Originally released as Lylat Wars in Europe, Star Fox 64's release to the Wii U Virtual Console, in advance of the upcoming Star Fox Zero, was always pretty much inevitable - and Nintendo UK have just confirmed on Twitter that we'll see the game released this coming Thursday, 24 March.
As also just announced on Twitter, there will be a 50% discount in effect for the initial release, up until 21 April (with Star Fox Zero released the following day, on 22 April) - so this will be an ideal way to get yourself ready for this upcoming new release!
The standard price of N64 games on the Virtual Console is £8.99, so this discount will reduce the price to £4.49.
If you already own the game on the Wii Virtual Console, a discounted price of £1.79 should apply instead (it's unclear if this will *also* be discounted by 50%, but I doubt it).

surely whether it's worth it or not should be down to how playable it still is. If you're going to get even as little as 4 hours play out of this, just over £1 per hour to be entertained seems ok to me.
I reckon I'll be investing.

Worth more than a £1 surely
Probably off topic but sometimes I feel it's not useful to depreciate games based on the length of time they've been around. Don't get me wrong, I love things to be cheap otherwise I wouldn't frequent this site but surely not all things have a completely downward depreciation? Especially if some are trying to argue that games are art? And we're really not getting a 1:1 experience since there are a couple of added features that help like save states and miiverse

Typical, the minimum eshop purchase to earn you any My Nintendo points is £4.50! I'll expect there to be lots more eshop games priced at £4.49...

No, there's no straightforward way to 'convert' a 4:3 presentation of a game to 16:9, at least not for console games. The best that you could do would be to get your TV to stretch or zoom/crop the image - neither of which I'd recommend.
120Hz is something that you may find fairly frequently with TV refresh rates, but very few console games of any generation will run at 120fps (Hz and fps are pretty much interchangeable units, just commonly used in different contexts) - I'm not aware of any. Frankly, I'd be surprised if many people can tell much, if any, difference between 60fps and 120fps.

Thank you for your answers. What i am trying to find out is, as like in this case, if a game has ben amde in 4:3 ration can in then not be converted to 16:9 i a quick efficient way so does not require a load of reprogramming as in almost like writing the game alll over again, as the 4:3 ratio in this game here spoils the experience for myself personally. Finally how does one tell if a game is running at 120fps-is that similar to a game trying to to run at 60hz or are they unrelated.
Illusionary
27 Mar 16#65
Some can tell the difference, some can't (personally, I don't tend to notice small framerate differences). One thing to note is that the refresh rate is often directly tied to how fast the game runs, so a given sequence will complete more quickly with the 60Hz version of a game.
It would help if you could explain what ultimately it is that you're concerned about here, so that we can best answer your question/offer reassurance.

Thanks mate i thought something similar but was not quite sure. Whats always baffles me though is the 50hz & 60hz diff, how can you tell if a game is only 50hz rather than 60hz-and is that related to a games being run at 120fps which seems to be the "benchmark" for gamers- sorry i have googled this before but was none the wiser
Illusionary
27 Mar 16#63
Refresh rate and image ratio are unrelated. Almost all N64 games were released in 4:3 ratio, including Star Fox 64.
As above, this release is for the US version, Star Fox 64, and hence is 60Hz. If it was 50Hz, you'd see it titled Lylat Wars.

Anyonw who has purchased this, can they plz confirm if this is indeed 50hz or 60hz, as the pictures and the trailer in the eshop show black bars on the left and right of the screen (like 4:3 ratio) which makes me think this is not a full screen game (guessing that 50hz has back bars and 60 hz is full screen with no black bars) and that 50hz is 4:3 ratio whilst 60hz is 16:9 ratio, or have i got this all wrong?

I have to agree, I mean... Just because some people are getting all giddy and nostalgic, however at least this it is a deal though as it is 50% off.
But when someone posted the Day of the tentacle remastered "deal" the other day and people were voting hot, just for nostalgic reasons, was stupid as it wasn't really a deal being so close to RRP.
Try searching that on Google(In the main page write do a barrel roll and press the enter key).

I suspect the custom chip Starwing had is yet to be replicated in emulation (at least officially).

SuperFX chip would need to get licensed, because it was developed by Argonaut games and that company was bought up by some other crappy company, that probably wants trillions for it.
That's also why we haven't gotten Yoshi's Island for SNES yet.

How do the save states work? I've got this on the Wii Virtual Console but would be tempted to get it for the Wii U part if you can come and go from your progress (particularly if you opt for the hard route). If it just allows to you resume once, not so sure.
