Had mine for at least a week and been really pleased with it, although the earpiece has started crackling when speaking on calls. Need to do a few more tests ensuring full reception to see whether it's a dud - but performance wise - this is ace!

Yes, that is a good price for the Moto G. But compared to the competition, it is still expensive.
And don't cite the "quick updates" as an advantage. Motorola has not been "quick" for quite a while. It should be running Android 6 by now, but it isn't.
stonebear to MrPuddington

Yea, I think it is still a bit expensive too. And the "quick updates" thing was just when they were owned by Google for a while? Now they are owned by Lenovo there is no reason why it would get quick updates, sadly.

The reports are mixed, but if it is true, that is indeed not bad. Certainly better than the 5.0 upgrade, which took ages.

my 2nd gen 4g is running superb on marshmallow. received the update early this week. I'm tempted by this deal as I think the 16gb version is better due to double the amount of ram. mine lags very slightly with alot of stuff going on

I'm still assessing all the budget offerings at the moment; deciding between this, the 8GB one and the (8GB) Sony Xperia M4 Aqua.
I'm a little concerned that 8GB is getting a bit short, however, I'm not a huge user of apps and don't watch films / play games (in summary, I'm old  ). The waterproofness attracts, as does using it as a camera along with email / news / sport / fb / maps.
I'm also a little concerned about the screens on the MOTO's - heard they crack fairly easily? Mine will sit in my pocket when commuting on a bike everyday so has to have a certain degree of ruggedness.
With that in mind and being a massive delboy, I'm swinging towards the Aqua at the mo.
Anyone think I'm being an idiot?

I only managed to crack the screen on my Moto G 4G (1st gen) by dropping it face down onto a pavement from 5 feet. Fortunately only the bottom cracked i.e. below the soft buttons, so the display was unaffected.
Not sure the 8GB storage is an issue with the mkIII, as it has an SD slot, but the 1GB RAM is starting to become a problem with Android handsets in my experience.
If you want a cheap, but high spec device - check out the Chinese Doogee Valencia 2 Pro Y100 (I keep banging on about this handset, but it works well!).

Conversely mines been dropped, sat on and it's fair share of accidental bashes over the year or two I've had it. Though I think it's durability has a lot to do with the gel cover which, face down, keeps the screen away from a surface.

The 8GB Moto G 2nd generation that we have has sd card slot. It's on marshmallow now which allows the sd card to part of the memory. Great. Problem is it's really doesn't like class 10 cards as it will report its not there and then reboot and it might reappear. Been on the Moto site and quite a few reporting it. Other users suggest using class 6 but then android 6 will say it's too slow for use as inclusive memory so only good for use as removable memory so no apps as android 6 doesn't give you the option anymore to host them on a removable card. So then the 4.85 GB free (OS uses 3.15GB) out of 8Gb is soon chewed up, even just with keeping all the Google and Moto apps up to date let alone Facebook, plex and whatsapp and Amazon apps. Not that many apps but when they all use 200-300MB, it's not enough to space.
Tried Lexmark, Kingston, Samsung class 10. Even Tried Sandisk ultra 16Gb (the one shown on the us Moto site) and that was temperamental too.
I hope the 3rd gen is better but I would go for the16GB built in next time.

I really want to upgrade from my Moto G 2nd-gen 3G 1GB/8GB dual-sim as I do find the RAM fills up and it soon becomes slow/unresponsive with more than a few apps running (Apex Launcher, Zoiper, Call Recorder, AFWall+, Aquamail, Tapatalk). I don't even run an antivirus anymore as it couldn't cope and it's a pain having to link apps/data to the SD card, which is not encrypted. I'd give it to my Dad as he could really use a dual-sim phone and it would be fine for his limited needs (and certainly an upgrade from my crappy old Huawei Ascend G300 that he's currently using!) I understand that the 2G networks will be switched off soon, which limits the usefulness of the 2nd-gen as only one of the SIMs can work in 3G but it will still be handy for my Dad when he travels abroad, as he can just switch the active SIM rather than having to open it up to change SIM when he arrives and risk losing the other one and even at home, he can just tell my Mum he's going to be on SIM 2 on the days he needs to be on that.
I couldn't bear to give up dual-sim now though, as it comes in really handy sometimes and there doesn't seem to be a UK Moto G 3rd-gen 2GB/16GB dual-sim available and even if there were, because of the 2G switch-off it would need to support 3G on both to be of use to me. I've looked at some other brands but they seem to make you choose whether to use the slot for a second-sim or an SD card, which is pathetic and I like having a phone that gets reasonably fast upgrades and is well catered for in terms of ROMs and mods, so I'll have to keep waiting and hoping.
