The thinnest LCD TVs tend to be edge-lit (in order to attain that thinness) which results in poor backlight uniformity. People demanding thin TVs thin bezels etc instead of features that improve PQ is part of the reason why most sets nowadays are so awful.

You can't compare two different brands on the listed hz - no two companies have ever measured it in the same way. No other country even bothers to list it on tickets because it's meaningless. Samsung and LG have even come up with their own BS terminology for it now (I think it's PQI for Samsung and PMI for LG - neither of which means anything). If you sit the three models side by side and run the same fast content on them all simultaneously, the Samsung and LG will make you feel nauseated; the Sony, although not as good as their higher-end models (for which you of course pay more) looks far better.

13 Mar 16#113
it's direct lit. which is why it's thicker. it also why it has better more even lighting and less light bleed than the super thin edge lit alternatives. so it is thicker, because it allows a better contrast ratio from more precise local dimming.....

I never said it would be. Point was never about that though it was purely about a 4K TV being "future proof" which again - it won't be. Just as you can already buy 4K mastered blu-rays right now I'm pretty sure 8K ones will pop up - and blu-rays are the main reason I'd want an 8K TV anyway - not really too fussed about not seeing Eastenders in 8K but again that's wandering off the point.

Got this same model on the Amazon deal a couple of weeks ago, had to send it back as the consistent freezes and crashes were a joke. Updates didn't help. There's a lot of other people with the same issue which is why they are being sold off so cheap. I've noticed that Amazon have deleted all the recent bad reviews saying the same thing so be warned. If you can live with that then also be warned don't get it if you watch any sd channels, as the picture is almost unwatchable. Shame as the hd and 4K picture was lovely.
BadPseudonym to andrewspnc
12 Mar 16#100
The latest update (this week) fixes those issues. SD content is upscaled on Sony 4K better than on any other brand this year, without exception, but any larger screen will show up the poor quality of SD; it's the content, not the display. They're being 'sold off so cheap' because it's the end of the annual cycle - new models are on the horizon. Not because there's anything wrong with them.

The slimmer they are, the more they cost, though. This is a deal because of its price. If you want super slim, how about the Sony X90? At 49mm it's (almost certainly) slimmer than your mobile, but for a 55" will be roughly £1,299.

I bought a Sony Bravia 52" in October 2009 and I'm not joking when I unboxed it, it was one of the ugliest TV's imaginable. To top it off the hadn't even stuck the word "SONY" on the front of the screen straight. It was a £1300 TV at the time and it was also the last Sony product I ever bought. 12 Mar 16#78
Superb price, i thought i'd got it for a bargain at £599 a while back but this is just superb.
A few things for you to think about for this TV.
CONS
The Android system is poor even with the latest update which came out last week. Not a problem for me as i connect my PC to the tv and don't bother with the inbuilt smart stuff.
Standard definition is not good at all......but then who watches SD these days so not a big issue.
Playing any game that's not 60 mhz is a write off....don't even bother. Even in Game mode, it's a train wreck. Thankfully more and more games are coming out with 60 mhz
PRO'S
4k content looks sensational. Don't be fooled into thinking there's hardly any content out there. There's absolutely tons of it available via a PC...so think about getting a 4k capable PC hooked up to it.....which should be a must with this or any other 4k tv
1080p looks blissful
The blacks are the best i've seen on a tv
Inbuilt WIFI
60mhz games at 1080p or 4k looks and play amazingly well
Bags of connections
All-in-all an truly breathtaking TV foe the price listed here. Sure there are better TV's out there.....but not for this price.
In short......go balls-deep on this one.....you won't regret it.

49" is edge lit LG panel, the 55" is back lit. Still an excellent picture though and this is a good price with the excellent Costco warranty.
My home experience is of the 49"X83 which is basically the same TV with a faster "motion flow". Both of these are now HDR enabled since October firmware, the panels are not 10bit but even so they play HDR with a marked improvement in contrast, most noticeable for me is metallic colours such as gold or silver which really stand out in HDR files.
Two significant Android updates have been issued this year already, the last being this Tuesday and it's now a really good system. There is still work in progress and Sony support told me this week that the 2016s will have the same version of Android as now then the 2015s and 2016s will be upgraded to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow).
There aren't many if any other TVs at this price point which have two Digital and two Satellite tuners built in. The 2 Astra 4K demo channels are well worth taking a look at, incredibly detailed pictures.
I spoke to an online support guy about that and he arranged a returns pickup. They got it next day and got my money back a couple of days later. It's their fault for supplied this faulty to so dam right they should do. Making it appear that it's not an option is another sneaky Amazon trick

OK, now I have a stupid question....
Are TVs like this able to display 4K from the apps like Amazon Fire/youtube/netflix (susbcription/internet speed dependant)? Or is it only via HDMI/USB?
I'm torn between this because I like the idea of an Android TV (yes I read to naysayers views) and a 50" cheapo 1080p like the (proper) Panny posted yesterday. The intention is to upgrade to OLED at some point in a couple of years or so anyway.
But I'm not interested in Sky Q (which will do UHD eventually) and UHD DVD players are a bit pricey for the time being...hence the question regarding other 4K sources.

Do Sony screens still have that weird line running from top to bottom in the middle of the screen?
I am getting used to the model up from this tv, I read all the reviews complaining about android, but I am quite happy with it. I was toying between 4k and 1080p set, and wondering if going for 4k was right move. The 1080p set was about £180 cheaper, and while the technology is in its infancy, I feel thats not too much of a difference to enjoy 4k for five years. Not much content around at the moment, but that will change. I was dis-appointed this doesn't support HDR, as that to me looks like a firmware restriction as the x1 processor is same. I am not sure HDR will live up to the expectations, looks good on paper, but is dependent on content; I am sure it looks great on all the demos, but will this technology be about in 3 years time. The youview is slow, but you can disable that and the standard tv guide is very fast.
Although, thicker is probably heavier & at this size, playing real racing 3 is really gonna strain your arms

phone irrelevant. It means its got android operating system on the tv, so you can use play store to download apps/games and sideload things, basically it opens the tv up to a lot of possibilites by using apps.
E.G. you could install the sky news app, or TED apps, and control them easily using the tv remote etc on the big screen.

When the tv is sitting on my tv cabinet, it must look sexy, razor thin like most tv's are nowadays. 4.7cm to 8cm is a big difference to me, thats 3.7cm of nasty bulk that just doesn't need to be there. Imagine wall mounting it, do you want it sticking out an extra 3.7cm, i certainly dont. Your standards are obviously lower than mine :-)

Looks lovely up on the wall, but can't comment on anything else yet, as the software is still updating!
My mistake not available online (I misinterpreted Concierge Services) however I bought mine in Chingford store today and it's available in store until 4th April 2016.
Edit : Wow what else is sensored : ass, bottom, poophole

Great all round model.[/quote]
Can you share more information? I am interested in either the Sony or Samsung UE48JU6400. I'm replacing a CRT JVC TV and completely clueless....

Hopefully you can add membership at time of purchase.
At least that's how I read it. Might be wrong

Sorry read it as HD Record and that was on the latest update not High Dynamic Range, have looked at several forums and this set may struggle with it..
Thanks!

The 50inch non 4k Panasonic set on hukd right now is only 4.9cm.
Maybe a lot of the 4k sets are fat, but i would prefer it to be much thinner.

Just hope the disaster that was Sony centre refunds the broken refurb they sold me quickly as the credit card is taking a battering
What I don't get is...why do manufacturers these days make odd sizes, eg, 49 inches? Why not just round it to 50?
Costco within a hundred miles
Does anyone know if it support x265 playback from a memory stick.
If so does it work ok?
Are TVs like this able to display 4K from the apps like Amazon Fire/youtube/netflix (susbcription/internet speed dependant)? Or is it only via HDMI/USB?
I'm torn between this because I like the idea of an Android TV (yes I read to naysayers views) and a 50" cheapo 1080p like the (proper) Panny posted yesterday. The intention is to upgrade to OLED at some point in a couple of years or so anyway.
But I'm not interested in Sky Q (which will do UHD eventually) and UHD DVD players are a bit pricey for the time being...hence the question regarding other 4K sources.

sony piece of crap
Is it speedy enough?
And where do the apps install to, does it have inbuilt memory or can you put an sd card in?
Thanks
If you have ever had android phone before and put apps on it then this TV is like that, you can get to app store on in and instalk apps/games just like you do with your phone. Just Google Android TV box, this bt does the same thing but instead of a separate android TV box it has this hardware already built in.
E.G. you could install the sky news app, or TED apps, and control them easily using the tv remote etc on the big screen.
I have never had a sony android tv myself, does it run kodi well or is it laggy? Whats the processor in these things like to say an amazon fire stick, and what memory do they have or can you insert an sd card?
Sounds fun!

Im deciding between this and http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/panasonic-tx-50cs520b-50-inch-smart-hd-led-tv-southern-electric-sse-including-5-2411224 which isnt 4k, i dont know if i really want or need 4k as i dont have any device that can play 4k at the moment.
