I came from the Nexus 5, had the SU6 for around four months now and although it's not as good as the Nexus, it holds up pretty well. It's a fraction slower but nothing major, a little lag if you have 5/6 programs on at the same time but the major major drawback for me is the camera. The camera on the Nexus is brilliant but the camera on the SU6 is just sh*t. So much so that I'm looking to replace this now as I take a lot of photos. If you're not bothered about the camera, then I'd definitely recommend this, it performs just as good as some flagship phones I've had.

I've had my SU6 since last September when I paid £99 for it. Can I just temper the 'the camera is sh*t' comment a little? Yes, in low light, pictures are dark and yes, on zoom, pictures and especially videos are blocky (as with most camera phones) but in good light with standard focus, you can get images that to my eye, are outstandingly good. After my 1st Gen Moto G, the camera was a massive step up.
BTW, recognising that all phone cameras have their limitations, we bought a Canon Powershot for 'proper' photos. Great in low light, IOS and high zoom. To me it makes more sense to buy a cheap (but okay) smartphone and a dedicated (moderately expensive) camera than an over-priced flagship phone.

i have the ultra 6,great phone but there is a software issue that vodafone say they have replicated and are trying to fix,
a lot of people including myself complain of the ringtone turning itself off without warning, you have no idea until you notice missed calls, which for work users can cost money, and its starting to p**s me off.
it seems to have happened after update in december.

Apparently a 5.1.1 problem not a SU6 problem. It has happened to me. One cause is pairing with a bluetooth device then disconnecting. I switched off bluetooth & rebooted the phone and it has been OK since ... not ideal but at least I know how to fix it even temporarily ... now waiting for a patch /update to android

agree with this, for £200 you can have this phone and a very compact dedicated camera that will out perform most if not all flagship phones I use a SU6 paired with a sony wx200 with wifi and it works seamlessly if you can put up with carrying a spare device, gives me excellent photos in all light and transfers the pics for editing sharing very quickly and painlessly.

Bought an SU6 a couple of weeks ago to keep me going while I argue with Sony over getting my Z3c repaired - unlocking was simple and rooting was also fairly straightforward once I managed to figure out the correct set of files and instructions. Loving it so far and, apart from the camera, it's probably as good at everything else as my Sony.

Be careful with this phone - I've had 2 from Amazon. Both gone back. If you upgrade Android software (which it will ask you to do straight away) the phone ringer wont work after it connects to Bluetooth then disconnects from Bluetooth.
ie. Connect the phone to Bluetooth in the car...phone rings through the car stereo when someone calls you...take phone out of car...someone rings, it only vibrates. You then need to turn phone off then back on to reset this.
Hopefully this has been sorted (I bought 1 month ago) but have gone with Wileyfox instead with no problems.

I've had this phone for many months now and have enjoyed using it. I do agree with many of the posts about the poor quality camera. After much use, with many different apps I've concluded the quality, in any light, is shockingly poor. My old HTC Wildfire is better! If I'm going out with half a thought that I might take a picture, I'll also bring my old Nexus 5 with me or a 'proper' camera. The HDR pictures take forever to take and the quality is laughable. Note, this is all on my SU6. I may just have a reject but it does appear many other people think the same.

4 Mar 16 1 #79

In the UK unlocking is legal, but will invalidate the warranty: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/unlock-mobile-phone#warrantyq

You may get away with this when returning a new mobile, but not if you need repairs under warranty later (unless mobile is unrepairably dead and can't be checked). Same with rooting.

I don't agree with this but those are the facts in the UK.
SilverBandit

Download Kingo Root (for PC - works better than the apk) http://kingoroot.org/kingo-root
Download the latest SuperSU zip file https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/
Download the TWRP zip file (check your android version) http://www.modaco.com/forums/topic/375554-recovery-twrp-2870/ (I used the v55-5.1.1 file)
(You'll need access to adb shell - http://adbshell.com/downloads)

1. Root using Kingo Root (may report a failure but sometimes has worked anyway, if not reboot and repeat)
2. Copy TWRP and SuperSU to root of internal storage
3. Open adb shell and run the following two commands
su (this will also tell you if step 1 worked - your command prompt will change from "shell@..." to "root@....")
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-twrp2870-p839v55.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery (check the TWRP filename if you downloaded the -5.1.1 file)
4. Boot into TWRP recovery using volume up + power key combination (I find this a very hit and miss method so prefer 'reboot recovery' from the adb shell)
5. Install the SuperSU.zip file from your internal storage

All done.

KingRoot and Kingo Root (and other Chinese variations) mine personal data during rooting (IMEI, etc). They require internet access to root so this worries me.

Are there other rooting methods for the SU6?
koalauk to Sqsq
4 Mar 16 #86
paranoid? of what... of course it needs internet access as downloads the correct script to execute in order to root depending on your system processor variant etc... it is just fine....
thelatics
4 Mar 16 1 #85
And this contradicts that, with some reasoned arguments

http://support.mobileunlocked.com/hc/en-us/articles/200242403-Does-unlocking-a-mobile-phone-affect-the-warranty-

Unlocking might invalidate a contract Sim, but this is a handset purchase and the warranty is on that, the handset and the stock Android software, so whilst Vodafone as a network provider might not like it, Vodafone as a handset manufacturer (via ZTE) would have to repair a broken phone.

I think rooting though would definitely invalidate as it tampers with the whole phone setup

It make me laugh when peps can't even bear to be away from their beloved phone when having a bath. A mobile phone implant might be the answer...

julieallen
6 Mar 16 #88
They aren't the facts.

Unlocking voids the warranty harks back to the days when pretty much every phone needed unlocking using hardware and dismantling the phone.

these phones are unlocked by typing a code in which comes from the Vodafone database, and does not do anything to the warranty. If, and its a big if, you are asked about it being unlocked you just say a guy in a Vodafone store did it for you when you bought the phone as you said you needed to use it abroad.

If unlocking with this method voids the warranty then even getting it unlocked from vodafone by paying them £19.99 would void it
