It has never been such a big thing here - in some countries it's combined with mother's day and is even bigger than valentine's day, as many men will give a flower to every lady they know, or perhaps all ladies where they work if it's an office, bank, shop etc - no hint of romance attached to it, just a way to show appreciation for the fact that without a lady to give birth, would any of us even exist today ? :smiley:
I was pleasantly shocked one year when I first started living in a particular foreign country, to find that cafes, bars etc were totally packed full of groups of ladies young and old all out socializing.
I didn't realize until the following weekend when things were rather quieter and locals explained just how important 'ladies day' was to them, especially as it had fallen at the weekend that year.
It's one of those things that I wish we could import and learn from some of the other cultures/nationalities living amongst us, rather like the lack of fighting and vomiting in most European cities when there's no groups of British stag/hen parties - sad but true.
