It's more likely they placed a large order with a supplier, then realised they'd over ordered. So rather than cancel it at 11th hour so it gets ploughed back into soil, they continued with purchase just to give them away..

peel, par boil, cool, then freeze in airtight bags. cook as per frozen roasters - perfect!
