Was the basic model brand new? If so it's not a bad deal. For traffic I think you just needed a TA10 cable for the original unit, which costs £10 new on ebay. I'd contact Halfords Customer Service and see if you can get a partial refund for having been messed about and sold a lower-spec unit: http://www.halfords.com/advice/customer-services/want-to-get-in-touch?topCategoryId=292503

I originally got a Nuvi 2599LMT-D. Fairly confident mine was a return model as it had history destinations in eastern europe.
I don't know if I got the wrong cable or the unit was faulty - but I kept getting the message on start-up “The connected power cable is not compatible with traffic for this device. Traffic service is disabled. Connect the correct power cable to receive traffic service”. After a fruitless exchange of emails with Garmin - I returned unit to Halfords where I exchanged with a basic model. Not entirely happy - would have preferred an exchange with a comparable model - but you pays your money and take a chance!

Mount @ £4.49, and they said they were going to give you the charger?
A standard USB lead is fine. Surely you've one lying about? I've half a dozen here. You can buy them in pound shops.
So £80.49 compared to £140?
Each to their own, but i know what i'd have done.

Yes but once you count all the extras in mount, charger, usb lead, d-link lead its about £100 in already. and new is £140 about or bit less. Going to get new instead.

Yes, the one you need ends in "80" not "50".

Ebay is your friend. You can get one from £4.49 delivered.
You did well. If I'd been offered a brand new 2569 over an ex-display model I'd probably have taken it too. I think the only differences between the units are the mapping and that the 2599 has voice command.

I hope they can supply it - it's the TA10 cable you need for the 2599. It can be had for £10 on ebay if Halfords can't supply; in that case try and get them to give you a discount as it's an incomplete unit, then you can put that towards purchasing the correct cable elsewhere.

I have a pretty good connection speed but using garmin express it hung on 13% for ages with no activity so I gave up and tried again - this time I selected to download to a folder on my desktop. It completed the download at much faster speed in around 20 mins and I have a folder named "City Navigator Europe NTU 2017.10.gmap" (4.65GB). I'm now using the Garmin MapInstaller to send this to the unit and it currently says "Building index files" 30% complete with 40 mins remaining.

A factory reset will not erase any map, go into the ''map and vehicle'' in the settings and scroll down to ''mymaps'' and make sure your map has a green tick next to it

We've an incredibly crap broadband connection and its proposing taking 13.7 hours to download. Frankly ridiculous that companies think its ok to dump these massively big files down via crap links at their end and on the assumption that everyone is running fast broadband and that they're happy to leave their satnav connected the whole time (which is what it tells you to do.
I even let it run overnight and its STILL only 10% through...

When I picked up my 2599LMT-d it was obviously store demo as it was covered in fingerprints and giving it a quick look over it had a few local postcodes stored in the recent destinations. I hope I haven't done anything wrong but in my haste I clicked the reset thinking it would just clear all previous routes and history but looks like it's factory reset and no longer shows any map installed. I've downloaded the garmin express software which detected some updates and a map and is currently downloading / updating maps (around 7.2GB) which, according to the progress bar, is painfully slow at around 1MB/s with a current estimate time of around 2hrs.

I picked up second unit with traffic updates.
This was set up as a demo unit, as it was in demo mode, and plastic film had been removed from screen.
Had a look over it and not a single mark or scratch, very happy with it.
Thanks again op

It is pretty easy to get into the hidden folder on the Garmin and you can delete unwanted language files etc to free up space, you can even remove the original map once you start downloading the update freeing up a few gb's and allowing the new map to install seamlessly

Not such a good experience for me - reservered the 58lm at my local, went to collect after an hour and waited forever while they searched the store for it. Eventually found the sadest looking unit I'd ever seen, dented scratched and covered in sticky marks and bits of plastic. Checkout guy then told me that I could have the charger and suction cup from another unit, but there was no instructions, CD software or box. Not impressed - didn't buy it and saved my £55. I'd been expecting a bit of wear to the unit, but nothing like that amount of damage. Really annoying as I need a new satnav! Well done everyone that managed to get one, maybe I'm just unlucky this time :disappointed:

Can't comment on all models but the Nuvi 2599 has 8GB internal memory which is just enough to store the Full European mapping and related software. I think its when you start adding custom POI markers and additional voices (which optionally can be downloaded from the Garmin Express software) that will take up more space hence the need for additional storage.
If you're not interested in the additional stuff then it's pretty much fine to use on its own but given how cheap Micro SD cards are these days I guess it doesn't hurt to bump it up a bit if needed.
il_capo
19 Apr 16#57
I was surprised I managed to update the maps without being asked to insert a Memory Card, as has invariably happened on previous Garmin devices when I've tried to update European maps. Does anyone know how much internal capacity is on it?

Picked up mine earlier. Came in original box, with sat nav, car charger, USB cable, wrapped leaflets/booklets, and as the box has a label saying free case (stuck on), got a separate Garmin universal 5" carrying case off the shelf too.
There was a lot of walking round the store to gather the bits together - the sat nav itself came off the display (literally still on display), box came from the back of the store, and the two halves of the stand came from different places.
The battery seems to last for just about half an hour, so seems to have had some burn time. Halfords guy estimated it's been on display for about a year.
panther12
19 Apr 16#52
Yes it is a TA10 power cable that they supplied. I think the store guy was confussed and didn't realise that this unit has the receiver built in so hopefully it'll work with supplied charger. I'm just going through the updates at moment so will try it out in the car tomorrow.
pgilc1
19 Apr 16#51
Its not an optional extra, it should come with it.
The charger you need is a TA10 and can be bought on ebay for £9.99 delivered.
Still worth it IMHO

19 Apr 16#50
I can confirm the Garmin Smartphone Link app (free on IOS & Android) works great with the 2569LMT-D - I get live traffic, weather and can make and receive phone calls etc when connected via bluetooth to my LG G3 mobile. Can also get live traffic via TA10 charger lead (but suspect this will be a slower connection using DAB).

Thanks OP for the deal, picked up an ex-display 2599 LMT-D with box and all the accessories for £75. I heard from the sales assistant that some people either returned or refused some of these ex-display Garmin units because it was in the store's "Demo Mode" and didn't know how to get out of it so they missed out!
For those who don't know just put it in the car and use it for a bit, it takes a few minutes but the sat nav will then pick up that it's moving and turn off the store demo mode and acts like a normal sat nav after!
panther12
19 Apr 16#46
Thanks, I will have a look. I've not tried it in the car yet but the car socket adaptor that he gave me is a Garmin and says on the back "TA10 car charger". The Halfords guy was saying that to get traffic alerts I would need to buy a separate car charger and showed me one similar that had a power jack port to connect a separate box and antenna for the live traffic?
il_capo
19 Apr 16#45
It's definitely not an "optional extra" as all units are supplied with it in the box. I would contact customer service and ask them to send you the correct TA10 cable. If you don't need traffic I'd get a cheaper LM model
Tomb
19 Apr 16#44
I think it gets the traffic via the power / charging cable which acts as the antenna.
Check out one of the unboxing YouTube videos which should clarify.

19 Apr 16#43
Is the 2599LMT D still a good buy for £75 without the traffic cable? I got one from my local branch, was ex-display but they rummaged around for the box, charger & data cable to connect to pc but insisted that the cable for the traffic was an optional extra that I would need to purchase separate. Didn't know what to do so bought it anyway but I'll get onto customer service if it should have been supplied with one.

The guy in the shop said TA10 (Traffic Antenna 10) cable is the correct one, but I haven't tried it yet! It has yellow LED, the other (non-compatible) cable looks identical but has a green LED - probably the one you've currently got?
Just finished updating mine via Garmin Connect software on laptop, took about 40 mins total (with memory 32GB memory card installed). I think you can also get live traffic via the Garmin Smartphone Link app (available for Android and IOS).

I have been using a Nuvicam for months, it is very good and it doesn't have to be fitted in the middle of the windscreen screen it has options for left, right or center in the settings, I used mine on a 2,000 mile USA road trip (after adding USA maps) and it was faultless and if you google nuvicam reviews they are nearly all positive

That's not good. Both the 2569s I bought today had leads etc missing, but I managed to persuade them to take correct leads (TA10 + USB) and mounts from a box of stuff they had lying around. My backup plan was to try negotiate a discount so I could buy the leads.

sorry for being a idiot but what's the different between 2569lmt and the 2599lmt.

The Nuvicam doesn't have very good reviews and there are plenty of better dashcam options out there. Personally, if I wanted a dashcam I'd use something like a SJ4000 which is only about £40 new and has a very wide lens plus films in 1080p. You can use your SJ4000 for other things too - e.g. cycling (comes with all the mounts, and that's what I use mine for), holidays, etc.
I am glad you're happy with your 3599 too - box/packaging is irrelevant to me. However, do check the vehicle power cable they gave you picks up the traffic signal. If the cable came from the box of another LMT-D device you should be fine, but do check to make sure.

Got an old Navman from 2009 gathering dust with European maps loaded. We're off to Spain/France on a driving trip this summer so I was going to update the maps. However am tempted with this deal because of new tech and also because of the free maps for life (which Navman didn't do on our purchase). Not up on Satnavs these days so unsure what to do.....buy one of these baby's or update the maps on my Navman?

On the 2599lmt-d and the 2569lmt-d the traffic is built into the unit - it gets the traffic through a DAB signal and does not need an internet connection.
With Garmin models LM = lifetime maps. LMT = lifetime maps and traffic. LMT-D = lifetime maps and digital traffic.

The 2599lmt-d for £75 include map and traffic updates. I updated my maps fine after purchase.
The argument in favour of using a phone is strong if your mobile screen is large enough (mine isn't), you're happy using a data connection for traffic info, and you find a free satnav app that does as good a job as navigating you as a dedicated device. I'd rather use a tablet with a 7" or larger screen for navigation than a phone.
