Lots of the models previously posted are back in stock! Probably not many of each available.

"Refurbished models are products returned to Sony under the following circumstances: change of mind, faulty out of box, box damage or minor cosmetic imperfections. These products will be fully tested and repaired where necessary by an authorised repair centre. Whilst many of these products will be in as good as new condition, we cannot guarantee refurbished products sold will be delivered in the original packaging and may have minor cosmetic imperfections such as scratches, marks or discoloration. All refurbished products come with a minimum 12 months manufacturer's warranty."

Will put some links in first post.

Like all refurbishment items it's hit and miss unfortunately because you can get a unit with hidden fault or new unit that someone just return(very unlikely but it happens).
They don't check this more than 5-10 minutes if it works than pack back to box and its stamped everything ok.

Ordered the 55xd509 but cancelled due to the horror stories that are on the Sony forum. £599 was a great price, and good reviews for picture quality, but didn't want the risk. Prefer to spend more on something that works. Plus not true HDR, 8bit panel, and no hdmi 2.0a, so only available from streaming sources. Good prices though so heat.

I'm another one waiting to return faulty TV, it did work fine for 5 mins!!

That's a chance we take buying refurbished TVs from this site. However really not the easiest site to deal with for sorting out returns. Would I purchase buy another one from this site....still not sure if its worth all the hassle, especially as there does seem a particularly high percentage of their refurbished TVs not working.

Edit: excuse the rant, just went off on one without thinking.

"Refurbished" is a total gamble with Sony, I'm not even sure they bother giving them a quick wipe down; they certainly don't do any repairs. Most of the time, you have to just hope that whatever the set they send you has wrong with it doesn't bother you as much as the person who returned it. One of the sets they sent me had a huge bend in the side, spectacularly deforming the backlight, and a massive hole in the bottom. The one I settled with always thinks it has headphones plugged in and so has to have the detection of them turned off in the settings. Still got one sitting waiting for someone to collect nearby a fortnight after requesting a return.

Which is wonderful when the store's told you they'd contact you beforehand to let you know when it'd be. It's not like most people can just take days on end off work just in case the courier arrives.

Not sure if any of these are that good a price.

1080p tv's are getting old now, by next year they will become less and less available brand new and i reckon they will be around this price brand new - they will feel very old tech come next year. Regardless of the argument that there isnt much content, manufacturers are putting all efforts into 4k now , I dont know if they will still make 40"+ 1080 sets come 2017. Obviously at around the 32" and under level 1080 will be the norm.

4k's are getting increasingly cheaper, im think im going to run my 1080 set for another year then go up to the one of next years 4k sets. Im not sure its a good time to buy a 4k set either at its pretty early days and they are only going to get better, hence why im waiting at least another year for a 4k set, but no big worries as I already have a 4 year old 1080 Sony which does the job.

I laughed at the 720p 32" set they are selling for £149, plenty of brand new 1080 sets from lg and samsung for £200 or under brand new.
pops1975 to usman330

The 50 inch sets are cheaper at Currys - £569. Not such a good deal really for those sets.

That's a lovely story. My 42" 720p Sammy Plasma has a picture quality which positively p****s on the majority of LED TVs currently available, resolution aside. Give my HDR over 4k any day
As the majority of material I watch is still SD, it does a far better job of upscaling to 720p (which looks great from 8 feet away) than SD material does on the current crop of full HD and 4k boxes.
Once the majority of material moves to HD I may reconsider. That or the Sammy packs up.
hcc27 to usman330
15 Mar 16 #33
Fully agree. No matter what the gurus say about not being able to differentiate PQ between a 50 inch 4K vs 1080p panel from a 'normal' viewing distance, I can.

I'm waiting for the 4K OLED 55 inchers to come down in price, will buy with a 5 year warranty from either JL or RS and spread the cost with a 0% interest credit card over 20 months or so. I spend a few hours in front of the TV everyday, if I keep it for 5 years a sub- £2000 4K 55 inch OLED TV (prices appear to be headed towards that direction by end-year) will cost me around a quid per day. It's not a bad price to pay for future proof tech that will make you smile every time you watch a movie.

I won't be taking a punt on a £600 refurb with a 1 year warranty which may need replacement every few years due to breakdowns not being covered by the shorter warranty. Just too much hassle and grief for me.

Horses for courses of course. For the price this is a good deal if you get a good 'un, you accept its limitations AND it lasts 4-5 years, hence heated.

Mine arrived and discovered over the weekend and found serious fault in the panel, not just minor cosmetic issue. Possibly down to courier mishandling. The packaging for tv was ridiculous, and was loose in the box, with metal stand badly scratching the tv. Hoping to get a refund sorted, has been a very stressful experience.

Also not impressed with the performance, it is 4k tv, but I feel picture on my 5 year old set (panel has failed) was better, and that was old lcd technology and basic 1080p model. There are firmware limitations, if you enable youview which is very sluggish, you can't use hdd recording or the satellite inputs.

Looks very stylish though

If I was to buy a 'ordinary' 43-50" 1080 HD Television, which model or manufacturer should I go for. LG, Samsung, Sony and Panasonic. Be careful with Panasonic, some of the models are rebadged as Panasonic but are actually interior Vestel sets made in Turkey.

To be honest, you have to look at the individual model number. A lot of the lower end sets like these Sony’s have issues or are simply ‘budget’ sets, made for a price for the masses. However some of the models can be good, it just takes time reading up on the actual model number or series the TV comes from.

As an example, there was a very nice Panasonic 50” on here a few days ago, the panel in it had been reviewed excellently and it looked a real good set, it was £351 brand new delivered, I would say better than these Sony sets as it looks reliable, sold out now though:

I've received mine from the last time it was posted (XBR55X850C at £549).

I had a nightmare trying to pair the remote. I'm a web developer and I just couldn't find out anything on how to reset etc. Once I got that done (Hold down input on the back of the set for 5 seconds if you are wondering) it was a long set up process but the wait was worth it. It's a lovely set and I got kodi installed within moments. Mine was packaged in a new box.

Only complaint was it didn't have batteries for the remote and I was out of AAA.

Just to balance out some of the bad experiences - some of which are properly awful! - mine arrived in its original box in mint condition with only a slight mark on the back of the remote. The picture is fine, albeit with some slightly uneven backlighting which is only really noticeable when the screen is almost completely black, but is probably why it was returned. For, say, £500, I'd have sent it back too, but for £270 for a set to tide me over until 4K and HDR mature I think it's a bit of a bargain.

I would say that Sony seem unable to keep up with the orders, probably because of the systems they have in place.

Systems seem antiquated - very little communication between those taking orders, those processing the orders & those fulfilling & despatching the orders.

Either those checking the TVs are clearly NOT checking them or those loading the TVs up and or the delivery teams are being very negligent in their duties.

I cant imagine broken TVs being sent out by Sony.

Wonder if Sony are looking at this really high rate of failure?

Up until a few months ago there used to be a Sony Outlet site selling refurbished Sony products. Deliveries came from a company called Yussen Logistics. I ordered a about 10 different things from them. (Nothing as physically large as a TV though.) They were very good to deal with. The items ranged from those that appeared brand new in the box to repackaged items. I did return a couple of things - one for a repair and a couple because I changed my mind and they were dealt with very well. They had a central phone number and there was no dealing with a Sony store.

It appears that they have revived the Sony Outlet concept but run it in a different way with it being tied to individual stores. It is not acceptable if you order without knowing where the store is and then are expected to return it yourself for a refund!

Still coming from a central warehouse handled by Yussan but an individual store is allocated to deal with the order. Now had a few items from the new system and all came in as new condition in original boxes.

The only difference between the old website and the new one is that Sony have outsourced the customer contact to its franchisees rather than dealing with it themselves.

After I posted earlier that I was pretty happy with my KDL43W809CBU, I've decided to return it. One issue by itself wouldn't have been enough, but there have been too many niggles over the four days I've had it. Shame, because without the following problems, the picture is actually pretty good (smearing issues in dark scenes aside).

There's a fair amount of uneven screen backlighting visible on dark screens (the patch was about 10cm x 20cm), a dark patch near the logo and a bright spot of light just to its left on light screens, it locked up for 60 seconds more than a few times when changing settings, switched itself on once during the night, and I couldn't get casting to any of the apps working properly or reliably. In isolation, any one of the faults would've been liveable, but as I have a habit of waiting 8 years between new TVs, I wanted to take my chances with a different one.

Shame, as it was a bargain price, but I think I'd rather pay more for a new set from RS or JL.

Speaking of which, any suggestions for decent 42/43" screens? Not fussed about 4K at all, so a decent old 1080P model on clearance would be fine.

Mine was from the Bath store, and they gave me an email address to write to and said they'd arrange collection. I've emailed it, so as far as I'm concerned I'm within the distance selling window in case there's any problems. They seemed perfectly helpful on the phone, as they did when I was buying it, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

17 Mar 16 #119
I am not sure that buying a new one would make much difference. Clouding backlights have been a very common issue with the thin C range Sonys. The other issues such as the TV not responding and switching itself on appear to be common with issues with the implementation of the Android OS by Sony as they are frequently reported issues with new sets as well. Some people have speculated that the Sony sets have been delivered with processors that are simply not up to the job. Not sure what the evidence for that is though.

17 Mar 16 1 #121
It is a shame as using Android seems like the best possible solution for a TV OS as you are then not dependent upon the TV manufacturer continuing to update the sets firmware as things develop. However, I am not sure if the issue has been Sony's implementation or the underlying Android TV platform. Watching the AV Forums threads there have been a number of firmware updates but the whole things still does not seem very stable. Will be interesting to see if this years D range are any better.

It's not a bad idea, actually. I think I'm going have a punt on the LG 42LF652V from either Richer Sounds or John Lewis if I can get them to price match down to £380. Failing that, it might well be worth having another crack at a new Sony. The issue I've got is that I'd ideally like a 42" or 43" screen, but loads of the manufacturers, including Samsung, are going 40" and 48", which is annoyingly a teeny bit too small or a bit too big for my living room, so I'm really only being catered for by LG and Sony as far as I can tell (unless anyone would like to suggest otherwise?).

As an aside, the TV I'm replacing, a 32" Panasonic, has a gorgeous IPS screen on it that I've loved for 8 years, so I'm curious to see what the LG's IPS is like.

They put the fault down to software problems, but I took pictures of test images from laptop displayed on the tv which proved there was a problem with the panel. I downloaded latest firmware, no difference; I also reset the tv and manually installed new firmware, again no difference. In normal video images, the problem is not very noticeable, but the problem is still there.

Received mine (KD55X8509C) on Wednesday. Came well packaged and apart form a scratch on the screen that's barely visible and even less so when the set is turned on, it's cosmetically perfect.

On first run updated the software which took about 40 minutes and found myself pleasantly surprised how fast and smooth Android was on Sony. I should mention that I didn't enable YouView, having Sky already.

Being edge lit and 55", there's light bleeding and there's no getting away with it. I'm sure had I invested more (say a Samsung JS series TV or OLED) it wouldn't be so, but for £649, I'm happy.

I always thought that Sony does the best HD upscale and I'm happy to report that HD channels like BBC1 HD look amazing upscaled on the set.

Netflix 4K looks amazing. Haven't tried Amazon Prime Video yet.

I haven't played much with the picture settings, mostly sticking to Home Cinema mode for now.

All in all pleased with the purchase. Only concern, the one year warranty. Only time will tell.

You dont pay anything. However, be prepared for the courier to turn up completely unannounced.
The shonkiest returns procedure ive known. Got my money back in the end though.
Sat waiting for Richer to drop the non 3d model from £529, and i'm having one again.
A TV like this DEFINITELY needs an extended warranty.
Anyone having doubts about Android on these tvs, don't.
I updated the one i had, and Android was a pleasure to use. Way better than using a pc/mouse.
I loaded the Wookie on top of Kodi, and watched The Big Short (2 hrs 10 mns) with NO break ups.

Guys I need urgent help - I've decided not to keep my TV but I will keep the soundbar. Just rang the wolverhampton sony centre who handled my order and the guy said they don't handle returns and I have no right to return as I entered into a contract and can't return a tv.

I've just checked on centresdirect and it specifically states "We offer a 14 day returns guarantee, which means that if for any reason you are not entirely satisfied with your purchase you can return it to us in its original condition within 14 days of the date you received the goods, and we will issue a full refund of the original purchase price paid"

I'm going to call them back soon and quote the website blurb but the guy sounded like a complete tool and was unwilling to help at all.

If you paid via credit card, call the card issuer and tell them, that the retailer is in breach of their own T&C but make sure to have any written evidence from them stating that you're not entitled to a refund, whilst the website says otherwise.
tom6195
4 Apr 16 #164
I don't have any written evidence from the wolves store that they are unwilling to process my return, just the guy I spoke to an hour ago. Tomorrow is the 14th day after receiving the items, and I first emailed the store on 01/04/2016, and now today 04/04/2016 outlining why I wish to return the items and even stating excerpts from their own returns policy as stated on their website.

Do you think I should contact my CC company while I wait for a reply from the store?

tom6195
4 Apr 16 #168
Here is the e-mail I've sent the Wolves store (I also BCC'd a couple of Sony PR contacts just for giggles)

To the manager,

This is my second e-mail to you, with the first dated 01/04/2016.

I have also tried contacting you by telephone today at approximately 14:00 only to be told that I cannot return any items purchased via the centres direct website which is 100% incorrect.

As mentioned in my previous e-mail, I recently purchased these two items from the sony centres direct website and according to my email and paper confirmation it was your Wolverhampton store who handled the order.

I unpacked the television and sound bar this past weekend and I've been testing them out but unfortunately I have not got on with the items very well as the TV has quite severe backlight bleed and a number of dead pixels; and the soundbar isn't compatible with the Amazon Prime/Youtube/Netflix apps on the TV and does not output any audio when the soundbar is on which renders the soundbar almost usless since I use these apps quite frequently.

Please consider this notifcation of my cancellation under the terms of the Distance Selling Regulations act which has now been superseded by the Consumer Contracts Regulations (2013), and under the terms of your returns policy as stated here https://centresdirect.co.uk/t-returns.aspx and here https://centresdirect.co.uk/t-termsandconditions-sale.aspx

"We offer a 14 day returns guarantee, which means that if for any reason you are not entirely satisfied with your purchase you can return it to us in its original condition within 14 days of the date you received the goods, and we will issue a full refund of the original purchase price paid"

And:

"Provided you are a private customer, who orders goods for a purpose that can neither be attributed to your commercial activity nor to any independent professional activity, you have the right to cancel the contract at any time up to 14 days after you receive the goods"

And:

"The cancellation period shall begin, at the earliest, upon the receipt of the above mentioned information, but not before the goods has been delivered to the customer."

And finally:

"To exercise your right of cancellation, you must give notice to The Sony Centre in text form by hand, post or e-mail, giving details of the goods ordered and (where appropriate) their delivery"

I took delivery of the items on Tuesday 22nd March 2016 and today is Monday 4th April 2016.

Please advise on how best to proceed next.

The reply just now:-

Good afternoon,

We are in the process of arranging collection of your items with Sony and will confirm when we know. They will send a courier out to collect the items this may take a few days.

We will be unable to refund the order until Sony have confirmed receipt of them back at the warehouse.

Regards,

Wolverhampton Sony Centre

I contacted them firstly by phone, then i sent an email with the defect's photo (2 big lines of bright pixels on the upper right corner) then it all started (for me it is the newcastle store).

They told me that they did not know how Sony would handle it, i wrote them everyday so and they initially told me that i would have received a replacement (but they did not know when).

Then a day they called me saying that i had been delivered a new tv which it was not true as i was at work, then they apologized saying that the courier told them so and to contact the courier about it.

I contacted UK Mail as i was also receiving texts from them about "your sony order collection will happen today from xx to xx" but they had no collection or delivery planned for me.

I contacted the store again, they apologized again and confirmed that they have no more the tv model i ordered and that it will be a refund (fine, honestly i do not trust sony anymore, yes i know that it is not "direct Sony" yet you still expect a different kind of treatment from Sony licensed stores) and we arranged that the collection for today (even if they never confirmed me the date for sure).

This morning i received a new text from UK Mail saying the collection will happen from 5pm to 6pm, so it's about time, lets hope they will really come.

(i hope i explained it in a way that makes sense, english is not my primary language as you can see  )

Best thing to do is, contact your CC first and eplain the situation. They will advise you what to do.

I contacted them after 3 weeks of complaints and why its taking long for them to arrange a collection of the damaged tv.

Contacted my CC company and the refunded me within 2 days. Its a just a matter of ask outlets coming to collect now. CC said they have 45 days to dispute the refund.

I got the reply from the store saying they are in contact with sony and arranging the collection of my items. I'll give them a few days to sort it out and if I hear nothing by Friday I'll be on the phone to barclaycard.

Such a hassle but I should've known better buying a refurb from a company that actually has nothing to do with sony and is simply licensing the name.
