Following up currently popular iPhone 5s New & Refurb on O2 Refresh, you can also buy an iPhone 6 16gb Refurb for £261.99

Simply scroll down and select £38 tariff with £69.99 up-front

Its Device Plan is only £8/month so call O2 as soon as you receive it, to unlock it and cancel the Airtime Plan

So work out only £261.99 = (£69.99 + £8 x 24) for a like new phone! Yay! :-)

Update: Not sure if the Three SIM trick will work for this as well. You can simply insert Three SIM very firstly to activate the phone and voila!, it's now unlocked and no need to call O2

iPhone 6 64GB and 128GB best deals would be £419.99

O2 Refresh is different to all other networks phone plan. Phone Plan + Airtime Plan = O2 Refresh. You can simply payoff the phone plan and cancel the Airtime plan without any penalty. I have 2 iPhone 5s - brand new bought previous months and cancellation is so easy - took ~10 mins for both.

I think I am right in saying it's only £273.99 if you choose 'Pay for your device in full'. If you ring them up and pay it off then it should be £89.99 up front plus £6 per month which adds up to £233.99

Bizarre. After paying off the refurb 6 I decided to buy a new 5s for my wife on the same deal. Went through all the same order process, no upfront payment though. Did click & collect and picked up brand new phone yesterday and called them today to pay off device plan and cancel airtime contract. They have no record of the phone number being mine! I'm not the account holder as far as they're concerned and they have nothing set up for that phone number. On checking, there is no new "pay monthly" phone on my account either. Neither is there a direct debit set up on my bank account like there was for the 6. I'm just going to sit on my hands and see what happens. If they don't pursue this, looks like I may have just picked up an entirely free Iphone 5s. I'm not even using the sim they gave me, I already have a different giffgaff sim for the phone which works just fine. Double bargain :-)

Does anyone know if it wouldn't be better to get a Brand new, sealed one of Ebay, HotUKDeals private seller? Would I have full apple warranty if the phone hasn't been opened and registered, or does it start as soon as the private seller received it/purchased it?

2) because after activation, O2 wait for Apple to update them so the device will show in your My O2 account (create one if you haven't after received the phone &sim). Try 3 SIM first btw.

4) yes, all in under 5 minutes. I used my Vodafone to call O2 CS. Options 2-1-(O2 Number)-2-4 to speak to retention. They took payment over the phone (Debit card ONLY), them forwarded me to normal CS to proceed cancellation.

To ensure the final bill 0, even they confirmed over the phone, I use their Chat and get copy of the transcript having their confirmation.

So, you're certain this way is problem-free and robust. To recap:

1) receive the phone
2) insert O2 SIM and wait a few hours. Is it necessary to wait?
3) create O2 account, log in in MyO2 and click Unlock Device
4) Call O2 straight away. Do you just ask to pay off the phone and cancel the air time?

Thanks!

You guys can also request to unlock it online providing that you inserted the O2 come with your order and wait couple hours. Then login your My O2, scroll down and click Unlock the Device. Mine has been done in 24hrs.

Then call to pay off the plan over the phone (Debit card only) and cancel the Airtime - no other bill to pay at all i.e. final bill = 0

Picked mine up yesterday. When I spoke to them they said I may be charged for the 2 days between taking out the contract and cancelling it yesterday. Didn't use the provided sim at all, paid off the £192 outstanding and cancelled the £30 per month airtime contract. When they asked me why, I told them I already had a GiffGaff sim I was putting in there.

Phone looks brand new, no marks at all. Thanks OP!

There's a very limited warranty with the refurb, you can check the period on Apple's website via the serial number. The last I bought from O2 had 3.5 months on it. It varies but it's not much different to mine.

You can walk into an Apple store at any time for support.

1. Has anyone successfully tried the 3sim trick with iphone6 refurb from o2?
2.Also, do i need to wait for unlock code to come through (72hrs) before cancelling airtime contract?
3.Do they ask for a reason to cancel airtime contract?
4.Is there anything I can do to help ensure they cancel the contract properly (and i dont have debt management chasing me months down the line)?

Any guidance from seasoned o2 refreshers helpful!

from what I have read you need to activate the sim first so the 3 trick wont work. unlocking isn't a code as such you have to connect through iTunes.

Told by O2? Possibly that meant it hasn't been locked to O2 yet until you put O2 SIM in to activate it. Try 3 first, activate (connect to internet) and then insert any network SIMs other than O2 to see.
minhp
25 Apr 16 #58
Only new iPhone - I believe. Since the Refurb ones of O2 are sourced from Apple because it's cost effective for them to do so (just my opinion - no source to back up), they are set to lock to the first ever SIM inserted to activate i.e. connect to Apple server for activation. The iPhone 5s Refurb, I got is completely brand new and Apple warranty only begun after activation with option to purchase Applecare.
qwerta369
25 Apr 16 #56
That would work if O2's stock were EMEA locked. But they aren't. They're O2 locked.

25 Apr 16 #54
Thanks OP. Have done this for my daughter. So can you just clarify the steps I need to take to minimise cost. I don't intend using the sim card I used for O2 refresh (I use GiffGaff with the family) and I don't want to use the sim card that O2 will provide. Can I immediately cancel the airtime plan? If so, can I then pay them the full 24 x £8 and be done with it? I am a bit confused about the bit to do with activating the sim and making a call as I don't want to use it and don't need it unlocking as giffgaff works with O2 anyway.
minhp to carled
25 Apr 16 1 #55
Hi! Have you received the iPhone? Simply use your other phone to call O2 CS to request them to unlock (good in the long run and better price when you want to re-sell it) and then, request them that you wish to pay off the balance of your Phone Plan (£8 x 24 months) and cancel the airtime completely. (See this http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=Companion,question=ref(User):str(Mobile),CASE=21629

An easier way to unlock iPhone Official Refurb is to activate it using Three SIM as its first ever SIM. Insert 3 SIM, activate it and voila.

Might be an idea to read up on the consumer credit act before writing something like that, you can take out credit anywhere and pay it off whenever you like, there could be an additional fee but in this case there isn't and as long as you pay it off there can be no adverse affects unless they don't close the debt correctly but then that could happen with any company and is why you should check your credit files every so often.
jimbob2010
24 Apr 16 #52
If they have left missed payment marks on your credit report email [email protected] and explain the situation. Be warned it takes them about a month to reply.
nobbyogden
24 Apr 16 #51
Ah, yes I did cancel the direct debit. In the early days O2 weren't running these refresh deals appropriately and were taking the whole contract cost about a month after termination which was a ball ache to get back. I think advice on here at the time was to cancel the direct debit to stop this happening. All seems plausible now, thanks.
jimbob2010
24 Apr 16 1 #50
You didn't happen to cancel the direct debit did you? I did something similar on one of mine. After I had cancelled o2 tried to collect £500 odd from me by mistake, but because I had cancelled the direct debit they couldn't and also they never sent me any bill so I never knew that I had any money outstanding even if it was an error. Once I got the debt collection letter was the first time I even knew that o2 were looking to get money from me. In the end I had to email the team in o2 that deals with their credit stuff and get them to remove the missed payment flags on my credit report.
jimbob2010
24 Apr 16 2 #49
Nonsense, your not exploiting a loophole. O2 have themselves designed the offer in this way and advertise the ability to cancel at any time as an advantage. If this wasn't somehow in their favour I think they would be shutting down this 'exploit' pretty sharpish. I mean variations of this deal have only existed for over 3 years.

Credit hit? That's funny seeing as the last 4 iPhones I've bought in this way since 2013 haven't made any difference whatsoever.

Clearly o2 are selling these at cost or slightly below cost to a) shift refurb stock before the iPhone 7 is released and b) hope people stay on with their contract and don't cancel. This is what's known as a win win. You get a cheaper phone than normal, o2 get rid of stock that will be discontinued in a few months. You really think a corporation would even for a minute tolerate this happening for so long if they never achieved some benefit from it?

I think it's best to sign up free monthly credit check from Noddle &Clear Score to monitor your file. There must be something gone wrong along the way for yours. Mine went fine.
nobbyogden
24 Apr 16 #47
Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes paid in full, one of them I decided to keep the contract for about 7 months and then pay of in full and they still came chasing. Both times once I'd told them over the phone that it was a refresh contract they went away to investigate but I still got further letters. Ridiculous.

EDIT - and thank you for the 'noddle' reference I have just been on to get an updated version of my credit file, I had never previously heard of them.
MusicmanJP
24 Apr 16 #46
Because this 'deal' involves taking out a contract and cancelling one element of it after agreeing to pay the full fee. Phone companies don't like people exploiting these loopholes, duh! It will definitely take a credit hit.

23 Apr 16 #44
That's strange. Did you pay off the phone plan i.e. its whole 24 mths at time of your cancellation + unlock request? I use Clear Score and Noddle to monitor my credit file and the 2 5s were shown as settled/fulfilled. In fact, I have applied for Amex recently and got accepted as well.

minhp to adi0604
23 Apr 16 #24
Yes, it will leave credit footprint. But I personally experience that it does not impact that worth to worry about, unless it were for credit card application or worse you missed payment(s). I was once rejected by EE few years ago but accepted for credit card w £10k+ limit.
nobbyogden to adi0604
23 Apr 16 #43
I've cancelled three refresh deals early and for two of them have received final demands from debt collection agencies about 10 months after the fact.

You might get a decent deal from this but the early cancellation part is just the beginning of the hoops you may have to jump through later. Maybe I was just unlucky but would be interested if anyone else has had similar issues.

It depends on where you bought the refurb iPhones from.

I believe only mobile networks and large retailers are able to offer 12 months warranty. For O2 Refresh and my recent 2 iPhone 5s Refurb (actual New but being sold as such to make way for the SE), the warranty 5s is provided by Apple and the clock started counting as soon as I activated them.
