So we were burgled a few weeks ago. They ran around the house with a metal detector looking for Jewellery and safes... everything I didn't put in the safe but in a plastic box was left behind as they took the safe thinking they had the jackpot.

So unless you plan on bolting safes to the floor (in which case you are probably invited them to come back better prepared in the future as they now know the layout of your house) - I'd stay clear of safes, unless its just to store stuff away from nosey house-mates

I have 1 of these Yale safes and can recommend them to anyone who is thinking of going for this deal, I have bolted and no more nailed mine to a wall and there is no way it could be moved without a hell of a lot of work, and has for the youtube vids of how easy they are to break into I would love to see someone try this with my 3 Jack Russell's hanging of their legs :wink:.

Your assuming this is a quality yale product and not just some cheaply made crap with the yale branding added after to try and sell it



ive got a small cheap safe that has a key lock on . have it bolted 4 ways into a bookcase hidden by a cabinet door with strips of wood protecting the mountings and edges so it cannot just be easily pried . Sure the most determined theif with some tools will be able to get it out and take it home to smash . but it is enough to keep the typical local numpty burgular out . Its only got a £500 worth of stuff in tops .This safe would be fine if locked in a cabinet and bolted down to protect it from being bumped open . Its not gonna be infalible but you would be stupid to buy a cheap safe of any type to keep thousands of pounds of stuff in .

get the version with the key as the electronic ones can be opened with assorted vegetables

It's much better to put valuables in something simpler (like a box with a padlock) which is extremely well hidden IMO.

This looks like a good item for the price. It would be fine if properly bolted to a concrete floor from the inside. I think I'll stick with my gun cabinet though :-)

What if you mounted it beneath something so that the top couldn't be "whacked"? I've reserved one but can't decide whether to bother now!?

No - way too small for that. The internal dimensions aren't bad but the mechanism / back of keypad etc takes up some of the space when you close the door.

It's not mate. Honestly. My trusty safe I have entrusted with everything opened with a tap when I tried after watching this video.

I think then it is probably safer to hide your money in a hollowed out potato.

The problem with many of these safes is that mostly they are not bolted in - or simply bolted to an MDF wardrobe shelf so 1) the safe can be opened by moving it and forcing it 2) the whole safe is stolen and opened later. They are not proper security safes but they can stop casual thieving from a household member or make it awkward for burglars. Best to bolt it in and make access to lever it out awkward - or buy a much better safe. safe should always be hidden too, behind clothing, a panel or whatever. If burgled, best not seen at all.

my mrs inadvertently managed to lock a similar style safe to this with my passport inside the day before a getaway.
battery went flat.
had angle grinders and jigsaws at the ready.
cut straight through the lock with a 2" holesaw in 3 seconds .. i wouldnt bother.

Being on a wall or floor does not stop it from being opened with a tap on the locking assembly.

If you want to hide stuff, you could maybe modify a floor board so you could store stuff underneath that. No one is going to bother to check there.

If someone tried to break into my house and steal things and they found a safe, that would be the first thing on their list to steal.

Bang the top of the safe and it opens. Love it. Read the reviews.

If you are concerned, I believe there are ways you can to prevent 'potato bump' entry.

One way is to stretch the solenoid spring and another is to fit a small plate - Google it if you need instructions.

Mine is guarded 24/7 by a pixie security guard who lives inside the Safe. Anyone opening it is gonna get an eye full of pixie dust.

Agree - I've never been drawn to slam a door on my crown jewels and lock it, but I can see how others might be.

I have this safe bolted to another safe for ammunition. It does the job, although I need something a little bigger.

Everyone knows these can be opened with a potato. I tried it with mine (not a potato tho).
Handy for a place to put stuff, but the lockable aspect is pointless.

can confirm these do open with a few good thumps on the top and a handle "giggle" bare in mind when purchasing

gripfill is a builders adhesive applied with a silicone gun

Got slightly more expansive on from Costco . Bolted it down to 18 mm mdf , then to walk through the side and back and it was bedded on gripfill . Then boxed it in so you can only see the door .
As mentioned the professional thieves will get in , but the local riff raff won't . Also if you have a house alarm going off there in and out in minutes so they won't attempt to take unless easy to prize away
