I bought that Maplins one and not impressed. It's so slow!

Bought the previous lidl drill on offer a month or 2 back - that one was a hammer drill and it's so much better than the maplin one. This one isn't hammer but still much better specs.

I sense some hidden inflation. They used to sell 18V batteries for the same price. May not seem like a big deal but you can no longer add tools to your "Parkside" collection as the batteries will not be interchangeable.

If the voltage doesn't make a difference then why don't they just wire up the cells in parallel?

parkside tools are quite solid and tough for a good level of work
the maplins drill is of very poor standard
i have both a 10v and 20v parkside drills very pleased

I have the 12v parkside drill (from last year) and its a solid drill even in my 1930's semi with very solid walls!
never had a issue with it. good price for a decent built drill

Probably as much to do with marketing as anything else, I've had 24V drills that couldn't perform as well as 12V.

In terms of the Physics if you lower the volts you need to increase the current to achieve the same power, this increases the heat in the wires and therefore motor. For a drill this is quite significant, you don't want it burning out, so the manufacturer keeps the V relatively high, 2V isn't going to make a great deal of difference.

Lithium and NiMH cells both can pretty much deliver near infinite current, but obviously in a nearly infinitely short space of time, hence why short circuiting them is a very bad idea - that's why they catch fire when shorted, so the batteries themselves are capable of delivering any current requested, so it becomes a balancing act of power, battery life and making the consumer think they're getting something special.

A quality drill has a gearbox with metal cogs. A cheap one uses plastic/ nylon cogs. If it's not mentioned in the Ad it's usually the cheap version. Good for occasional use. Just put the receipt in a safe place. Lidl are good with guarantees. Money back no messing. With the receipt.

£5 more but 20% more torque and 2x 1.5Ah batts so better VFM really.

Seems like good value to me - with added bonus of fast charger, charge level indicator and work light.

If I did not already own their 10.8v combi and 18v impact I'd buy this without hesitation.

Can anyone comment on the Guild driver? 2 batteries is always good if the drill is any good.

I bought this on a whim when it was £40 effectively as a powered screwdriver if it turned out to be a rubbish drill but I have to say it's a pretty good hammer drill for light diy use, so I was pleasantly surprised! Good heavy feel to it and no problem drilling into walls or driving screws - well worth £40 in my opinion but even more so at £30!

Past HUD comments mention a poor battery life long term but from what I've read the power pack can be opened and alternative (higher quality LG) batteries installed instead, so good all round.

I have to disagree, it's not the best by a long shot don't get me wrong but not everybody wants or has the means to spend £100+ on a makita drill they may use half a dozen times a year. Don't forget it has a 3 year warranty so if anything goes wrong you'll have no problems in getting your money back for a replacement.

Each to their own but just because it's not the quality you'd buy yourself doesn't mean it's not a deal!

If you can find me a decent drill for £50 then go ahead, but no point comparing a £100+ item with one for £30!

Most Parkside tools are rebranded Einhell tools which are pretty good and spares are easy to find. On the other hand I can't see any 16 volt items in Einhell's current range.

Is it possible to buy additional battery packs?
Cordless is great but even an hour recharge would be a pain if it prevented completion of a job.

Why can't folks like you realise that for the average DIYer who will dust off the drill once a month or so, this drill, and many others in the price range are more than capable for there needs?

Weekly use then users should really look at better quality.

Daily use then your into the top end brushless motors.

Joe is hassled from his wife to get that TV on the wall but he doesn't have a drill, he browses in his local DIY store and sees drills ranging from £20 to £300, what one does he buy as he's got ONE job to do?
He opts for a cheaper one, does the job then it gathers dust for weeks/months until the next job, he pulls it out and it either works = job done, or it doesn't = take it back and exchange it.

There IS a market for these low end drills.

For anything more than light DIY I'd go for a cordless hammer drill with around 50Nm torque. The recent £70 fatmax deal would fall into this category:

That said if on a tiny budget, any drill is better than no drill I s'pose.

Bear in mind the Parkside has a 3 year guarantee, the Guild one has 2 years but is that with Homebase or Guild, who appear to be pretty new.

I got the 18v one a few weeks ago to replace my 3-4 year old makita. That cost £100, but the older type batteries failed(despite my best efforts to flatten them before charging).

The parkside feels every bit as good and Li-on batteries are much more convenient.
Instead of buying a spare battery for £20 odd, I just bought the cordless saw for £40.

I got one today at around 9.30pm, they said they just put them out and they reckon they will sell quickly on Thursday morning.

I had a Parkside drill I bought last year, it's playing up now but I lost the lidl receipt. Anyone know if I can print out a bank statement and use it for a proof of purchase to get it fixed it refunded.

No hammer function. Just has 2 speeds and variable torque.

Feels nice and sturdy.

Think you visited the store too early. They put the stock out sometimes night before, this deal started yesterday (Thurs). Loads of them in our local store yesterday.

As for the Makeeeta comments;

I have a new 18v Makeeeeeta, it's a good combi drill - it's also a premium product favoured by people who use them for work (and produce a range of drills from entry level up to very expensive). I also have a couple of Workzone (Aldi) and Parkside drills (10.8v and 18v) The Parkside has a decent weight, more than adequate power and has fast charge, battery indicator and work light - it's sturdy and has done everything I have asked inc driving 80mm screws, 80mm coach screws, bolts etc. In fact I often opt to use it over the Makeeeeeeta.

My only reservation is that I have heard of battery issues with some of the 18v Parkside, but it has the warranty and I kept the receipt.

!! Did not realise this has no hammer function !! If you have solid walls - maybe wait until they have the 18v on for £10 more!

If you are a diy'er doing bits n bobs about the house and garden: £30 for this has to be a no brainer.
