A metal one will rust over a UK winter. A clay one will only crack and break if you:
a) don't season it properly (its anoying when you just want to enjoy it, but it makes all the difference)
b) overload it with too much wood, which is just common sense
c) knock it over when trying to chase the neighbour's stupid cat out of the garden because it keeps pooing on your lawn...

We got a metal one - lasted about 6 months even with a cover over - was a rust bucket in the end! Will be buying one of these, cheers op

I bought one (not from Aldi) for my parents years ago. I think it lasted around 10 years and was still going strong until it finally cracked and shattered - but that was understandable as it was blown over in high winds and landed on the paving slabs!

Indeed - make sure it's cast iron as clay doesn't cope with high temperatures too well.

@RicardoFuller, Clearly your son paid too much for this item at £79.99 for an identical item. I bought this item last year from Aldi and its worth around £25.
For £79.99 your son could have got something 3 times better.
Mine not cracked and have used it a few times. You need to ensure its heated up gently at lower temperatures for the first few times.

they fire clay in a kiln, surely it can handle a few sticks being burnt inside it

In a kiln, the temperature is high, but it is raised and lowered gently and is even all around the object. If you light a fire in a cold chiminea you can get a very rapid temperature rise, which is also localised. The differential expansion is what can cause the cracking.

No it's not big enough, its smaller than it looks as its only 30cm wide and the mouth looks like 20cm? So you wouldn't have room for wood and pizza.
I'm making a traditional clay pizza oven ATM and its coming along great, its also really cheap to make because it's 2 parts sand to 1 part clay, do a Google search and make one its really fun and pretty easy :smiley:

Haha! All chimineas should come with instructions on how to do this. Usually just consists of lightning two or three very small fires and leaving them to burn out.

bought something similar from B&Q, followed the instructions about curing and sealing it,didn't overfill it and it lasted 4 months and then a huge crack,ending up at the local tip.
not saying they are all the same but something to consider

I have a cast iron one including the flue. It has sat outsde for 15 years and its still going strong.
