Not German with chrome and masses of led lights...cold...for most!

However, great drivers car - makes your bum hurt a bit on poor roads :-)

More than makes your bum hurt. Got given a normal megane as a company car. Most uncomfortable car I've ever had the displeasure of driving. The seat, wheel and pedals are all out of alignment due to a poor, cheap right hand drive conversion. That's without getting onto the touch screen satnav you can't actually reach!

I've driven many, many cars and apart from a Matiz, the megane is the worst car ever.

God knows why there are so many on the road, people clearly don't test drive and are just attracted by the massive discounts that they have to offer to sell the dam things!

Rant over!

Can't comment on long term ownership. I've had a go in an older version of this and loved the way it felt - direct steering, plenty of feel and lots of grip. Exceptional for a hatch. But agree, I'd avoid Renault if parting with my own cash!

absolute nonsense. Had a megane in Spain last year as a hire car was a really nice drive. Also had a focus hire car in Ireland and a Leon courtesy car after an accident and although they are all very different inside ride quality is very similar. My favourite of the 3 was the Leon but that was only due to it being fully specced out.

22 Mar 16 #14
Not really - The Wheel, Seat and Pedal are all out of alignment with each other. Couldn't drive for more than an hour to an hour and a half without having to stop and get out. The i40 that they replaced it with I can do a 4 hour trip to Glasgow none stop in it. Also my previous Octavia I could easily do a 4 hour+ journey without having to stop and no doubt it will be the same for my Golf R when I go away in that as that is one of the most comfortable seats I have sat in (bar an Old Vauxhall Omega Elite which was unbelievably comfortable!)

How do people see out of these things?? Seriously, I hired one in France and the 'A' pillar is so thick and steeply inclined that it was really hard to place on twisty roads. Ok, I'm tall, unlike most French drivers, I guess, but it was a menace. The blind spot on acute junctions was easily big enough to hide a motorbike. Do the designers ever leave their CAD screens and actually drive them on real roads? Took the hire car back after a week and exchanged it for a Polo. *So* much better ...

If you are 18 maybe but not if you are a grown up so a bit of a stupid point.

As for the car being a Renault, Renault now share many parts with Honda probably the most reliable manufacturer in the world. More over, most cars these days are built with parts made by outside manufacturers so almost all share parts. Just look how crap the Germans have become at making cars, VW's these days are just cheap skodas underneath, you just pay for a badge and a suit.

Anyway, isn't this actually a Nissan?

wonder if they worked out how to make them water tight in this version.

my mrs' big ar*e 55 plate megane leaked really badly. rain water in door pockets and in footwell. 3 of the 4 electric windows failed due to water ingress. alarm would go off randomly.

(and yes, she does have a big ar*e too!)
MaximusRo to YourUserNameIsTaken
23 Mar 16 #63
Common issue on the Megane, water in door pockets comes from the mirrors, and through your speaker, ruining it in the process.
Water on the floor carpets: check the water drain below the windshield, you can access it from outside, not very complicated, needs to be cleaned, and you can fit something on it to keep out the leafes and other things that clogged it

Speaking of car insurance, my first car was a 20-year-old Ford Fiesta with no power steering, drum brakes from the Stone Age and a manual pump for the window washer. I paid £200 for that car in about 2003. It cost me over £100 per MONTH to insure, and the stereo system was worth five times that of the whole car.

What a beast she was, too. All 25 horse powers of her!!!

good deal for those who want the most fun car on the road, really does make you smile when you drive it over the twisties. At least its better looking and less bland than the golf r or s3 and will return over 30mpg unlike the other two just mentioned. I've had nothing break on my rs250 in the past 15 months so can vouch for Renault being fairly reliable.
jrw to mantamagic
23 Mar 16 #61
haha - you think this has better MPG that the S3 or the R?

I had the 1.5DCI that claimed 87MPG, couldn't get more than 60mpg and the average was 47mpg.

I can get 41mpg on my R on a run and that only has 300 miles on the clock so far! Avg of 30mpg. When it is run in I expect that average to increase to 35mpg.

Buy a car or lease a car it's all the same. You lose money. With leasing you know exactly how much you are going to lose up front. The question is whether you will lose less buying or leasing.
The golf r is my first lease and if I get another deal like that I'll jump at another one.

What a lot on uninformed tosh on here.

I just sold my Megane RS250, after 4 years of ownership, in that time it went wrong NEVER. It was my second Megane RS as well, and that one went wrong NEVER.

In 4 years it depreciated from £17k to £13.5k, with me adding 28k miles on it.

I'm also 6ft 3 and never had a problem with the A pillar

I also used to regularly drive it the 250 odd mile trip to Lincolnshire to see my parents and my bum never hurt, and the kids were happy in the back, and the dog could lay in the boot.

Also neither of mine leaked water.

If I hadn't just leased a car, I would snap this up.

People who know nothing about cars or leases need to go back to the burrows and stop commenting on things they know nothing about

This ^^ Had my Megane coupe for 2 years, done over 30k on it and have had 0 issues. It breezed through it's MOTs and is extremely comfortable to drive. To top it off it's only depreciated 2k in the time I've owned it. The amount of car snobbery on here is humorous to say the least, I forget every HUKD owner is on 100k a year and only drives new German motors. The newer Renaults are extremely reliable and offer a plethora of tech/extras compared to similarly priced motors.

I get 30.4 mpg out my rs250 with bluefin. evo doubted the economy on there test golf R which was reading 41mpg on the trip. manual fill and calculation over a tank showed 25mpg in reality. seems VW are fudging figures again!
jrw
23 Mar 16 #67
Doubt that very much on the evo part. I filled up my first tank and Fuelly said 28mpg (VW gave me a full tank but I guess it wasn't quite full and left running for hours on end whilst they prepped it) and my Trip counter said 27.6mpg so I would say that is pretty much spot on. Trouble with the R not living up to its mpg expectation is wanton need to hoon it everywhere  I am sure I will calm down over the next few tanks and a real test for it will be when I go to Goodwood FOS to see what a motorway cruise can achieve although it will have a stage 1 by then!
mantamagic
23 Mar 16 #68
Seems it's worse than I thought, Unless you drive a Golf R like a grandad, you ain't going to get 40mpg!
Golf R Manual 6 Speed 4wd
Auto Express econ (mpg/mpl)/range 26.8/5.9/324 miles
Govt urban/extra-urban/combined 30.1/47.9/39.8mpg
As expected, real world figure 10-15% worse than manufacturers!
jrw
23 Mar 16 #69
I did a 20 drive down an a road last weekend, free flowing doing 60 all the way and got 41mpg. This is a car with 250 miles on the clock. Would say it's pretty easy to obtain the book figures once run in and I've got used to the car.

Book figures I could never reach in the megane, and I mean driving like a granddad I was still 25% off their figures and I know how to hyper mile. Similar story with the hyundai I have. Think that quotes 72 or 67 mpg and have never bettered 55mpg.

Fuelly and the like are good indicators to real world figures anyway no magazine tests. They're always much lower as the usually have multiple drivers, loaded with equipment, thrashed from new and it's scientifically proven that if the driver ain't paying for the fuel then the car gets a lower mpg

So a 4wd car, driving 4 wheels and having 300bhp is supposed to give better economy than a 2wd car with 275bhp. Do the maths! Golf fanboys can be so stupid, must be driving round in a square box for so long! Be jealous of the Megane RS, best hot hatch for 4 years running! In fact lets just take the comment from wikipedia :
The Renault Mégane Renault Sport or Mégane RS is a series of hot hatch models based on the Renault Mégane, designed and built by French automaker Renault since 2004. The Mégane RS won many awards like five times in a row the "Best hot hatch" from What car? (2010–2014), "Highest placed non-supercar" in Evo’s annual Car of the Year test 2011 and "Best hot hatch" from Top Gear.[1]

Yes I reckon it is better. It's a better engine.

Proven by the fact my old heavy 2.0 170 brake dsg octavia vrs used to get higher mpg than my 1.5 megane with all this eco guff tech. Used to get 52 mpg all day long without trying. 47 mpg in my eco megane.

You do the math. See fuelly. Real world, not forum world figures. I'll stick to my German engineering instead of the French fag packet engineering thanks.

Just seen 35 mpg actually doing a 70 mile round trip in traffic and mix of motorways, 30, 40, 50, 60 roads. 400 miles in now.

Evo mag said the trip computer was lying. Trip computer tells you what you want to think it's doing MPG wise, but in reality it's 10% worse. So 30mpg on round trip ain't that great. I would be interested to see what the new Focus RS does mpg wise, that would be the car to go for lease wise at the moment. I own my car, so got to keep it for a while longer. I had a Megane RS before this one which got written off, so great I had to have another one. You got to have the leather Recaro's though, best seats ever in a road car!
jrw
28 Mar 16 #81
as I said in a previous comment, I compared it on my first fill up and it was pretty much spot on with the trip computer.

Don't believe everything you read. No manufacturers cars in magazine long term drivers ever get near their mpg figures, as I said before, they have different drivers, probably normal fuel and are usually full of equipment as they are usually kit cars for the main event photoshoots they do. Also most of them spend their time in London sitting in traffic.

As i also said, look at fuelly if you want proper figures.

Seriously, anyone saying a Megane RS250/260/275 is apalling has never owned one or even driven one.
So that makes you a lying son of a bitch.
No other car has won best hot hatch 5 years in a row. It looks great, drives great and is reliable.
Enjoy your boring Golf R, could have been so good. Shame about the wheels, headlamps, tailights, styling, or lack of should I say. I use to be Mr Average, but then I realised I wanted the best handling hot hatch. I loved the look of the Astra VXR GTC, but knew it handled poorly and did not put the power down. Once I had driven a Megane, that's it I was sold. Just like the time I went to look at a Boxster. Don't do bland anymore, which is why my next car will probably be a Cayman S.
jrw
29 Mar 16 #85
Ah right, so when you run out of 'facts' to back up an argument you turn to insults. That's about right.

I've had a megane, not the rs but a megane all the same. Couldn't spend more than an hour a time in it without being in agony. So unless they've moved the physical position of the seat, the pedals and the wheel it would be a similar story in the rs.

Standard wheels on the golf are awful, that's why I ordered it with the 19s and the dynamic chassis control. Everyone I know (and that's a real critical bunch) loves the car, the subtle styling and especially the wheels, the double U headlights and the super smoked tail lights.

I can also reach the sat nav too without having to undo my seat belt

If the golf is so boring and bland.. then why does it win every group test going for the last two years, with only the new focus rs giving it any hint of competition?

I mean, who wouldn't want 275 horses just through the front wheels!

Enjoy your plastic toy :smirk:
