BT8500 Home Phone with Enhanced Call Blocker (Includes BT's Call Guardian to Block up to 100 per cent of Nuisance Calls)
The BT8500 DECT home phone puts you back in control by allowing you to choose the calls you want to take and those you want to block. Call Guardian means that any caller not on your contact list or already blocked is required to announce their name prior to getting through, allowing you to choose which calls to accept or reject.
Quality Built-in
Designed in UK, the BT8500 has an enhanced design that makes this phone an addition to any room whilst only taking up less space. The phone also offers you a 1.8 inch full-graphic seven-line easy-to-read colour screen - see instantly how many voice messages, missed calls or text messages you have. The screen has also been designed to be large enough for easy text messaging. The BT8500 has enhanced sound quality, meaning you won't miss a word of your calls or messages. The durable, backlit buttons are easy to see any time of day.
Easy to Use
With the BT8500 you can save up to 200 contacts. All these contacts are automatically copied to all of your handsets. You can also see a list of who's called you, who has left a voice message, and then choose which message to listen to first. This phone also comes with outgoing call control, allowing you to prevent any surprises on your bill by PIN protecting calls to Mobile, International, Premium Rate numbers, or even all outgoing calls. This can also be useful for elderly relatives who may generate large call costs unknowingly. Never miss a call with the call waiting feature - the BT8500's screen shows you who's trying to get through and, at the press of a button, you can switch to the other call or reject it. We've also made it easy to divert calls to your mobile or other numbers when you are away from home. If you want to have a three way call the BT8500 helps you get it set up in a few simple steps.
Are you sure it was an accident?! :stuck_out_tongue:

Enhanced Call Blocking Features
Block by number, type or Do not Disturb. You can block 1000 individual numbers and you can choose the type of calls you want to block such as mobile, international, withheld, unknown or payphone numbers. You can even block numbers by area code or suffix. For those times when you just want some peace and quiet, switch on Do Not Disturb so that your phone won't ring or light up. If you want key friends and family to still get through they can do, by tagging them as VIPs in your address book.
I've got the quad set of this phone, it's great and you can set up how you want to deal with the various call types

Yes, you can, but only effectively blocks calls if you have caller ID, essential for proper operation with these. We have a virgin line, managed to get caller ID for free out of Virgin after complaining we were getting so many nuisance calls, and have had a twin pack of these now for the past 8 months and it has blocked all nuisance calls.

I'm with virgin and have these and confirm they work; however virgin charge you £2 a month for caller ID.

On the phone I have at the moment you can give withheld numbers a silent ringtone so when the cold callers ring you don't hear it ringing so don't answer. As a result you get removed from cold calling lists because you never answer rather than being added to more when you do.

When I was with virgin I was paying for caller ID then I found out my neighbour was getting their's for free, I called up to complain and they said depending on geographical location some costumes get it for free, when I told them someone in my street was getting it for free they added a discount to my account and refunded what I had paid. I wish I'd bought these phones sooner as the landline was just an annoyance ringing frequently with cold callers and meant I rarely bothered answering the phone. Now the phone rarely rings and when it does it's worth answering as it's likely a genuine call. It does take a bit of time to set up the contact book to allow known callers through and there are occasional issues with genuine automated callers being blocked such as the automatic verification system Halifax use however the Call Guardian feature can be temporarily disabled for that.

Certainly the tech was one of the best to come out of Dragons Den.
"BT launches phone that incorporates trueCall technology
Today BT formally launched their new flagship phone - the BT8500. This is the first phone to incorporate trueCall technology. The BT8500 offers four call handling options - 'Allow', 'Block with Zap message', 'Whisper+' and 'Send to answering machine'. While the trueCall Call Blocker, trueCall Care, and trueCall Vi units offer many additional features, the BT8500 will reach a wider market and will help tens of thousands of people control the calls they are receiving"

18 Apr 16#55
Bought these ages ago - best phone we've ever had to stop nuisance calls. Added all our contacts into the directory - set them all as 'VIP' and then set phone to 'do not disturb' but to allow calls from VIP numbers. Bingo! Now the only calls that get through (phone rings) are from people we know. Anyone else gets the answer machine - if it's important they'll leave a message and we can call back. Even better this can be set up by time of day - so if you don't mind other calls in the daytime this feature can be set just to cut in during evening/night.

Do you get annoyed when you fill in a form and have to enter your phone number even when you know that the company doesn’t really need it?
What are they going to do with it? Who will they give it to?
Your privacy is valuable – protect your phone number with trueCall38!
The solution: enter our phone number 0333 88 88 88 88 (that’s three threes, eight eights) as your phone number, and if, or rather when, they call, those cold call culprits will hear our short but sweet recorded message:-
"trueCall38 is handling my calls. I prefer not to be contacted
by phone, so please contact me via my email address.

Maybe it is just my set, but I find that sometimes you push the buttons and you don't get a line to make a call, or you have entered the number and then pushed to dial and then it doesn't just refreshes to the main screen again. I had some old Siemens ones which were excellent and compared to that (which alas the microphone died on them which would cost more to repair then a new set) I found these to replace. Debating, might actually return them for a refund.

We’re launching a "breakthrough" new service aimed at diverting millions of nuisance calls.
Now a BT team will monitor calls to our 10 million domestic customers and identify any patterns of callers.
The "rogue" numbers will be diverted to a junk voicebox, which we estimate will affect up to 25 million unwanted calls a week.
If you’re a BT customer, you’ll also be able to divert the calls yourself to the "Blacklist".
The service will launch later this year, harnessing huge computer power to analyse data.
John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said: "Nuisance calls are one of the great annoyances of modern life.

Simple handsets to use, hold charge well when not on cradle, clear displays, relatively large buttons easier for older people (who are possibly more vulnerable to nuisance calls)
On the first week I had them it blocked (correctly) 12 nuisance calls - mainly International numbers.
It does confuse genuine callers who you haven't added slightly as it's automated announcement asks for their name, but it's great to have this service. Your phone doesn't even ring until the non-identified caller has responded with their name.

19 Apr 161#131
What happens is the 8500 will pick up the line after one ring if you've set it to do so. For example, I have it set to allow all mobile/payphone numbers and any in my contact list through, but everything else gets challenged by the 8500 (at which point their robo-diallers hangup).
Minor problem with this setup: the 8500 doesn't ring at all for numbers it's challenging, but your other phones will for a single ring - a little irritating. It's better to have 8500s replacing all your phones, so you never even hear the cold callers ringing at all.

Good price but as I mentioned on your latest post which has been removed these will drop lower soon - I can almost guarantee it

Bought these the other day for my parents but haven't got a chance to setting up properly. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I've found so far:
- private numbers can be blocked. They don't go through the "TrueCall" system, they just get flat out rejected and the caller just gets a message saying the recipient isn't accepting private phone numbers
- looks like by default it blacklists everything and you have to whitelist each number you want to allow. This is a major problem for my parents who receive a lot of landline calls, including for numbers that aren't in the phonebook. Nor is it practical to add every number they want to whitelist to the phonebook. Due to this I just ended up disabling the call filtering. Would have been nice to whitelist everything and then blacklist any known nuisance callers.
- I bought the trio set for £59.99 which seemed to tie in with this deal (£20 per handset)
- from what I'm told the handsets are comfortable with decent volume for normal conversation
I'm hoping to go through the options in more detail when I get the chance but so far it seems like they're decent handsets but doesn't seem like they'll be the end of nuisance calls for my parents

Today Derek called me from The Special Accident Helpline.
Derek: Hello Sir I'm from the special accident helpline, can I ask have you had any accidents recently for example in the last 12 months?
Me: Well Derek today is literally your lucky day, I've had an accident in my pants and I'd be oh so glad to tell you all about it!
Derek: * Hangs up phone *
Me: Derek? Derek?
Why would I want a phone with a call blocker? I'd miss calls from Derek and I need to tell people about these accidents I've been having recently. I just hope he calls back because I want to tell him about the accident I had with a squirrel and my nuts.

I've had one of these for ages, and it's great. I'd recommend to anyone who is fed up of getting spam calls / cold callers / fake callers. You can set up calls the way you want them, block some or all, block by dialing code, block by type, block withheld. Pretty much however you like. I laugh everytime I see the wee green call light flashing and no noise from the phone, because some caller is being told "the number you are calling is not accepting your call".

for two weeks we've had the newer BT 8610 phones bought from Curry's.
Not much difference between the models, but I have to say they work great.
I work nights and there's nothing worse than being woken by an Indian or African guy or girl trying to fleece me of money.

When I got my 8500 I discovered my Virgin line didn't have caller ID. Investigated and found on an M package (in fact all packages) Virgin was supposed to include it free. Called them and they said it was, but was only rolled out to older subscribers on request. Took a couple of days before it activated (for free).

Works in conjunction with the speed dial phone book in the phone, so all callers in the book, the ones you've set up to call often, are automatically whitelisted.

You can do that. Set call control to custom, then you get a separate setting for each of .....
Blocked numbers
Allowed numbers
International
Withheld
Payphones
Mobile numbers
Unavailable (dunno how this differs from withheld)
All other numbers
For each you can set it to Announce, Block, Ans.Phone or Allow, so set "all other numbers" to Allow, and the others as suits you.
I'd recommend just setting announce though, it's easy enough to use. You get a call from a number it doesn't know, it challenges the caller, you can then add it to contacts right there. Only needs done once, and then in future all calls from that number get straight through unchallenged.

Great deal, but be aware I found the audio quality to be of a really low quality, both when speaking and to listen too. The phone did block 100% of scum callers, though. Even so I ended up giving mine away, as older people had problems hearing me.
Incidentally the newer 8600 has just been released at just £10 more.
It has a dedicated call guardian button on the front. I would like to think they have improved the sound quality. It's a pity Panasonic does not have a phone as good as this for blocking calls, as the audio on them is great.

I am looking for a new home phone with answerphone but I need to be able to switch off the ringer and any other noise alerts when I'm sleeping off nights. Does this one allow the ringer to be completely switched off? Also, can messages be left on the answerphone without the answerphone then making a noise to alert you to the message? Or can the answerphone be switched off as well as the ringer? Perhaps someone with this can advise?
Apart from the dedicated call guardian, what are the improvements?

Not a single unwanted call since I got them over a year ago, before I was inundated with junk calls and used to get 4-5 every day.
Only downside is withheld numbers, my work phone is withheld by default and whenever I call the house I have to speak to a robot. Annoying as hell and no way to resolve it
I don't believe it matters who your supplier is.
An excellent phone apart from the loudspeaker function which is poor on all 4 of mine, sound is badly distorted the rest of the functions however are spot on.

Brilliant. No more cold calls since we set it up. Highly recommended.

The twin set refurbs from Telephones Online (via Amazon) are only £32.99 and the set I got from them for my parents was "as new". Way better than the BT4500 which they replaced.
Does what it says on the tin.
Not sure why its taken this long to implement call blocking features on landline phones. IMO, all landline phones should now be equipped with these features.

Worth noting these are discontinued as the 8600 are out, not sure what the differences are in functionality.

Goodbye!"
They were great for blocking calls though.
No more nuisance calls since we got them..and if you look call history you can see all the calls its blocked! fab
but what are the menus like on thus phone ? I ask because the phone I have now is a pain it doesn't tell me if I have a missed call, I can't view the last number called , and to retrieve answer phone messages I have to go into about 3 sub menus
They are... But it wont launch till later in the year.... BT offers 'breakthrough' service to divert 'huge numbers' of nuisance calls
In the meantime I've got total control of who can get through and who cant using the similar updated BT 8600's
Highly recommended, especially at this price.
Each phone takes x2 AAA rechargeable batteries. Included in the box. Mains power adaptor.

£40 is a very good price, buy.
Heat added.
I use mine with Virginmedia, but I did have to add Caller Display to my package which costs a few £ per month.
Blocks every call at moment till caller display is activated.
All works very good, sound is ok but not 100% about 85-90% could be better. rarely use landline so no problem for me.
does this need both handsets plugged into phone sockets? Or do they sync up and run off one socket? We have only one functioning socket in the house but would like a phone upstairs
Also - anyone know how loud the loudspeaker function is?
Minor problem with this setup: the 8500 doesn't ring at all for numbers it's challenging, but your other phones will for a single ring - a little irritating. It's better to have 8500s replacing all your phones, so you never even hear the cold callers ringing at all.
Can someone confirm that as a sky customer i get free caller id that works with this call monitoring system ?
