After having paid off my balance and cancelling my contract, I have now received an email from 02 stating: "Your bill for 03/04/16 comes to £360.19"
Called up and they said they will send a note to back office to cancel the bill but can take 3 working days.
Was getting an unmarked refurbished handset with 12 months warranty from a shop but went for this hoping no issues.

You'd be doing will to find one with an equally good camera & 4k recording, IP67 water resistance, Super AMOLED screen, expandable memory, user replaceable battery, fingerprint reader and a comparable chipset for the same money.
Maybe an obscure china brand on a grey import, but don't forget that the S5 was a flagship model retailing for over £550 less than two years ago.

definitely not. Vodafone smart ultra 6 is the best budget phone but screen is not as good although bigger. Camera not as good either

Thanks guys, I followed the steps but they needed to confirm that the phone was associated with the contract so had to activate the Sim. called back after 24hrs and payed for the Handset £120 + arranged for it to be unlocked. Called again (opt. 4) to cancel the contract - make sure you tell them that you have purchased the Handset. The refresh contract will be canceled in 7 days time will be confirmed via email (normal its a 30 day notice period). The Deal is still on the website.

OK, I received the handset today, went onto webchat and requested unlock code.
Was advised it will come through in 7 days time!
Phoned 03448 090 202 and asked to pay off my devise plan (£120). Received email confirmation.
Made separate call to say I wanted to cancel my Refresh call plan. Was only asked questions as they could see that I had just called before and so was confusing why the call plan was not cancelled at the same time as paying off the devise plan. After clarification, the call plan was cancelled. No notification received yet. Was told that the sim will stop working in a couple of hours (I have not activated anyway). Was advised that I will receive final bill after 14 days and will be charged pro-rata for usage. I assume that will be £0 as not even activated and cancelled on same day as received.
As said, handset look mint.... However, on enquiry I have been advised it is nearly 2 years old.

I'm using a refurb s5 from O2 and it's grand now. Had to return for a repair after a month as the sound went. My brother in law got 2 and both had to be returned due to the same problem. Very hit and miss.

Pay off the balance then cancel. I did it in two calls, just for clarity, to avoid that bit of unnecessary discussion.

So I just ordered a handset as per guidance. Delivery has been rescheduled for Thu instead of Wed. So do I have to wait for the delivery before initiating the cancellation process?
Once delivered, I:
1. Use web chat (is there a form?) to unlock handset FOC
2. Make one call (number) to cancel the contract and pay off the balance.
I understand that there is no need to activate the sim?
Who covers the 12 month warranty onwards?

Its a shame this is an incredible spec handset in such a cheap feeling handset. My old S5 did absolutely everything I threw at it, but always felt budget in the hand.

You can cancel the contract and pay the phone in one go, no need to wait. There is no penalty to be paid. It won't affect your credit rating in any way. You can unlock the phone using the chat on O2's website. You have 12 months warranty if I remember correctly, but don't quote me on that.

Pretty sure you have to give 30 days notice on the airtime. So you may be charged one months airtime charge

You don't have to give 30 days notice, and if you haven't activated and used your new sim, you will not be charged.

hi guys sorry am new to this O2 refresh.
I was told by O2 on chat that I can only cancel after 14 days, as 14 days is the returning period and if I cancel within 14 days, I'll have to return the phone as well.
Doesn't sound right to me but could some guru please confirm if that is actually the case?

You can cancel anytime you want. You will have the option to return the phone, or pay it off, which in this case will be a one off payment of £120.
It's one phone call, no one suggested saving money was easy(though maybe not worth the great effort on this occasion). ;-)

to help clarify this - the tariff is not £5 - the device plan is £5 per month on top of the £39.99 upfront, plus you will then have an airtime plan as well, starting at £18 per month - so total of £23 per month plus £39.99 upfront
damadgeruk to love_a_deal

Cancel the airtime, pay off the device plan and you have the price quoted by the OP. Same way o2 refresh deals have worked for years.
