I concur, but then thats a secondary problem, the first one being they release loads of stuff in Asia and sometimes USA, but not in Europe. Why exclude us nice Europeans who want to spend our hard earned money on their products? Strange...

They're not that much cheaper either. Maybe by a few quid here and there but they don't market themselves in the 2nd world countries really (Russia, Brazil, South America etc) so the potential savings are nothing like those on the PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
In the 90's region locking was a thing because of the PAL and NTSC thing but even that never applied to portable consoles. Nintendo's first locked portable was the DSi.

That's a good analogy. The fact that what Nintendo are doing with this whole thing seems so 90s. OK sure, games may be cheaper in other regions however they should still see it as a sale at least.

PS4/XB1 remasters are a mixed bag. On the one hand, re-releasing something like GTA V, TLoU, God of War II or Shadow of the Colossus makes perfect sense because their original releases happened in the dying days of a format and they suited the new one much better. Likewise, new console launches are always a good opportunity for some people to jump between platforms so releasing an Uncharted or Halo collection makes perfect sense in that regard.
A lot of them are crap cash-ins though like the Prototype "remasters" that somehow looked and ran worse than the 360 versions. It's just a case of separating the wheat from the chaff.

You and me both. Region locking a handheld system seems like the most backward step that any console manufacturer could take. MS and Sony don't even bother to region lock their home consoles anymore.
The case I always use is a British family on holiday and stuck in an airport in Florida on their way home. The airport shops have 3DS games that the parents could buy to keep the kids quiet but they can't buy them because Nintendo have region locked the system. Why would you want to lose sales like that? It makes no sense whatsoever.

I personally have found learning all of the multiple grammatical systems and the countless unwritten rules regarding keigo harder than learning Kanji. Once you start focusing on the basic radicals, some of the more complex Kanji start to make a bit more sense. The origins of a few of them could probably be considered a bit risqué by western standards as well.

Correct, you'd need to use an unofficial, custom firmware, or an exploit-based hack using a copy of Cubic Ninja or other exploitable game. Which may not make it "officially" region free, but it will play games from out of region just fine with the correct tools installed. Naturally this wouldn't be supported by Nintendo and will void your warranty, but such is the risk you take.

It doesn't technically make it region free. O3DS/XL models can be forced to run out of region cartridges via the HomeBrew Launcher but the N3DS cannot. There is officially no such thing as a region free 3DS. Even devkits and debug units are region locked.

Both plus katakana. Additionally my other half has a Japanese console as well so it means that we can share games that way. If I had a EUR system then we wouldn't be able to share anything.

I already own a Japanese 3DS XL and UK N3DS slim but gotta say I am tempted to buy another japanese N3DS as this looks amazing!!
Most japanese exclusives are essentially unplayable RPGs unless you are fluent in Kanji. I would really love to play Taiko no Tatsujin: Chibi Dragon to Fushigina Orb though. Can you read Kanji or Hiragana?

They do for the N3DSLL, I have seen them in Japan myself. They were very limited edition though (that happens a lot in Japan) so I think your chances of finding one from abroad would be remote, especially at a decent price.
Spark
18 Apr 161#23
They definitely won't. You would probably have more luck buying it from an exporter via Amazon or Ebay such as this one:
Keep in mind that this will be region locked to Japan though and will not be able to run games from over here or access the UK E-Shop. The system menu will also be locked to Japanese only.
You could potentially region switch it to a EUR model if you wanted to but you would need to downgrade and install CFW on it first and it can be a risky process if you don't know what you're doing.

Massive meh. There's only so many times Nintendo can draw the nostalgia card. I see them doing it through gritted teeth now. And im a Nintendo fan. + jp games only. Some positives but outweighed by the negs Imo. Grab a regular new 3ds and some plates. Lots if great designs to mix and match. I went hanafuda and it's great.

Thing is a lot of the people playing Nintendo now are late 30s, 40+'rs and played Nintendo as youngesters. Or they have bought their own kids Nintendo consoles. Nostalgia is always powerful. I don't think Nintendo have even got going yet, the list of possible themed consoles is endless.
I mean who isn't going to be a wee bit tempted by a DK 3DS console? Along the lines of...

I was a bit confused about this.
It says it is the superfamicom edition so assumed it plays old famicom games
The website says it plays 3DS games only.
It does however look like a famicom when seen from behind. - not sure this makes it worth the extra cash
