I've never had to replace an inner tube that failed due to a manufacturing fault and I've bought some dirt cheap tubes over the years. The only flats I've suffered have been punctures through the tyre (pieces of flint, glass stone and thorn still remain in the tyre) and a blow out that happened as I had just finished improperly fitting one. I don't really know how to judge quality of tubes but anything the right size seems good enough.
I've reserved a few at a couple London stores near work and hopefully I'll be able to grab at least a couple as spares. Not had much luck with Halfords stock system on previous visits.

Yes, but due to the low numbers I'm presuming that most customers haven't bothered to review them and are perfectly happy?
I'm assuming boardman bikes have them fitted as standard??

Great price for a lightweight inner tube, but almost all of the reviews give them 1/5. Tempted, but not sure they're worth the risk.

You've never tried continental supersonics then
They're £10 each and randomly one day will decide to blow up knocking the tyre off the rim. I've had 3 fail along the seam (no punctures) before I gave up. I actually had one fail 2 minutes after being inflated (to well below the recommended max psi) - my head was next to it as I was putting the pump valve on the other tube.
Never again

Agree I wouldn't recomment using reviews as a sole basis for purchasing decisions . All you need to do is look at this site and the amount of people who vote and don't leave reasons why they have voted. Notwithstanding that only certain segments if the population will vote e.g. younger and more technically driven ore ones where expectations been exceeded or shattered. Those that work in customer services departments will understand . people rarely ring to praise service . if you getting complaints all day you forget that if only hearing from 5% customers the other 95% are either happy with service or can't be bothered to complain

Been using conti supersonics for years and the only issues I have had are due to not fitting them properly. They are thin tubes so greater care has to be taken when fitting.

You both make a good point, but take a look at their own brand Halford tubes - plenty of positive feedback. While not every boardman tube will fail it's likely a high percentage will.

21 Apr 16#28
All 3 failed along the seam, I couldn't have taken anymore care putting them in.
1) Failed while climbing, had been in for 250? miles - knocked the front tyre off the rim. I was near the top of a long descent so that could have been painful.
2) Replaced 1 and was fine.
3) Rear had been for around 450? miles and it failed, no marks on the tyre or rim tape to suspect anything and I inspected everything.
4) After getting home I replaced 3 with another and it went without the bike moving an inch.
2 was removed and placed in the spares bin.
I'm not sure I'll try them again in a rush.
But these boardman tubes will be going on my commuter, which rarely reaches 30mph...

I've bought continentals for £1 (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/halfords-ealing-broadway-inner-tubes-1-each-3-for-2-2251942), vavert ones for £1 from PX. All still going strong.
Why does the £1 price point make them any less effective?
jezzery
21 Apr 16#30
Erh because all the reviews say so. It's funny how some people on this site choose to take reviews for what they are and then choose to ignore them according to what suits them. If I read 5 reviews saying something is rubbish i generally take that as a sign that it will be rubbish. Did the continental and px tubes also receive rubbish reviews?

21 Apr 16#31
All 12 of them?
"They have split, not punchered they all have had weak spots, and at a reduced rate they are not good poor for use" :man:
"As above slow puncture after one ride. Couldn't get the pressure above 60 PSI without the pump popping off the valve. This one was a replacement for a returned continental that wouldn't fit within the rim!" Cheap pump?
"Bought 2 tubes, had 2 rides, got 2 very slow punctures! Not impressed." Core?
"Do not buy rubbish I've had three now and all boardman say is that I must of trapped it in the tyre been cycling ten years and never trapped one" Core?
Most relate to the tubes slowly deflating, this just means that the cores need tightening?
Like I said previously, I'm assuming all boardman bikes have their own branded tubes fitted and I've not heard of issues with them.
I'll stick one on the turbo trainer wheel tonight (if halfords still have the couple I ordered) and report back if it blows up/can't get it to hold pressure.

I second that , one blew up one quiet sunday morn while inflating a new conti tube in maxxis hookworm tyres
..it peeled the double-walled rim like a banana (I've still got the damaged wheel).
Very very loud , afterward my ears were ringing for ages,
worse still my neighbours thought I'd set something off

btw any cheap Boardman or other brand shraeder valve tubes ?
I kinda prefer shraeder valves as compatible with garage lines .
guess I could carry a presta-to-shraeder-valve adapter along with a spare tube for emergencies so I can use a garage line...carefully

21 Apr 16#35
That must be why they're called "supersonics" then :man:
The rims I have came with a plastic insert that allows you to use Presta valves with, or Schraeder valves without. It might be that you need a similar bit of plastic to safely use a Presta valve on a rim intended for use with Schraeder valves.
That said you make a good point and I'll be looking to fit tubes with Schareder valves next time.

What happens if you put a Presta valve in a wheel which has hole big enough for a Schrader? The reason I ask is I have new wheels and the bike shop put Schraders when I normally had Prestas. Are they the same diameter at the base. Thanks.
