For those that don't mind booking over a year in advance then this could be a great opportunity for a 35 night cruise next July especially if you don't want to fly. Visiting the Arctic as well as an itinerary that includes Iceland, Greenland and Norway (some of the most expensive places), I think this is a pretty amazing deal for less than £40 a night. Even if you were doing a land based tour of these placed accommodation and hotel costs are so expensive I doubt you could even find places to stay pee night as cheap as this let alone with all your food.

I've been to the Antarctic and believe me this is an amazing price for this Arctic itinerary. It's something I'm very much tempted with myself. I've been with Cruise and Maritime before and it's not great but this itinerary is good so thank god you don't have that many at sea days, take your own entertainment as their entertainment is really not great. Food wasn't bad though and when you think what you are getting it's a bargain.

Yep, also Tilbury and Liverpool (not this specific cruise though). I did a 8 night Norway one for £299 a while back and were one of the first ships to sail out from Liverpool. Very convenient......

Would there be additional costs as well for things such as food, drinks, going on land etc.

Sorry if a stupid question, I've never had a holiday like this but it looks great!

When I went alcohol is extra. As far as drinks go not too badly priced especially if you go for thinks like the cocktail of the day. We did manage to take some alcohol onboard into our hold luggage but they may check these at Hull. As Liverpool cruise port had only recently opened when I went with them it was chaos and bags weren't checked for alcohol. They always have tea and coffee available and at breakfast juice. Food is in abundance and included. We never did any cruise excursions massively overpriced, look into what's available yourself and DIY it, or book direct locally. Much better options and you are under no obligation to book cruise excursions.

Tipping is automatically added onto your account per day which you settle onboard but we removed these a day or so before the end of our cruise and asked for envelopes so we could tip directly to staff.

If you are a drinker then you could find alcohol expensive but we spent very little. There were two formal nights over our 8 nights and I think we had a cocktail each of about £3! I'm sure somewhere there will be a drink price list I'll have a Google for it now.

Drink wise, you can order in advance a wine package which compromises 5 bottles of wine and some mineral water http://i.imgbox.com/EYnVmnw3.png

There is also the option to have all inclusive at £17pp per day but this can only be done for the whole cruise so you can't just pay for one day here and there all inclusive. It also says all occupants is the cabin must purchase it which in my opinion is a bit rubbish especially if one of you doesn't drink!

It says bottled mineral water is extra. Now when I went there was always mineral water available in the buffet from 'the machine' and we did fill our water bottles up, especially for when we went ashore, climbing Pulpit Rock in Norway for example. You do not want to buy things like drinks in these places. In Norway some friends of ours paid £7 for two tiny glass bottles of Coca-Cola.

really tempted!
Has anyone would recommend outsides for an extra £1000 per couple, or rarher save money for entertainment?
Anything else we need to know, take care off?

Can't comment on outside, we did an inside. Make no mistake these are not Cunard or P&O and cabins are very basic. I also think the insides come only in a twin confirmation which we found odd as a couple but just shared a very small bed. The entertainment was also pretty bad and I was the youngest by about 30 years with most guests being over 60 so that says alot about the environment and how the entertainment is geared up for so make sure you are clear what you are getting. That said, this had a number of perks for us, on disembarkation we were always first off as we didn't need assistance, the crew were happier to engage and chat with us as many were nearer our age and the people that had booked the particularly good offer to Norway (probably as I posted it on HUKD at the time) were all easy to spot and we became known as the group who 'got the bargain price'. We made some firm friends on that trip. For the price you won't get anything remotely like this on any of those other companies. Tipping is £4pp per day added onto your account but as I mentioned you can opt out of this.

If you are use to 'luxury' cruising then do read carefully and go into it knowing you get exactly what you pay for.

We did an Antarctic cruise which are more expensive and of course the only possible way to see the Antarctic/South Georgia and we're lucky enough to get an upgrade from inside to a balcony for free. Not sure why as we had a very good offer, even cheaper than last minute cruises in the port town a couple of days before. That said Antarctic cruises are very expensive. The balcony was magical for us, looking at icebergs in the middle of the night in 'midnight sun' with penguins and complete isolation. I'd say if you are someone who is likely to spend a great amount of time sat out then go for it but I'd wither do a balcony or inside I don't think paying extra for a window is worth it. You have a good itinerary with not many at sea days.

Does seem a cracking deal to visit some really interesting places. 36 days of all you can eat temptations may be detrimental to the old waistline though. :-)

We went on a cruise to Norway with these folks and never were checked for booze. Do they normally only check when you initially board? If so you could always pick up provisions in Rosyth.
rachelandgromit to supergran
2 Apr 16 #11
I'm not sure as we only took it on at Liverpool on boarding. Perhaps if you had some kind of backpack you could try and take it back on but I wouldn't be as obvious to walk on with a Tesco carrier bag with lots of booze inside :stuck_out_tongue:

I was really interested, until I saw the price for a single room, that's even more than paying twice at the base rate, in fact 4 people can go for that price !! from £5765 for singles, that does not seem fair. Grudgingly I could accept paying twice the cost, as they will lose the occupancy, but more than 4 times, sorry will have to give that a miss.
rachelandgromit to Satchmo
2 Apr 16 1 #14
I know I noticed that I was really surprised as I've know Cruise and Maritime offer no single supplement before. They even have single cabins!
toulousenessie to Satchmo
2 Apr 16 1 #21
Just book and pay for a double cabin for 2 and just turn up. Pricing for singles are so unfair. I did this the other week with a hotel, it was cheaper for 2 to stay then pay for a single room

2 Apr 16 #17
I agree but as I said you won't get this price on any other. I went to the Antarctic with Ponant who were amazing. Everything was included, minibar etc L'Occitaine products and it was cheaper than the GA 'backpacker' cruises. To get to the Antarctic/South Georgia and Falklands though expect to pay over £4k pp!! And that is cheap......

Used to work in Hull 10 years back and to call it a sh*thole, would've been an insult to sh*tholes.
However, I'm led to believe it's much improved now, so before you knock it, I'd suggest a revisit.

Antarctic and Arctic are two places at opposite sides of the planet. Just to clarify this deal is for the North Pole aka Arctic. OP and some others take note. Good deal though.
rachelandgromit to fo_sho_yo
2 Apr 16 #25
I know I've been to Antarctic so I know the difference! Would you believe someone asked the expedition team on the Antarctic cruise if they were likely to see polar bears! Polar bears and penguins have never met.....

Penguins - Antarctic
Polar Bears - Arctic

Summer in the Antarctic is around Christmas and you can only cruise the Antarctic Nov-March. I was there are Christmas.

There are similarities I believe in terms of scenery and you will find ice in both of course, but many places around the Arctic have people residing there where you won't find that in Antarctica, unless you count some of the scientific research stations.

Great prices for cruising on a budget. Cabins are basic but adaquate. Funny how cruise lines differ on ideas of a big window, marco polo premium twin oceanview large window looks about 4ft x 3ft, ncl family suite floor to ceiling...now thats what I call a large window!

I really like the way cruise lines are offering 2 or 3 taster cruises, and highly recommend for both newbie and seasoned cruisers alike to get an idea of cabins, food and fellow travellers. For instance we looked at possibllity of doing p&o on our australia cruise next year, but a 3 day cruise indicated it definitely wasn't for us.

Seems a really decent deal. I'm from Hull and the City has improved and a lot of work is being done. A lot of people knock the City who have never been. Like every City there are rough areas, but you find a lot of people come, love the people and place and make it their home. Lots of stuff going for 2017 but the bungling council have lots of the work going on behind schedule... not good.

This sounds like something my Dad would be interested in, but I'm wondering why the ship comes back to the UK halfway through the trip? Spending half a day in Rosyth as part of a luxury cruise isn't my idea of fun and I used to live there

Don't worry, by the time the cruise sets off brexit will have happened and so Scotland will have had another referendum and have left the UK.

It's a beautiful ship, like an elegant old lady, and unlike the floating council estates which now seem to dominate cruising. We went to the Fjords on MP last year and we'd certainly go on it again. It has the best food of all the cruises we've been on, and the entertainment was good too - not quite as spectacular as on some of the massive boats with West End sized theatres, but more intimate and very good all the same. Typically a theatre show at night followed by live music in the bar (we stuck to the daily special 2f1 cocktail rather than buying a drinks package).

Extras would be tips (£4pppd, which adds up on a lon cruise), excursions (which are often £60/£70 ime, we do our own thing) and booze - but you don't have to spend anything over the initial price if you don't want to.

Looks a bargain cruise to me. Not sure I'd like to be on a boat for 35 days though, but this is a bargain price. We're thinking of going around Iceland with MP in June, and that's currently about £900 for 12 days.
