How many years or generations old is the device is quite irrelevant. For this price you can't get much better technology. It's also one of the best phones yet when it comes to battery life. And is due to get Marshmallow shortly. So definitely heat from me!

bought one to replace a broken S5 and there's nothing refurbished about this one, chips, dents and plenty of scratches, been well used without a case and dropped I'd say- grade C at best-looks like a well used trade in and I'd steer clear of the Argos refurb!

I carry devices when I need it. That's pretty much the point isn't it? Both are far better when I go to events during the year.

I've rarely use more than 10gb on the phone and I prefer streaming as I have decent WiFi and SD cards full of music on other devices, so I'm fine.

Eh, pretty much most smartphone devices are the same? Hardly a solid argument.

I read it in sunlight fine and I haven't really thought about bright colours reproduction on a smaller screen tbh.

I'm afraid I'm in no need to control these. Might have been a nice perk in the past but Chromecast for TV/Audio for music covers it all and Bluetooth is everywhere. Plus streaming is king. It's 2016 now buddy.

I don't have need to connect to my PC. My phone does well without it with the best Android updates on a clean OS without touchwiz. Before you counter that, no I'm not interested in rooting the phone to rid it of touchwiz if I don't like it. It doesn't interest me anymore since my HTC Hero days.

Chipset is pretty good still tbh. Touchwiz and Samsung's power hungry apps you can't uninstall will hamfist it anyway.

And? Most phones that have it can't do much anyway, quite gimmicky tbh. I've never thought about dunking my phone underwater for 30 mins to suffer needless water damage either. :P Plus it's not going to benefit me much more than been a nice geeky feature I can thrust in the face of someone without really using it in real life situations much.

I'm not going force feed people whether they need to save £20 or not. Just offering an alternative that's all.

27 Mar 16 #69
No, they are pretty thin answers really
You'd rather carry surplus devices on the off chance?
With 32GB you've got no choice for it to be anything other than enough.
Just one day from a charge - nevermind.
LCD may be 'fine' but is inferior,
how do you get on controlling non LAN connected devices with wifi - stuff like every telly, hifi, dvd player etc in the house?
USB3 isnt about charging speeds
The chipset may be adequate, but again is inferior
Still got no ip67 certification.

The saving of 20 quid still seems like false economy compared to what you could have had :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a 1080p camcorder and megapixel superzoom, I don't need a jack of all trades poor man's solution on a phone. I'm not bothered about taking pictures or video of everything I see around me unless it's something important.

32gb is enough for my general use.

Battery hasn't bothered me much, lasts all day in my use.

AMOLED isn't really something I needed. I find the LCD screen is fine.

IR blaster? I have no need for it. WiFi rules all. Especially since it has ac too.

I got a wireless charger on top and have quickcharging facility so usb3 isn't really an issue for me.

It's processor is quick in general use. Had a Moto G 1 and 2 before so it's like night and day difference tbh.

Have I answered all your objections to your satisfaction?

You also got only an 8mp camera, no 4k recording, no ip67 certification, no expandable memory, a smaller non replaceable battery, no Super AMOLED screen, no IR blaster, no USB 3 connectivity and an SD800 not 801 chipset - expensive way of saving 20 quid...

The G900M has now received its roll out as well

Only the SM-G900L model that's sold in their home market of South Korea.

Samsung have form for abandoning international models, usually around the time they release a new device.

Marshmallow S5 update is rolling out in some countries today actually.
Masteryates
22 Mar 16 #51
It may not be as smooth as a £600 iphone or android phone. But considering the cost, its not 3 or 4 times slower either. If I was paying £600 for an iphone, I'd want a screen that is better than my G2 not worse. I'd want a battery that last 200 hours, considering my G2 lasts 50 hours with 3 hours of screen on time.

Phones like the G2 and S5 may not be up to date or the fastest. However, if you don't want to pay £600 you will get an experience that is slightly less for a fraction of the money.

This is a great phone and personally haven't seen any problems with Bluetooth, camera is fantastic

When is Marshmallow coming on S5?
crackshotkv to octopus
22 Mar 16 1 #50
It's unlikely the s5 will ever get marshmallow, even if samsung stated it on the road map. They've yet to even upgrade it from 5.0.1 to 5.1, couple with it's relatively low sales and the release of the S7, they have now real motivation to upgrade it, which is sad given it's a pretty solid phone (minus the touch wiz and the tiny 16GB storage).

Has anyone done this and if so thoughts on if the camera pics are still as good as with the original samsung software?
Lanius to tight_guju
22 Mar 16 #48
As far as i know CM is missing certain things such as the fingerprint scanner. As for the camera, you should never use the Samsung camera anyway because that's what adds the massive over-sharpening to all the images and video. Image quality i much better if you use any third party camera app.

Find another phone that has the same spec, a REMOVABLE battery, WATERPROOF and MEMORY CARD SLOT!!

I've got the s7 edge but i still miss my old s5. It was the best phone they ever did. I used to carry 2 spare batteries in my wallet for days that i really hammered the battery and very rarely had to swap out the battery. Also used the phone in the sea abroad many times to take pics and videos of fish etc. All the time, having loads of memory due to the micro SD card slot! there is yet a phone to be released that's anywhere near as good as the s5. I don't know why people don't appreciate it more! :sunglasses:

22 Mar 16 #34
Except they take forever to arrive. (Marshmallow only just starting to roll out to S5 now)

And they're not problem free. The Samsung implementation of Bluetooth in Lollipop is a bug ridden mess. My O/H got an Argos refurb S5 a few months back. It was pristine condition wise. But has all the same Bluetooth problems my Note 3 with Lollipop had.

The camera is OK. Nowhere near as good as the camera on my Nexus 6p, but that's a much newer device.

Battery life is also still fine on hers. But it's replaceable. So if you end up with a worn one, at least you can easily stick a new one in. Once Marshmallow gets to all S5's, the updates in there should do wonders for the battery life of it as well.

As for it not being the latest cutting edge, for most people, that doesn't matter. It still has plenty power. More than enough for 95% of average users. And expandable storage.

Good deal. Heat.

21 Mar 16 #12
Good specs but I've had friends that weren't overly impressed with the camera and the battery life is pretty poor. Personally I'd spend another £20 and look at a brand new phone around the £200 mark, rather than risk a refurb. The only time I bought a refurbed phone was when I needed a cheap one in the states and got a Moto E that had the worst battery life I've ever encountered!
Jefft to woldranger
22 Mar 16 1 #33
Your friends were not impressed by the camera? This is one of the best cameras on any smart phone. Perhaps they have not set it up correctly. I have one and the picture quality and resolution is fantastic as is the 4K video recording.

Seems not a bad deal. Just for clarity on previous comments this is two generations old to the just released new model s7 and not three. I believe it just received marshmallow too.
Wonder if anyone can inform on how this compares to the s5 plus which I have seen for not too much more on cex ? Any advice appreciated.
fairytooth to arvy1
21 Mar 16 #15
The S5+ was a modest processor upgrade. This is an amazing phone when it came out 2 years ago. The S6 was a backward step in some respects (removable storage, etc.) so this is a good deal for the money. Still not many other phones with an AMOLED 1080p screen at this price point.
Quicklite to arvy1
22 Mar 16 #29
Currently using the S5 plus, and had the Note 4 in the past. If this deal was for a S5 plus - it might be worth it, but as it stands I've slight reservation - plenty of deals about. Both S5 & S5 plus (UK) are limited 2GB ram - lags a bit if you've loads of apps installed; had to uninstall Facebook app & turn off Push notification to make the battery manageable. S5 has that flappy port cover, to this day I'm not sure if mine is waterproof anymore - not keen to test it out. S6 is a downgrade - S7 edge seems nice - but not worth spending 2x -3x as much imo.

If you compare the specs to the budget phones at a similar price, it's not a bad deal. The Moto G 3rd Gen 16GB is a bit cheaper but so is the screen and CPU. You could pay a touch more for the Moto X Play or G Flex 2 as they are 2015 phones. If the price was £150, it would be hot. At this price, luke warm for me.
