Anything better around from decathlon etc or is this best bang for buck for the spec

I'd always get decathlon for their unbeatable warranty. good price and spec here though

I am getting a bike to put in my car and commute from park and ride also some cycling in the park with my daughter I was looking at the carrera crossfire 2 as it's hybrid I am told would be a good choice or would this be better seems it's the same price

Remember there is no lockout on the fork for climbing those hills and no hydraulic brakes , apart from that nice wee bike

Excellent find, heat added. Very good entry level spec. They are manual disc brakes, but for the price it looks great value, tempted.........

Recommend you ride any new bike before buying it, dare I say it, test a few different bikes to see which you prefer? RRP on this is just silly but aren't they all.

Terrible reviews on the brakes, to the point they are dangerous.
I had the much more widely praised BB7 mechanical discs on my road bike, nightmare. Had to go hydro in the end, granted they cost as much as this entire bike.

Seems a higher spec, and cheaper, than the equivalent Decathlon Rockrider 520. Don't expect much other than bounce from the fork, there's no rebound adjust - but it'll get some of the bumps soaked up at least.
Well-maintained mechanical disc brakes are fine. I've had something similar to these Tektros on a Carrera Gryphon some time ago, without issue. I've also been running Avid BB7s on a commuter for 3 years. If you want to upgrade, you can get a set of hydraulic discs from chain reaction for £70: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-db5-disc-brake/rp-prod120146.
Always been a fan on Carrera bikes, you just have to make sure they're set up properly. Take it to your local bike shop, or learn how by watching a few YouTube vids.

You're moving close to second hand car money at this price, so cold. Plus then you don't annoy paying road users by getting in their way!

29 Apr 16#25
Regarding brakes: Avid BB7's can be had brand new for less than £40 on eBay. I seriously wouldn't bother with any other mechanical brakes (maybe TRP Spyres?). Reason is that on all other brakes the fixed pad cannot be adjusted, meaning that you either have to put up with rubbish braking after a few miles or adjust them closer to the disc. On the BB7's both pads can be wound in and out, making adjusting for wear a 5 second job.
RRP is a joke as ever but decent bike for the money + the 22% off trick as ever with halfords deals. Heat.
It was made slightly easier because there was a 10% off bikes code kicking around anyway but I think that's expired now

It does make me wonder if HUKD sponsor/pay for b*ll-end comments like we've seen a couple of above.
Clearly these people have too much spare time on their hands that they are prepared to post in deals they have no interest in. Best to ignore.
My son has this bike already and this is a cracking deal - hot.

I'd recommend that if you're going buy a bike, then look at terrain or places you're going be using on first.
Then look at budget for you have and speak to expert, or possible independent shop to get more advise.
I would only purchase Specialize myself, either road or off road, have one of each, wouldn't touch anything else, you pay for quality and expect the best with specialize, never let me down through 5 x triathlons and some off road adventure racing, or just for leisure with the other half, Top bikes - Specialize!!

Do you know if i have to wait for the discount card from the toyotaownersclub? it says "Halfords Discount Card" on their website
this bike might not be for sale after waiting for the post
No reason why you need to spend that much here though, Deores are more than enough for the bikes capabilities and they can be had for under £70 a set. Would be the most worthwhile upgrade to this bike for sure.

Voted hot. Though I don't think there's much point buying an off road bike in this price range. It won't be very good for safe and fun off road riding. And will be slow and heavy for road or commuting.

You don't want front suspension for that - adds weight for no real benefit.
Are you sure a normal bike will fit in your car? If so you'll still want a light one for lugging in and out.

Great little bike! I brought one from a deal on here a few years ago after not cycling for 10 + years and enjoyed it so much i sold it after 2 years with hardly any loss and upgraded to a full suspension! Was a awesome first bike and never gave me any problems! Well worth the money in my opinion if your looking to get back into cycling!

I get an impression you dont know much about bikes.
Think heavy useless fork, wheels, knobby tyres.

You forgot about taking the bike on to a train at peak hour, when the train is rammed like a Japanese tube train and tutting, sighing because people are in their way. That really grinds my gears.

most of the bike's made using aluminium, nothing wrong with the wheels, the fork might add some weight but it makes the bike look good :sunglasses: and it's good for curbs/ pot holes (less chance of breaking your kneck or buckling the front wheel)
if you are on and offroad you can buy some hybrid tyres that are a bit better for tarmac but still grip in the wet when offroad, road bikes are dangerous if you ask me
This is a light bike, i have felt the weight myself
"I get an impression you dont know much about bikes" well i get the impression that you are a bike snob :stuck_out_tongue:
I have to admire the effort you put into proving a point. Not sure what point that is though.
If you're saying the bike is light because you felt it, that's great. Objectively 13.5kg (if you believe the quoted figure, which I don't) for a cheapo MTB isn't bad. But in my opinion unnecessarily heavy.
If you think road bikes are dangerous, that's your opinion. I think what's really dangerous is cheap MTBs when taken onto off road trails. So why bother buying a cheap MTB, if you're not going to use it off road?
Not sure where you got the bike snob from. Experienced cyclist doesn't have to be a snob.

I thought it was obvious that it was my opinion when i said "if you ask me" :smirk: (when i said road bikes i was talking about racing bikes btw)
You use words like cheapo when describing a £250ish bike and you sound obsessed about the weight
do you think that the £500 boardman hybrid bike: 11.2kg (2.6kg lighter, just over 2 bags of sugar) is twice the bike? becuse it's more than double the price
What kind of bike would you buy?
i hope i'm not coming across as argumentative, i was just surprised when i saw your heavy comment when the frame is alloy

Switch the seat to one of these, always fit these, reliable and comfy once you get used to being back on the bike.
Last bike was a Scott Voltage YZ3, might take the seat off that instead.

I went in for some roof rails and saw this. Ordered at the price and just mentioned British Cycling card (no jobsworths at this store unlike the sh1t service from Dumfries!) for 10% off. Will order £170 (£190)of gift voucher. No Quidco as ordered instore but hey a good price and great kids bike!

Are you trying to come across as a total moron OR a smarty pants? This is under £250 - specialized price fix so never sell bikes anywhere near this price. I have a Rockhopper but would never spout the nonsense you have spouted re the audience. Why did you either enter the thread? Were you casting out your line and caught me?

Just saying that you can get some Specialized Road Bikes for less than £250 if you look hard enough, I managed to secure a 2015 Specialized Road Bike for £200, just had slight scratch on the frame, but was brilliant in the Triathlon I did in London in 2016. Not a smarty pants, just always looks for bike that suits your needs and budget, do your homework, shop around and your find a deal that suits you. Other Triathletes and Ironmen and Iron ladies I know in my group also had Specialized bikes some more than £250, but others under!! Bargains are out there if you look, always worth asking the shop if they have any ex-demo models they are willing to sell off!!
