Good price for that TV, was looking at it before I went for the 680B, at the time it was £499. I don't think I'd have gone 4k that day if this was only £350.

Not sure this site is trustworthy based on quick search on Trustpilot, may be worth investigating prior to purchasing.
Bought a 40 inch one for my parents. Bit short on connectivity but it's hardly the end of the world these days with hdmi switchers around if you need it. The menus are also rather sluggish. What matters is that the panel itself is really impressive for this price.

I'm not sure the size of a company has anything to do with it's quality in terms of customer service etc. I would be interested to hear about peoples positive/negative experiences on here prior to purchase as looking at Trustpilot has made me reluctant to purchase this..

I just bought this deal, thanks OP, paid £351 looks like a pretty decent TV for the price. only thing I'm worried about is the lip-sync issue that springs up on the older reviews, but I'm guessing a firmware update has fixed that since cant see it being mentioned on the newer ones
Just ordered, couldn't resist £351 for 50" HD with freeview play, free 5yr gtee, and excellent reviews. The last flat screen TV I bought was a 40" Sony 720p for £1400 (back in 2007) so this TV certainly looks like a bargain to me...!!

No, it's called market demand. However I call OLED progress. No plasma can touch them.
http://www.whathifi.com/panasonic/tx-50cs520/review this was one of the reviews of this set that impresses me. I think that something like the Samsung UE48H6400 was worth the little extra money, but there is no doubt this is a quality panel for rather little money.

Does it have normal Freeview? The reviews are conflicting
Freeview HD according to Richer Sounds and according to Panasonic's own website it has the DVB-T/T2 which is HD.
It has freetime which is useful but only 2 hdmi's but look at the cheap pprice. Who cares about 4k. It's just a ploy for you to spend more money on tv's and sky. Its not going to available on freeview as they currently don't have enough bandwidth to show any more than 11 HD channels, not to mention 4k. Sky will use it as another excuse to exploit even more money off you to give to people who will earn more in a week than you or I do in a year so will give this a little heat.
The last ones are really key and the others merely debatable. This is because plasma was a high end purchase, and almost exclusively occupied the higher end of the market. Which was fine while even high end LCDs were pretty pish in comparison. Now they really aren't and you have to also realise OLED will simply slide right in there at said higher end and pound plasma technology anyway. Plasma was between a rock and a hard place.
It's a sad demise but pretty understandable. Give it another 2 years and it'll be a quirky footnote, if it isn't already.

Any experts in panels, specs say 100 Hz but have read that it is really 50 Hz in disguise, anybody know the truth and does it matter anyway?
damadgeruk
12 Mar 16#78
Pretty sure you didn't. You are correct regarding the main reasons for the death of plasma (shipping cost and low margins) though neither of which relate to market demand. Ultimately irrelevant, the king is dead, OLED may take the crown (if the market is willing to stump up their cash /credit).

Thank you for your price match request for the Panasonic Viera 50CS520B 50'' Tv (product code 82451152).
In order to apply a price reduction on a purchase, the criteria in our pricing policy must be met. I regret that after review the request you have submitted does not match all or parts of this policy.
In order to match a price request, the competitor must trade on the same basis as us, for example we will not match online only retailers, mail order only or showrooms attached to internet only orders.

Pretty sure I did, otherwise you wouldn't have quoted my 'market demand' allusion to progress (i.e the demise of plasma) verbatim. Low margins can relate directly to market demand, especially when it concerns investment of manufacturers in capacity/development.
Either way Plasma is history. Current LCD technology might not have overtaken it even now. But development means it isn't the million miles away it was 10 years ago, while at least one newer technology or another mostly supersedes it already.
Precisely why a budget set such as this makes an awful lot of sense in 2016 as a stopgap. On the cusp of 4K, but not really there yet for Ultra HD premium certified models. Close to but not quite verging on mainstream affordable OLED sets. LG has just ploughed a fortune into a new massive OLED factory to be set up, it gets closer by the day.

I'm not keen on the delivery terms:
"• Risk
On receipt of the goods to your specified address, you will be responsible for them. We will only deliver goods to the address on the order. It is your responsibility to unpack and check your goods before you sign for them. If you discover any transit damage, shortages or incorrect goods please reject the delivery with the carrier and notify us within 24 hours of delivery. Ownership of goods will be transferred to yourself at the point of signature therefore any loss or damage shall be at your own risk from the time of receipted delivery."

Hadn't arrived by 19:00.
Rang Knowhow at 19:01 to ask what time their delivery drivers work until. After searching Knowhow system the helpdesk person transferred me to their delivery office...
Then was told my purchase was NOT out for delivery today, they have in fact lost my TV and will need to raise a case number which I was then given. Knowhow will now have to search their warehouse and contact SSE to check their delivery details and/or to arrange for a replacement to be sent.
I think I can kiss this purchase goodbye.

Feeling sorry for myself after missing out on the Passat AllTrack!
This is also a great deal - normal price recently seems to be around £499.
Heat added, great spot Op.

1 USB and 2 HDMI put me off this but it looks like a great deal
Not sure if I want a switcher, they all look a bit cheap and problematic, plus last thing I want is another plug socket to power the switch
Get the Duronic one though, the cheaper model I had problems with.

That would be a massive deal breaker
http://www.whathifi.com/panasonic/tx-50cs520/review this was one of the reviews of this set that impresses me. I think that something like the Samsung UE48H6400 was worth the little extra money, but there is no doubt this is a quality panel for rather little money.

...although note that's from June last year so may be out of date now. Definitely got iPlayer and Netflix, though, so that's me covered.
They rejected my request for a different TV today because the price match retailer charges a restock fee if you miss delivery, but JL do not, so they rejected under different terms from other seller!
Then a better one for my needs came up on hduk so I'm not bothered.

Other reasons:
Customer perception
Altitude problems
Imperfect colours, image retention, brightness
Heavier sets, heavier shipping
Lower profit margins
The last ones are really key and the others merely debatable. This is because plasma was a high end purchase, and almost exclusively occupied the higher end of the market. Which was fine while even high end LCDs were pretty pish in comparison. Now they really aren't and you have to also realise OLED will simply slide right in there at said higher end and pound plasma technology anyway. Plasma was between a rock and a hard place.
It's a sad demise but pretty understandable. Give it another 2 years and it'll be a quirky footnote, if it isn't already.
Unfortunately, as SSE are an online only retailer we are unable to price match them as a comparable competitor. Therefore, on this occasion I regret that I cannot match the price offered by SSE

One second before!
Like others no details of shipping or tracking.
Thanks to the OP for excellent spot. Like some others I had thought it was a misprice that would be cancelled as it was the same price on the SSE website as the smaller 40" version.
Oddly 'Knowhow' have to wait for the stock to be delivered to them from SSE - why don't SSE send them direct?
I'm not keen on the delivery terms:
"• Risk
On receipt of the goods to your specified address, you will be responsible for them. We will only deliver goods to the address on the order. It is your responsibility to unpack and check your goods before you sign for them. If you discover any transit damage, shortages or incorrect goods please reject the delivery with the carrier and notify us within 24 hours of delivery. Ownership of goods will be transferred to yourself at the point of signature therefore any loss or damage shall be at your own risk from the time of receipted delivery."
I can't imagine the delivery driver is going to want to wait while I unpack the TV and set it up to make sure it is working properly.
Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your email.
We ask our carrier to wait and check each appliance, please ask and if they will not stay for you to check the item sign with a note saying NOT CHECKED and let us know this was the case.
Kind regards
SSE
Blimey that was quick, received email with attached warranty 30 mins after submitting it...
For a faulty TV obviously you would just return it as such, but what if the screen is cracked when you unbox for example?
Hadn't arrived by 19:00.
Rang Knowhow at 19:01 to ask what time their delivery drivers work until. After searching Knowhow system the helpdesk person transferred me to their delivery office...
Then was told my purchase was NOT out for delivery today, they have in fact lost my TV and will need to raise a case number which I was then given. Knowhow will now have to search their warehouse and contact SSE to check their delivery details and/or to arrange for a replacement to be sent.
I think I can kiss this purchase goodbye.
Poor show not-know-how!!
Needless to say, I took an afternoon off work to wait in for this - needlessly, as it transpires.
not-Knowhow have seriously slipped up on this occasion, not only have they lost an item they had in their possession when they sent my confirmation text (the evening before) they failed to mention they had lost it to their waiting customer...
All seems ok but just a bit odd getting used to the picture after having a Plasma for so many years...
I panicked a bit after the setup as the picture was awful until I realised the HD channels were 101, 102 etc
Going to watch it for a week or so and then calibrate it.
