Not really comparable as M8S uses previous generation S805 / S812 chips & has less featureset than provided by OP that has latest-gen S905. Also not aware of any M8S that has 10bit x265 capability unlike all S905, regardless of RAM.

Unlikely if (non)development of firmware for this box is comparable to the zero development for the earlier X4 box http://www.sumvision.com/product/cyclone-androidx4/x4support.html

£36 seems decent for this specific Sumvision model. If considering the original £40 price, it would be difficult not to justify the additional £4-5 for increased spec inc 2GB RAM via http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182047649140 or 2GB RAM 16GB storage http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182050132367

I've actually just replaced my MX3 with one of these. The MX3 had double the ram than this, which made me hesitant but it really doesn't seem to suffer from it, the faster processor and the change to Android 5.1 mean it still performs a lot better than the one it replaced. Played some 4k from local media and streamed 1080p (over a wired network, ethernet over powerline), with no issues at all. I'd definitely get another.

It should do but it depends if it has the right firmware etc. The hardware has been capable of it for a long time it but there's been a big issue with the OS not being optimized for the hardware, it's been a weakness of android boxes for a long time, even the fire tv and stick. More and more android devices are capable out of the box as time goes on though. The only way to know for sure is if someone owns one and reports about it. The problem is you can have two different devices with the same hardware and only one will support 24p.

I think it is/was being down converted back to 8bit at least until recently. Sometimes you can't even tell especially if the tv has an 8 but panel. I know ffmpeg just got support for 10bit hevc and the windows version now supports 10 bit, not sure about android. Maybe it's recently been enabled?

Some box makers produce device specific versions of Kodi too which helps. The right firmware and software can make a big difference.

The underlying chipset is no doubt excellent and some of the boxes are ridiculously cheap and a better choice than the fire tv. It's just a matter of getting one that takes advantage of it's own power.

I still use a linx tablet with hdmi output for Kodi currently because I only watch 1080p x264 stuff but when I move to 4k it will most probably be an Android box.

Purely observational and not argumentative: I have not experienced any issue with Kodi flawlessly playing 10bit HEVC on S905-based Android. It is now my preferred player of local media since my former favourite MXplayer struggles with 10bit.

Be wary of some of these cheaper boxes. The underlying hardware is very good but a lot of the time the firmware they come with isn't even optimised for the hardware. It's not uncommon for major hardware features to be totally inaccessible with boxes advertised as 4k being incapable of actually outputting 4k video. It's also common for 24p support to be absent, not because the underlaying hardware doesn't support it but because the firmware is not tailored to the hardware. It's worth noting that Kodi doesn't currently support 10 bit hevc either.

I have been thinking about buying an android box for about a year but toooooo many opinions leave me nowhere.

I need it for kodi mainly but also browsing is required ( I like a few tabs open at the same time), emails etc.

Am I right in thinking that I need 2gb ram? Any phone with 1gb ram/ 8gb ROM is a bit laggy when browsing with a few tabs open

I bought a Ki Plus android box for £30. No Bluetooth but has played all the media files I have available on it. Quite a speedy interface on it as well. Also get OTA updates as it's a common android box.

I've got the Beelink MiniMX which uses same chip and it plays everything I throw at it. Twitch and Youtube Android TV apps are great and Kodi flies on this box. I play back 4K 10bit x265 files and it doesn't even break a sweat.

+1 for the minimx box. was almost put off by forums worried about s905 and kodi compatibility. so far it works fine with all add ons.
I only download the essential apps and keep my kodi build light so 1gb copes perfectly.

I agree, it looks ok for the price. But I have tried a few other so-called 4k boxes (with more RAM) which aren't so great. I have a 4k LG TV which streams the 4k content from Amazon/Netflix but stupidly won't handle the HEVC-265 codec direct from a file - moronic! So I want a box that can simply do that. Not much to ask really? The Amazon Fire 4k can do it well enough but at £70 I'll wait until LG get their lame ass fingers out and do a firmware upgrade one day (yawn)

All of the S905-based boxes I have used have handled local x265 without issue via Kodi (16), inc 10-bit x265. MXplayer was my previous preferred local file player but it struggles with 10bit x265, hence now use Kodi. One of the cheapest S905 boxes is around £27 delivered ex-UK. OP item seems decent price for usual s905 spec with known branding.

99% of Kodi streams that boast HD can't get HD. I've run these boxes on 50" & 2x 42" & no problems at all.You should always delete Kodi on any media box you buy & add it yourself with your own build,that way you get rid of unwanted dead link/apps.

I have one of these and it's been a huge disappointment. On paper the hardware specs should make the box very capable but the software stack let's it down.

Using wired or wifi...
YouTube doesn't seem to stream higher than 240p. BBC iplayer is pixelated, skips and had sound sync issues. nowtv complains about an unsupported device. netflix works but seems to be low res only. plex too was hitting buffering/resolution problems.

I have an old nowtv, new nowtv and a roku3, and they are all pretty perfect under the same network conditions.

kodi has been pretty frustrating too. I don't think I managed to watch a single thing without buffering probs, timeouts or no working sources.

I don't why the experience is so poor compared to what the hardware should be capable of.

Says in one review on Amazon for S805 lot of apps (probably more than a half) from the App Store will not work on it, 1080p rendering is not good at all. The picture quality from its Netflix, YouTube, etc applications is nowhere near HD, Very few options managing display/picture resolution, etc, All apps look on 55-inch TV as on a giant cellphone, no way to scale

Xsbox S805 runs Kodi very well.
I have 3 of them & no problems at all.Also almost £10 cheaper than this.

Wall PSU is provided in Sumvision retail box. Believe the wall PSU is rated at 2amps output; it is highly unlikely that a reliable and capable power source could be obtained from any USB data socket.

I believe one of the greatest challenges to these boxes is 10bit x265 playback, for which my generic S905-based box with 1GB RAM is flawless. I don't feel the need to match the 2GB RAM of my S812 box. I assume another demanding application may be gaming, but I can't comment about any potential benefit of 2GB on an S905 for gaming cos I don't use any Android box for games.
