99 (IP 1187.89)
VW Tiguan SUV - 24m/5k- 201.59 (IP 1814.29)
BMW 318i - 24m/5k/ - £202.79 (IP 1825.09)
Audi Q3 - 48m / 5k - £214.79 (IP 1933.09)
BMW 135i - 24m/5k - £238.79 (IP 2149.09)
Audi A6 - 24m/10k - £227.99 (IP 2061.89)
Land Rover Evoque - 48/5k - £251.99 (IP 2267.89)
BMW 520d M Sport - 24/8k - 287.99 (IP 2591.89)
BMW X4 - 24/5k = 358.79 (IP 3326.29)

I think I need to live closer to work... if I'm not working from home then it's a 100 mile round trip to work. Then there's all the 3-400 each way mile trips to our other offices and customer sites. I'm doing 20k miles a year

Some people are just idiots matey! Where I work is only about 8 miles away and on a good day I can get there in 20-30 mins. It would take 2 different buses and over an hour to get there if I didn't have a car! I only do about 5k per year and so does my wife but we still prefer to have a car each. Why not if you can afford it?

Not for me prefer flexibility of 2 years and its cheaper per month... Doing the maths 937+163*24 = £202 a month .... over 36 months its 478+189.90*36 = £203.50 a month (I might have missed an admin fee in totals for both)
