There are 2 fans and they can get noisy when it starts to heat up. Saying that even though it gets noisy, the temp isn't as high, its just that there are 2 fans making noise. I use it for gaming and it's pretty good. only peeve is the trackpad but i use my mouse anyway

I must've been lucky then! Delivery was meant to be the 18th, but details didn't update via the tracking link.. The laptop actually arrived on the 15th, essentially 3 days early! Was a rather awesome surprise!

Syncreon tracking is still showing 'departed manu.facility' for me since the 13th. ETA is still 19th but I don't know if that's for arrival to the UK or my doorstep...
How soon did your tracking update and was the ETA delivery to your door?

Good skills  - oh to be a student again! Ended up getting the i7-6700hq, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, QHD version ..Arrived yesterday which was very fast delivery too..Looks amazing .. The bezel is so slim it's ridiculous!
Can confirm it's really quiet too..Going to install Steam and check out a few games this weekend at some point but just general browsing/internet is super smooth... I'm really impressed

Careful though as once you enter the code it's registered as being used and cannot be used again even if you don't complete checkout or want to go back and change the spec.

not a bad discount...i thought i was trying to be clever and build a direct link with a dell sales guy, email address etc for any queries and so forth but he couldnt get near outlet prices or better the outlet price. so i just ended up using the 15% student discount lol.

I swear HUKD is going to make be bankrupt... Was debating between this and the XPS 15... Took the plunge.. ordered an XPS, though this is still a damn good deal!... XPS is in production at the moment...! Dammit lol..
Btw to anyone else considering buying a laptop from Dell.. Speak to a Dell sales rep via their online chat.... managed to get 7% off... I think that's pretty standard but still, could save a few quid! Don't just go and say "can i have a discount" though obviously!

Keep an eye on pricespy.co.uk, if you go through it choosing your... criteria (so computers, components, hard drives, ssd then tick the m.2 box and set the size) you'll get a pretty accurate idea of prices. It doesn't know about voucher deals (as it's just webcrawling) but I picked up a 512GB evo 850 m.2 (open box) for £110
That and another 8GB stick have got the laptop basically set for the next year or 2. The wife's a gamer but a bit less demanding.
There is an option in 'update and security' to revert back to windows 7. You could do that, then try updating to windows 10 again. It is pretty straight forward I believe .
Yes it is a very nice step up, the build quality of the new xps's are amazing and I love the thin bezels! Although saying that, the inspiron is an absolute tank and has withstood a lot of knocks and bumps over the past and a few drops!

i dont know why but its become so frustrating to use this n7110. still i need the xps from a performance perspective but it would be nice to have this working properly.
p.s how you finding your xps? must be such a huge difference in build quality for a start?
any guides around on how one would fit an m2 ssd to this particular machine?

I can't be accurate I'm afraid as i do all sorts while on it but general browsing etc lasts hours. Sometime I keep looking at it expecting to plug in and it's nowhere near low. Having an ssd helps though.

I have recently gone from a n7110 (i7-2630qm) to a xps 9350, however my inspiron feels incredibly fast after a clean install of windows 10. It was never a slouch but boot up times have drastically improved and general useage seems considerably more snappy. Maybe try a clean install?

andrewborland182
10 Apr 16#79
That model is an MSI barebones, all of their notebooks are rebrands (mostly Sager/Clevo). Quality should be A1 but bareboners (yeah, that's what they are known as) sometimes get poor bios/ec/driver support from MSI. However I have an MSI GT72 and can't fault it.
ganon
10 Apr 16#78
Yea I think if I buy ssd elsewhere it'll cheaper than their package?
So cyberfang is MSI rebadge? This means the build quality should be decent right?
andrewborland182

Nice rebadged MSI GE60/2, but gaming off a HDD vs SSD? Pro's and con's to both. GTX970m definitely better for eye candy
andrewborland182
10 Apr 161#76
Edit: Seen your post above @ganon
No it's not. Try not to mislead. If anyone google searches the graphics card in these laptops being discussed one of the 1st sites to come up will be notebookcheck, they provide indepth analysis of each card, frequently in different laptops from different manufacturers.
The GTX960m is the lowest card that will manage 1080p settings at entry level frames per second (30) on some but hardly all games.
If you are considering buying a notebook for gaming, check the independent sites, not the ones trying to sell you the notebook.
I started with a GT630m, GTX765m, GTX870m and now GTX980m and even my 980m with a decent i7 and 16GB RAM will struggle at ultra settings in some games (however beats a few desktop GTX970's on firestrike - http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/10136433)
ganon
10 Apr 16#75
Lol my bad I meant 970m. Thanks for that spec but this is better.

andrewborland182 to ganon
10 Apr 16#72
That's not a great card for gaming, unplayable at 1080p, medium settings @ 30-40fps if you're lucky on recent AAA games. The GTX960m is entry level for gaming on a laptop unless you are playing old/not graphically demanding games.
You can get the following at pc.co.uk for £880 (NO OPERATING SYSTEM though).
15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)

If you want to use the GPU for video encoding you will need a software that supports the CUDA available on the 960M.
Not everyone uses a laptop - even a powerful one - for gaming.
ShaolinPunk
10 Apr 16#67
Might be able to provide a link regarding video editing if that's what you were asking? This might help.. Linus is pretty damn knowledgeable in all things PC/hardware related & does produce some very good reviews.. in this one he's asked if you can do 4K video editing on an ultrabook.. bear in mind that the graphics card used is a discrete laptop GPU & they're using the GoPro cineform codec...
Cheers for the info. If anyone can offer advice in relation to a couple of questions I had at the bottom of page 3, I'd be most grateful :o) (ps, I realise I can search the internet for info but usually pretty knowledgeable people on here).

Unbelievable value this. I was tempted but ended up going for a fully loaded xps 9550 for £1147 saving a packet with 15% student discount code. Should be a nice change after owning a few inspirons already. My N7110 has become almost unusable with Windows 10 (even with 16gb ram and 256gb SSD) for even internet browsing plus the battery has failed.

I'm not sure how regular it is, i've seen a few price drops over the years and a few articles quote it as a good time to buy a laptop (that, black Friday, back to school (aug/sept) and a few other times) .. Even if it's £50-60 off it's still worth it seeing as we're in April now.. Afaik it has something to do with a number of Japanese companies and their fiscal years ending in April, as well as new product launches, so previous generation models are discounted to make room for the newer ones..
danielUK84
10 Apr 16#62
True, but no one is going to buy this for that reason, you cant even game on a laptop on the battery without dropping a lot of frames and it would eat it very quickly. Better off with a U version if battery is a concern.
ShaolinPunk
10 Apr 16#60
I've had my eyes on the XPS-15 for awhile now, as the InfinityEdge display is amazing & it has very, very good specs.. however this is around a grand cheaper! .. I'm really tempted by this....
Main criteria is ultraportability & a slim form-factor (I've had the larger workstation replacements & they're too much to cart around every day on planes/trains/automobiles lol) .. and ability to run on-the-go VM/Dev environments .. The odd game would be good but i'm mainly after having something very light, and very fast.. Also look at the theoretical 'price drop' that happens around April & seeing if there'll be any deals around in the next few weeks?

Hi, I was also considering a laptop that plays Skylines so good to know. If however I decided to stick to games like AntiChamber, and some PC only indies (I have a PS4 also), would this laptop be a bit of overkill in the graphics department? I'd like to pay less than this if possible for a decent(ish) all rounder with a bit of gaming on the side. Cheers for any info.

The 960m is similar in performance to a desktop 750ti.
danroberts2
10 Apr 16#55
Looking at the answers I personally wouldn't take any advice from that post - 1 guy saying the 960m is the same as the desktop 960... He couldn't be more wrong. I can't say if it'd make a difference due to the fact I can't run a comparison - nor find any relatable posts except for like you've found, people hypothesising. All I know is, you could still get a 256GB m.2 SSD and install it yourself saving you money on the ASUS, but if you can't be bother with that hassle then for ~£25 extra just get the Asus

I'll have to have a look later and see. I'm sure viewing angles are really good if my memory serves me well.
I have the 4k touch screen version of this with a 240gb m.2 drive. Great gaming laptop apart from the random resets (whea_uncorrectable_error) I think it's the Intel gfx drivers but can't be sure. Never get a reset in a game using the nvidia card.

Surprising how few Non Apple laptops have no vents on underside.

This is an excellent machine for the price but I'm holding off getting a new one this year. The reason is that we're not that far away from market releases of new standards in CPU, GPU and SSD. Some of which are genuinely big upgrades on the current tech. I'm looking at next January if my current (ageing) XPS17 can hold on.
danroberts2
10 Apr 16#49
I can imagine the ASUS is a 2GB Graphics card, whereas the Dell is a 4GB card. I spent a lot of time searching and I couldn't find anything which matched the price:performance ratio of the 7559, hence I bought one. Plus what did help was that I got 10% off too, but even then I never factored that in when comparing laptops and it still came out on top.

10 Apr 16#48
It has an anti-glare screen does it not? The disadvantage of that is that the colours are slightly less vivid. The advantage is obvious to anyone who has used a glossy screen. If the colours vary with viewing angle, that indicates a poor quality screen.

My aging desktop has started to niggle and I'm thinking of replacing.
Dell Studio 540 (Quad cpu 2.33ghz, 4gb RAM, 916gb HDD) vista and I'm using the onboard graphics since the replacement graphics card expired.
I use it for web and storing/editing music files and for online TV. Rarely any gaming.

This Dell laptop has higher specs than my desktop - is it a suitable replacement?
Could I plug into the TV?

I'm right in saying this doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 port and there are fans/vents on the underside? Could live without TB3 but the fans on the bottom kill it - I loath having to muck about with a cooling pad with my older Dell Inspiron.

Nice to see my Dell 7559 still in market. Excellent Laptop for playing games like GTA 5 , League of Legends, CS GO, Battlefield , Witcher 3 , Need for speed Latest are personally tested and played in very decent FPS rate which is playable without hassle so don't need to worry about that. Build is pretty aggressive but it is made of light material and 1080 standard screen is OK (DOES THE JOB). HEATING is not an issue have 2 fans at the bottom with 3 vents on top and side. Noise is not an issue as if you are playing a heavy game on laptop the fan should roar so expect that from a LAPTOP. ONE SCREW access to hard drive, ram , battery and wlan card.(comes with an extra M2 drive slot). Personal experience a very good laptop in this price range WORTH BUYING!!

It also has a sub speaker in the bottom so the music etc can easy negate the fans. I also find ince it settles in a game the fans wind down and settle too.

There are 2 fans and they can get noisy when it starts to heat up. Saying that even though it gets noisy, the temp isn't as high, its just that there are 2 fans making noise. I use it for gaming and it's pretty good. only peeve is the trackpad but i use my mouse anyway

I have been looking for a gaming laptop that i can also use for netflix etc. What is the display for anyone who has one of these? And is it suitable for gaming (cod, gta etc)? Thanks

I have this laptop last time the deal came up, if you contact dell over the phone/online chat they will offer you it for £694.** - personally preferred to get it directly from the retailer. I have add a 256gb m.2 SSD and its a beast. Perfect for my needs which is non demanding gaming - LoL etc. Definitely worth the money, i was searching for a long time for a laptop and don't believe there is anything else around this price point for the spec. As comment above says keyboard is a bit bouncy however personally this gives me no issues at all.

How is gaming with this laptop? Fan noise etc.

That's 100 pounds more remember.
As for this laptop. I have it myself and paid 640 for a refurb from eBay which was immaculate.
There is as stated an extra ram and m. 2 slot which I filled with a recent deal from kikatek with 120gb ssd. The machine flies and I couldn't be happier with it.
You have to watch the screens on these though. Mine is the worse panel and colours are not perfect but still very good.
I can try to field. Other questions if people have them.

The tracking kicked in today en route from Lutterworth now.. Should be with me tomorrow
Has yours arrived yet?
Syncreon tracking is still showing 'departed manu.facility' for me since the 13th. ETA is still 19th but I don't know if that's for arrival to the UK or my doorstep...
How soon did your tracking update and was the ETA delivery to your door?
Can confirm it's really quiet too..Going to install Steam and check out a few games this weekend at some point but just general browsing/internet is super smooth... I'm really impressed
Yiu then get a 15% coupon via email within 30mins.
Careful though as once you enter the code it's registered as being used and cannot be used again even if you don't complete checkout or want to go back and change the spec.
Advertised through twitter page:http://www.dell.com/learn/uk/en/ukdfh1/campaigns/dell-outlet-exclusive-offers-uk?c=uk&l=en&s=dfh&CID=279686&LID=5567366&DGC=SM&DGSeg=ARB&RED=301&ACD=25789221108496267
not a bad discount...i thought i was trying to be clever and build a direct link with a dell sales guy, email address etc for any queries and so forth but he couldnt get near outlet prices or better the outlet price. so i just ended up using the 15% student discount lol.
mine took 3 days to ship. estimated delivery now showing 19th, previously 25th.
This and cant wait for my Kef references 3.2's!!!
Btw to anyone else considering buying a laptop from Dell.. Speak to a Dell sales rep via their online chat.... managed to get 7% off... I think that's pretty standard but still, could save a few quid! Don't just go and say "can i have a discount" though obviously!
Expected arrival date 27th April, RIP!!! :disappointed:
My xps has just shipped today.... Eagerly awaiting it!
Thought they used to come from Ireland lol
That and another 8GB stick have got the laptop basically set for the next year or 2. The wife's a gamer but a bit less demanding.
Edit: Here's a 512GB X400 stick for £110:
http://www.ebuyer.com/743762-sandisk-x400-512gb-m-2-2280-ssd-sd8sn8u-512g-1122
Yes it is a very nice step up, the build quality of the new xps's are amazing and I love the thin bezels! Although saying that, the inspiron is an absolute tank and has withstood a lot of knocks and bumps over the past and a few drops!
i dont know why but its become so frustrating to use this n7110. still i need the xps from a performance perspective but it would be nice to have this working properly.
p.s how you finding your xps? must be such a huge difference in build quality for a start?

don't know how "refurbished" they are, something to think about though.
edit - only a 2gb gpu, still the 960m though, unsure how this would affect price on a new model, mibbes not quite the saving??

I'd say battery life is good. Better than anything I've Ever had
I think I will go for this spec in a week or after returning the Asus back to Amazon.
So cyberfang is MSI rebadge? This means the build quality should be decent right?

You can get the following at pc.co.uk for £880 (NO OPERATING SYSTEM though).
15.6" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Intel® Core™ i7 Quad Core Processor 6700HQ (2.6GHz, 3.5GHz Turbo)
8GB HyperX IMPACT 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 (1 x 8GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 965M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 12
1TB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm)
256GB SAMSUNG SM951 M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 2150MB/R, 1260MB/W)

For example DVDFab Blu-Ray copy has a "Designed for NVIDIA CUDA" logo. Although you would have to search software for your specific needs.

Heat!

Surprising how few Non Apple laptops have no vents on underside.
Dell Studio 540 (Quad cpu 2.33ghz, 4gb RAM, 916gb HDD) vista and I'm using the onboard graphics since the replacement graphics card expired.
I use it for web and storing/editing music files and for online TV. Rarely any gaming.
I plug my desktop into a HD TV as a monitor and would want to do the same.
This Dell laptop has higher specs than my desktop - is it a suitable replacement?
Could I plug into the TV?
Thanks
It has an hdmi out so no problem there but Tbh I stream from it to the TV via some sort of wireless. Chrome cast or built in smart TV etc.
Looking for something that can handle high end music software as well as a bit of gaming. For the former, it really needs to be portably in the sense that I can put it down anywhere and still get the best out of it.
I added 8GB as the laptop comes with a single 8GB chip and i added a Samsung 850 EVO SSD(M2 2280 - width 22mm length 80mm)
Can anybody help me to identify what screen my laptop has, its 1080p version but i understand the laptop can come with different panels?
It's a bit more expensive than what I paid and currently not the top rated cooler anymore. At the time it was top rated and cheaper so may better alternatives.
P.S Customer service is ok and responsive to your issues although they are based in PhillipiInes :/

Great machine and not much to beat it for the price...
The touchpad is a bit sensitive and the plastic fins on the rear are delicate but other than that it's a great laptop.
Probably even going back to diabolo 2 hah
Glad it runs at nice rates.
On the usb c front that's a nice addition but not a breaker for me. If you have the extra hundred though I'm sure you can snag a 670m gpu or maybe better? I'm not massively clued up atm.
It also has a sub speaker in the bottom so the music etc can easy negate the fans. I also find ince it settles in a game the fans wind down and settle too.

Seems the same spec wise? I need it for Street Fighter V primarily and specs here seem the same. I have the Asus on order.
