You can reduce the running cost of these by simply throwing them in to an open fire.

For a similar running cost, simply burn five pound notes on an open fire whilst throwing pound coins out of an open window.

In all seriousness, have you research German style electric radiators?
Expensive to install, but intended to supply an electric only central heating system, which are now regularly installed in most German homes as standard. Fairly efficient (well it is German!).
Would enable you to switch 100% electric and not have to work with the money grabbing LPG companies at all!

You know of a 2000W electric heater that's cheaper to run? Please, tell me of this wondrous machine!

Roughly one five pound note a day if you leave it on all day outside so the thermostat never kicks in. Is suppose we all need to do our bit for global warming.

I can vouch for this design.
It's a common model rebranded as a million different manufacturers so mine's not actually a Goodmans, but it is quiet, well-built and has nice soft-touch plastic (though I have seen some versions in hard plastic).
Unfortunately I have to use mine regularly every winter but it's been dependable for a good 5 years so far.
It has fan-only, 1000W and 2000W modes plus thermostat.

For people living in the countryside, and we are also pensioners, these are cheap to run! Yes, you read right, cheap to run. We are under ransom by the LPG companies and although have negotiated a large discount on our gas recently are still paying around £2.50 an hour to run our heating/water, so as this costs us around 28p an hour to run you can understand we sometimes use this when we settle down into a single room for the evening.
I got one of these when they were £7, £1 a bargain.
(Okay, here come the comments on why I should not use this instead of heating)

I was just making the point in a semi humorous fashion that these electric fan heaters are very expensive to run and the very low purchase price is somewhat false economy.

The efficiency is the same as the convector heaters posted on here a while ago.

A 2000W fan heater costs the same to run as a 2000W convection heater or a 2000w electric radiator or a 2000W ceramic heater. You know, they all use 2000W of electricity.

They are the most efficient electrical appliance that you own as 100% of the power used is given off in heat. Forget your LED light bulbs!!

Not really, the fan is small having a fan is better because essentially it heats up a larger area more quickly. frankly i can see no other way that could heat a room faster and for so low a cost. even burning logs costs something, go get the logs, get the matches etc. I used to sell air conditioning and these little heaters i think are fantastic value for money. if you pay more for a heater you have to add that to the running costs over the life of the heater. doubt you could do better than these little fan heaters. if you have a fan without a heater look how small an area it heats so the fan is a necessary part of the product. they are thermostatically controlled and often have speed controls. sophistication at the flick of a switch that we all take so much for granted. add a cheap timer to the wall socket and volia you hae it all in a nice neat package for peanuts.

If electricity costs 16p per kWh, then this heater would cost 32p/hour to run, how is that expensive?

looks like a rebranded one of these (recalled) ones.
hopefully these ones have don't have the fault !
except that only in UK gas is measured in KwH Which is not even real measurement for gas it's actual measured in volume.... Still don't understand why the f this is done in UK...i Suppose it's made like that so dumb people can have a better understanding but seriously WTF?

I was just cheekily making the point that as electric heaters go, they are all pretty much equal in efficiency so this 2000 watt heater costs the same to run and produces the same amount of heat as any other 2000 watt electric heater.
If you want cheaper then you need a gas fire / central heating or night storage on an economy 7 tariff. Or just put an extra jumper on :stuck_out_tongue:.
I must be missing the savings I'd make on a £500+ purchase at 2.5KW.

It is 5 times more expensive but a fan heater is virtually 100% efficient. Even with a decent condensing boiler (and assuming it's actually running in condensing mode), the loss of of a central heating system would make that three times the cost closer to twice. I don't think anyone would suggest using a bank of these to heat a house but for an individual room it is cheaper to run this than an entire central heating system. I'm living alone at the moment in a 3 bed house, in the mornings I only need my bedroom and the en suite heated and that's much cheaper to do with a fan heater than running the central heating.

Your meter counts in volume but you get billed for the amount of energy you are supplied as the amount of energy in a given volume isn't not constant, so kWh is a sensible unit to charge for as it represents the energy you are using, not the volume. Google Calorific Value. A watt is not tied to electricity, it is a unit of power.

not really if you got decent central heating and radiators which you can adjust when not needed..
oil filled radiators on the other hand are pretty decent tho if you just need to heat 1 room and DO NOT have a gas central heating.
