Saw this just, Maplins have this great hard drive reduced. Cheaper than amazon's price, which is frustrating as bought one last week.

Normally CCTV & DVR drives have no error checking as it is not needed.
If you used a normal drive with error checking and the drive comes across an error it will tray and correct the error which can take seconds or minutes resulting in a loss of recording for this time. Without error checking the drive continues on as if no error and the user see a small glitch on the screen.

so I'm guessing for NAS it is worth paying the extra £20 for WD Red

Where do you get the idea that they are not supposed to be used 24/7?

I don't have time to look it up now but look for "TLER streaming" (time limited error recovery).

I'm talking about a drive not having error checking.

do we really need proof - it's a drive for cctv - if you are going to buy a drive for a cctv then get this / why wouldn't you

Not optimised to be written to 24/7, I didn't say 'used'.

Yes but this is a little cheaper than proper server drives

How is it different from other server drives? Are they not supposed to be used 24/7 as well?

It's been validated to work for it's lifetime being written too 24/7.

Can't see why they don't make a low capacity SSD/High capacity HD hybrid which would surely last longer as it would only require running the HD when SSD memory is near capacity?

That's not how hybrid drives work, the flash memory works as a cache for the main conventional HDD storage. The conventional storage will be in regular use.

all I need now is a quality HD POE system to go with it - none of the systems available give me inclination that they will last as long as the hard drive

nOT REALLY USEFUL IN THIS SITUATION as its meant for up to 32 streams constant recording, so the drive would probably die quicker with spinning up and down all the time. Plus adding ssd cache adds complexity/cost and further point of failure.
They also have another 4tb drive £4 cheaper (possibly a wd blue?)
