Can this be made into sushi?
K811 to firstofficer
13 Mar 16 1 #33
No. you need sushi grade salmon/fish for sushi, means it would have been frozen over -20°c to kill bacteria.
MeesterX to firstofficer
14 Mar 16 #37
Yes. Take it home and carefully do absolutely nothing to it

(Actually prob not. For sushi it's usually frozen to kill parasites for 7 days or so, also if the shop isn't selling it for sushi they may not effectively avoid cross contamination in handling it. I'd buy from someone who knows what they're doing and what they're selling you. Also fyi - the term "sushi grade" isn't a proper standard but a marketing term.)
martgking to firstofficer
14 Mar 16 #55
I wouldn't. I'd only sushi fish from a fishmongers who knew exactly how recently the fish was caught.

I believe it's fed pellets made from small fish (sardines etc..) so is fairly OK to eat..
But honestly the mackerels ( £2.50/kg) now at tesco are probably a better buy if you look at health reasons since they aren't farmed but caught in sea where they have been feeding themselves on fisch scum.

Mackerel gets a bit of a raw deal image wise but it's a far better 'oily' fish than Salmon.
BenderRodriguez
14 Mar 16 #41
Farmed fish is crowded and therefore prone to many parasites and diseases. Thats why it's packed with medicines.

Not to mention the texture of meat. Those fish don't have much room to swim and develop muscles, meat is really poor quality.
yrreb88
14 Mar 16 1 #42
Wild fish are still prone to parasites and disease. It seems that all wild fish, unless from proven risk free waters, are frozen at some point to eliminate any parasites. The exception to this is farmed salmon because the risk of parasites is negligible. Source

The meat might not be as good quality but it can be around half the price. It's ok for me at least.

Freezing doesn't kill bacteria just stops multiplying. Temperature over 65c starts killing bacteria. But your post is not entirely wrong, quick freezing below -20 is killing parasites and their eggs like tapeworms. It is fully recommended to freeze any fish for at least 24h before eating and defrost it in fridge not in room temperature

Its farmed Salmon.

Not wild. It is bred to eat & then more a bred to replace the ones you eat.
dolly92
14 Mar 16 #74
Farmed fish is more often than not fed with wild fish, and still contributes vastly to environmental damage. There is no such thing as sustainable seafood, yet many people are completely unaware of the disastrous effects of eating fish (or meat for that matter), because the people that make millions in profit from these industries don't want anyone to know. Fish farms are mentioned towards the end of the video I posted at 12:24 if you're interested.

15 Mar 16 1 #81
Unless I'm misunderstanding, what are you eating? Without agriculture, how will we feed people?
soldierboy001
15 Mar 16 #82
So what do you suggest? I believe cows are bred for food, sheep are bred for food, corn is grown for food the blist goes on. Should we be left to die out as a race?
dolly92
15 Mar 16 #83
The production of meat, fish, dairy and eggs is causing most damage, and they're not necessary for humans to survive as everything other than vitamin b12 (which is only in meat because it is also supplemented to animals) is available from plants easily. I fully recognise that veganism is not for everyone, and some people want to continue eating meat/cheese/eggs etc, but I would recommend reductionarianism (where the consumption of these products is reduced to around 1-3 times a week rather than every meal) for many people as this would be much more sustainable, and if taken up by enough people, could start reversing climate change.
soldierboy001
15 Mar 16 #84
Yes guess I'm just an animal, along with all those other millions.
You carry on with your preaching and I'll carry on with my eating.
dolly92
15 Mar 16 #85
I'm not preaching, at the end of the day people make their own decisions and I have no problem with that, I just think that everyone should be able to make those decisions on facts rather than the misrepresentations that they're taught because of profit, that isn't a bad thing so please don't make out like it is.
soldierboy001
15 Mar 16 #86
New balls please.
yrreb88
15 Mar 16 #87
Vitamin b12 is only in meat because it's supplemented to animals? I don't think people did that thousands of years ago.
dolly92
15 Mar 16 #88
Apologies, I didn't go into enough detail. It's only in meat in large enough quantities for meat eaters to not have to supplement it also because farm animals are often supplemented with vitamin b12. It comes from bacteria (usually in soil) but as society has become more concerned with food being clean it isn't found. Thousands of years ago b12 would have been found in plants and meat products, but these days everything is washed too much
dolly92
15 Mar 16 1 #89
You asked me a question, I answered it. There's no need to now act defensive and be rude to me. You don't have to do what I suggested, or even agree with me for that matter. I posted the info I did purely because I'm aware that a lot of people aren't aware of the problems their diet choices may be presenting to the environment, and I believe that people should be able to make informed decisions, which they cannot do without ever being introduced to the information.
etta191
15 Mar 16 #90
Absolutely no one wants to read all this bickering :disappointed:
It should be obvious even to no consumers of farmed salmon that this is a great deal as a whole fish at best of times would cost £12+ instead of £4.
I can imagine what gives some people the right to think that they are more intelligent that everybody else and assume the role of an uninvited educator. In this age of information believe me we have all come across your facts more often than necessary and have the right to choose what to eat, drink and so on.
yrreb88
15 Mar 16 #91
Are you sure? I don't see what this has to do with hygiene and food safety.

Pretty sure herbivores already have the bacteria in their guts. Cobalt is actually the key issue and limiting factor and that is supplemented in trace amounts to ensure optimum nutrition both for yields and welfare purposes. Supplementation can be important as cobalt levels are determined by a variety of factors such as the weather, soil and pasture.
