Queensland is still pretty warm this time of year, Brisbane itself doesn't really offer a great deal but you could fly up to Cairns and then from there it's possible to get free camper vans that they want taking back down to Brisbane. Internal flights in Australia are dirt cheap if you use Tigerair so you can even get a trip in to Sydney or Melbourne.
intranix to The_Pope

Melbourne maybe. Brisbane will be nice and warm in the day and "cool" in the evening with little humidity, which I think most would prefer

Hey, try to get the bulkhead seat, more legroom, but don't worry about the 22/23 hour flight going there, worry about the 35 return flight!!
paulo the limey to CharleyNokia

To those concerned about legroom in economy, it's worthwhile checking out sites like http://www.seatguru.com to check legroom stats. I flew LHR to SYD earlier this year with Etihad, who were alright. I'm a lanky 6'4" and was lucky to get bulkhead seats on 3 of the 4 flights- I'd have been pretty uncomfortable otherwise.

Yes I got caught out with this last year when I unexpectedly went to Oz when staying in NZ. Virgin Australia charged me $50 to do a visa at the airport (free if you do it yourself) and watch out for channel 7 doing the Border Control programme.

We've flown economy as a family four times - the first was with an 18 month and 4 year old, I wouldn't recommend that. But the other flights were fine - as soon as the kids were old enough to be engrossed by the TV screens we just let them vegetate for 24 hours. We've flown Singapore, Emirates, BA and Etihad and honestly there's not much to choose between them IMO. Most recent was Etihad (last month), the entertainment system on the A380 was superb by economy class standards (and not much worse on the other legs). It's slightly better to break the flight in Dubai / Abu Dhabi than Singapore because it makes for two more equal halves of the journey, changing at Singapore on the way back and realising you've still got 3/4 of the flight time to go was a bit depressing.

Don't forget to get an e-Visa (free, apply online) before you leave, the airline doesn't usually remind you.

I'm packing a bike...so multiple carriers/airports is out. China Southern don't charge extra for carrying bikes - so I guess £375 with no excess charges is worth the money. Flight duration isn't too bad either.

I just wish the international airfare pricing matched the European system - where one way flights are the same price as the outbound flights on a return airfare.

I think, London - Perth June 27 - May 6 is half term.

London to Perth is cheap through April and May. But other outbound and inbound points aren't hugely more expensive.

Skyscanner? There are flights as low as £375 on there if you're flexible on where you want to land and when you want to go

If the plan is long term travel or backpacking then sometimes it's worth checking out prices from Dublin, Paris or Amsterdam as well and including a trip to those locations as part of your journey.

Back in 2014 I went to Sydney via Amsterdam and Taipei which as well as making the journey cheaper than a single stop in say Abu Dhabi gave me a few days of travel in places I hadn't yet been.

Good price, but it is low season and generally flight prices a few hundred pounds cheaper during this period.

As a bit of a deal hound, I really dislike paying almost the same amount for a one way flight as for a return. Am I missing a trick - or is there a way to get cheap one way flights to Aus?

I agree with many of the above posters....if you are getting a hot deal like this, possibly saving £3-500 per person, then I'm sure you would accept a little less comfort, if it was an issue for you.
If I was booking, the saving would allow me to either buy direct from an airline or from a more reputable reseller (please read reviews before you book from one).

I imagine this is going to be down to the individual being a glass half full or empty kinda person. We did the journey with 2 kids and were fine.I mean you're flying to Australia so that keeps you going! Regular food and drink, with no washing/tidying up, watched a load of movies and got a bit of sleep here and there. What's not to like?

We flew Singapore Airlines on the hottest deal i have ever had from this site back in 2010....£440 a ticket!! That would have kept me smiling to the moon!!! Happy days

Momodo is an online search engine and is reliable.

With this in mind, it's important to note the tickets are booked via the airline or an online travel agent, so use one you feel comfortable with or book direct with the airline and claim cashback.

30 Mar 16 #21
It's really not that bad. I flew economy Manchester -> Perth and back 4 times in an 18 month period. Every time was with Qatar with a 90 min stopover in Doha... even a short break like that is enough to break the monotony. I'm 6ft and on the chubby side but just made sure I stretched my legs every hour or so. But as kiwigirl says above, hope you don't get an inconsiderate sod in front or behind.

Actually I've just remembered I paid for extra leg space on one of my trips (first leg Perth -> Doha only). Not sure it was worth the extra $137 AUD, especially when some guy with a broken seat screen got moved next to me free of charge about 10 mins into the flight :-)

So yeah, don't worry about it. Stock up on music, books or video and it passes quicker than you'd think.

Ive done the flight to OZ / NZ five times, all economy, three times with two kids at various ages between 7mths and 7yrs, the flight is certainly not a joyous event but its perfectly manageable, my husband is 6'2 and as long as you don't get a total knob in the seat in front its fine, its not going to kill you so you put on your big boy pants and get on with it. In saying that I wouldn't consider a budget airline like China Southern / Air Asia etc no point asking for misery!
Jamman
30 Mar 16 #10
Has anyone here flown economy to Australia? How did you find it? Seriously considering going this year but dreading the 22hr flight time there in cramped seats and no sleep. Weighing up if it's worth spending a bit more and going for economy premium instead.
intranix to Jamman
30 Mar 16 #15
Yes, and it was fine. Was with Cathay Pacific and Singapore. I'm 6ft 1.
BigYoSpeck to Jamman

Yep, twice. I'm 6' and it's manageable. You can get some sleep in and you'll want to get up and walk around a few times.

Best advice is take your shoes and socks off so make sure they don't smell for others sake.
mwb1 to Jamman
30 Mar 16 2 #19
I flew with Singapore airlines and would never go economy again, unless you can get the front row with a little more room. 14 hours direct to Singapore never again unless through premium economy

There are loads of services that offer free rentals in exchange for you transporting the vehicle to another city. Some even give a fuel allowance. Just google free car or camper rentals australia and take your pick.

Went to Melbourne from London a few years back using Royal Brunei. Although the 1st leg is stated as 16 hours in reality it's 7 hours to Dubai then you get off walk through the terminal ( about 1 hour stopover) back to the gate then get back onto the same plane (same seat) to Brunei where you change planes. However if the flight is late departing London you sit in your seat at Dubai as they clean round you and some people get off at Dubai. If this happens it's a VERY long and tiring flight.

We were a party of 6 and 1 of us had no TV for 16 hours so we kept rotating. Overall RB were ok but nothing special. If I ever went back though I would look for at least a 1 day stopover somewhere to try and break the flight up a bit or pay for an upgrade if you can afford it.
