The jury is still out for me on whether Sonicare or the Braun brushes are better. I have both fairly high end versions (paid very little for them thanks to HUKD).
I used to think that the Sonicare cleaned better, but someone mentioned a while back that the braun pulsating heads do a better job.
The Sonicare deffinitely has a superior battery. The Braun 5000 battery needs charging very often.

I'm a Sonicare fan  If you look at the animated-teeth website (search "animated-teeth electric brushes") you'll find lots of great information about Sonicare and Oral-B. Might help if you're on the fence.
Philips have brought out a new range now so this is why the older EasyClean, HealthyWhite models are on clearance.
You still end up at the dentist every 6 month as nothing compares to a proper clean. The 20 quid brauns do a decent job spending more wont save you the trip, save the dollar and get better toothpaste as they are the biggest cleaners

You can use DiamondClean, ProResults, ProResults Mini, Sensitive etc heads with the newer Sonicares, they're all interchangeable.
The older Sonicare e-series head looked like this but the brush handles are discontinued - these are not compatible.
You can easily get generics from ebay (don't buy from Groupon or the like as they're overpriced). No experience of the cheapie copies so can't comment on the quality. Lots of reviews on Amazon though. Well, I can only speak for myself but my dentist has confirmed my teeth and gum health has vastly improved since I moved to sonic toothbrushes (moving on from Ultrasonex about ten years ago). I've only ever had old fillings re-done, nothing else.

Quoted some gubbins a few weeks ago about the different Sonicare heads, how to choose the right Sonicare for you, why the 31,000 brushstrokes for minute mode is important, here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/philips-sonicare-hx6511-sonic-toothbrush-22-50-tesco-john-lewis-2400645?p=27433029
