It is a really good price but I would recommend buying the same calculator used by the school/class teacher.

Again, with respect, this is another rather silly argument. I bought one of these for my 11 year old (primary school age) son from Argos a few months ago (for a few pounds, like this offer). He is quite able to locate the number buttons (easy, they have the numbers written on then) and function keys (again easy, they have the functions printed on them), press them in the correct order and read the screen (which shows what he has typed in and the numerical answer). He certainly didn't read any 50 page manuals (I doubt that it came with one, and if it did it would not have been opened). This is a calculator: no more difficult to use than a watch (and perhaps easier than a set of logarithmic tables).

With respect: that is a pretty bogus argument. The function buttons always do the same thing, and all calculators will give the same result (certainly within the scope of a GCSE test) given the same data and functions.
If a person is that close to failing an exam then an abacus would be as much use to him/her as a calculator.

I used Sharp right through school upto Alevel and was fine but things have probably changed if Casio ones are recommended now as its been well over a decade since I left.

don't waste your money if this is for a child/teen in school/collage. they will need a Casio fx98 as all the exam boards and schools are built around them

Yep, that Casio has been on the 'things you need to buy' list over the last decade, when my kids started senior school.

Casio is most common place in schools and colleges I have worked and we have a virtual one on the board so that the students can see exactly what to press. In saying that, this is a great price for the calculator and student should cope fine with the minor differences.

no but sometimes functions are hard to find easily and if you have the same calculator it's easier to follow how to do some more complex processes rather than getting out the 50 page manual to try and understand how to do something.

It's the same on this one, and most recent Sharp calculators.
I bought this as a replacement for an older Sharp EL-531VH calculator, it was the cheapest in Argos but not this cheap.
The buttons on this are sharper and more square so they're not as 'nice' to press but after a bit of getting used to it does the job. It has more functions on it than the older model, but way more than you'll need for A level maths.

I must say that from experience the Casio ones are much better for kids. Reason being you can literally type an equation in how it looks.

I hope not!
Worst case scenario - the battery on this calculator stops working in the exam. The school give a casio one (used in class) to your child and they are not very familiar with it. They lose marks as they don't know how to use it properly and potentially miss out on their target grade.
