Classic film. Not classic as in Oscar worthy, but classic all the same. Can't put my finger on why it's a classic, but it's one of those films that if you see a small part of it on TV, you'll end up watching the remainder of it.

Just watching it now through the Google play app I popped on my Fire TV and the quality is more than acceptable.

It also streams with a bass rich 5.1 soundtrack too, so its a welcome addition to my little collection of Pringles collected movies.

Well summed up and a rare balanced post here. They are what they are, I enjoyed watching all the above in some form including Independence Day. Ideal for the popcorn brigade, or someone looking for some simple light entertainment. No need to pretend they are great movies or the best in their genre though.

And its on the TV 3 times a week, every week since about 2 years after it came out.

I did say 'my' credit to be fair but I also own the million other apps, books, magazines and music you mentioned. Why didn't you know that already or ask without replying such a fast comment?

However had you said videos then yes that would have made more sense, since this is a movie purchase after all.

There's a batch of these that come under the same category - Armageddon, Independence Day, Day After Tomorrow. All equally absurd, but as others have said, they just roll with it.
There are days when Hotel Rwanda and Shooting Dogs are just not the thing.

Doesn't make any sense though when you can watch videos in up to 8k via a browser on YouTube these days.

It all depends on what you mean by 'good'.
If you mean, well written, directed, acted, absorbing, coherant, entertaining etc. then the answer is no.

On the other hand, If you have straw for brains and like whooping and hollering while the good ol' USA 'Kicks Alien ASS!' then I'm sure this will be right up your street. :smiley:

If I recorded the sounds of me farting in the bath, slowed it down, took the pulses of the bubbles and turned them into Morse code, transcribed that and turned it into a script it would be better than Signs. all streaming online is 480p on pc. I researched this last year when I rented some hd movies. Best way around it is to screen mirror via your phone

So were talking about the same time then. Not sure why people are taking this literally and observing they are more than 3 days apart re the release. No one says Lost Boys, Goonies or Explorers were more than 5 mins apart when that decade is reflected on.

My recollection of ET was not an Alien invasion of planet Earth. But seeing you mention it, I have to say ET was also many leagues above Independence Day.

Signs was not out any where near the same time as Independence Day, I'm sure they are a good 6 or 7 years apart. Plus Signs is truly awful and a completely different kind of film anyway, just because there is an alien in it.. may as well compare it to ET too. I think Independence Day gets so much praise because of how ground breaking the visual effects were at the time. Not great now, but the film set the bar high and began the resurgence in disaster movies... Deep Impact, Amargeddon, Dantes Peak, Daylight.

Signs made the failure of using an intelligent director who goes beyond surface level, and cast Mel Gibson instead of Will Smith, and forgot to minimize plot and characters replaced by action and special FX. It lacked the woo-hoos of course too. Yes I see your way of thinking. That it did not go for the blockbuster smash and grab approach to reel in the masses with hype and marketing was one of its clear failures. I suppose that's the downside of a quieter but more credible film. Who'd be a film maker eh?

I was quite clearly talking about (or so I thought) moves of the same theme/genre. I.e. Alien invasion, Aliens on planet Earth. Close Encounter is rather old and dated, I picked modern comparisons, and movies that were more plot/character driven to example alternatives and better films.

Let's just put this to bed now...Signs is in no way superior to Independence Day. That's not just my opinion. It's fact.

My comment was I disagree that its not one of the greatest movies ever made, and I would add to that along with all its sequels. For the record I enjoyed watching Independence Day and Jurassic Park to a point. I am just commenting on this thread to add some much needed balance.

I tried this on the PS3 earlier and it plays fine in full HD. I imagine the PS4 and Xbox One will be the same.

That's the whole point of Signs. It is actually a character/plot driven movie under the format of "suspense" from the Director of The Sixth Sense. There is more too movies than Special FX, and in your face wham, bang, thankyou mam.

Independence Day was made for an American audience, hence the "woo-hoo take that you Alien mother-pukka" type nonsense from Mr Smith which goes down well with some. Jurrassic Park is supposedly one of the greatest movies of all time if you go by online movie review sites. But for those of us who look beyond a few fancy special FX and woo-hoos....

What the heck are you talking about? The 2005 War of the Worlds remake had none of those things.

If you want to cite Sci-Fi brilliance then talk about Blade Runner, Alien, Event Horizon or Close Encounters. Not anything with Tom Cruise in it.

I get that Independence Day isn't a world beater, except if you measure a film purely by SFX for which is was top-rate when it came out (esp in surround sound etc), although the plot is one huge hole, esp the stolen 60yr old alien ship they can miraculously fly and interface their software both with it and the mother ship in order to upload a virus - so awful.

But you lost me when you said 'Signs' was better - that film is as wierd as Mel Gibson himself, was a real turkey and seemed like they hadn't bothered to work out the ending before they reached it. It actually goes the extra mile to beat Independence Day for lameness. Final scene:
"OMG there's aliens all around the house - we're doomed!"
"Lets' lock the door"
Alien "****, the door's locked - well, that's us beat - let's wrap this up and go invade another planet boys"

Well its not really a like-for-like comparison, so if a "cheesey Woo-Hooo Alright you Alien sucka's" type of movie is your kind of thing, then sure your going to feel Independence Day is the better film. If you enjoy something of more, substance, with greater distinction and less simplicity then War of the Worlds and other movies will tick your box.

On Rotten Tomatoes audience scores are as follows:-

Independence Day :- 75%
Signs:- 67%
War Of The Worlds:- 42%

So the general movie viewing population disagree with you. Signs and War Of The Worlds both got 74% critic scores compared to 60% for Independence Day so it might be an inferior movie from a plot etc. point of view but Independence Day is the more enjoyable "popcorn movie" of the three. Also Signs came out 6 years later and War of The Worlds was 9 years later so I'm not sure I would say they came out about the same time period.

We both like Mario perhaps, but we certainly both don't like this movie. Bang average at best. Signs with Mel Gibson was out around the same time period and was superior. Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds remake was also much better. Quite a few Alien invasion type movies are above Independence Day. It is not the worst film or an awful film by any stretch. But it did not deserve the fuss it got and still doesn't.
